Book Building and Probing Small for Mechanics

Download or read book Building and Probing Small for Mechanics written by Christian Joachim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents mechanics miniaturization trends explored step by step, starting with the example of the miniaturization of a mechanical calculator. The ultra-miniaturization of mechanical machinery is now approaching the atomic scale. In this book, molecule-gears, trains of molecule-gears, and molecule motors are studied -one molecule at a time- on a solid surface, using scanning probe manipulation protocols and in solution as demonstrated in the European project "MEMO". All scales of mechanical machinery are presented using the various lithography techniques currently available, from the submillimeter to the nanoscale. Researchers and nanomechanical engineers will find new inspirations for the construction of minute mechanical devices which can be used in diverse hostile environments, for example under radiation constraints, on the surface membrane of a living cell or immersed in liquid. The book is presented in a format accessible for university students, in particular for those at the Master and PhD levels.

Book Equilibria and Dynamics of Gas Adsorption on Heterogeneous Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Equilibria and Dynamics of Gas Adsorption on Heterogeneous Solid Surfaces written by W.A. Steele and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-12-17 with total page 909 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that the surfaces of real solids are geometrically distorted and chemically non-uniform has long been realized by the scientists investigating various phenomena occurring on solid surfaces. Even in the case when diffraction experiments show a well-organized bulk solid structure, the surface atoms or molecules will usually exhibit a much smaller degree of surface organization. In addition to the results obtained from electron diffraction, this can be seen in the impressive images obtained from STM and AFM microscopies. This geometric and chemical disorder is the source of the energetic heterogeneity for molecules adsorbing on real solid surfaces. Hundreds of papers have been published showing that this heterogeneity is a major factor in determining the behaviour of real adsorption systems.Studies of adsorption on energetically heterogeneous surfaces have proceeded along three somewhat separate paths, with only minor coupling of ideas. One was the study of adsorption equilibria on heterogeneous solid surfaces. The second path was the study of time evolution of adsorption processes such as surface diffusion or adsorption-desorption kinetics on heterogeneous surfaces, and the third was the study of adsorption in porous solids, or more generally, adsorption in systems with limited dimensions. The present monograph is a first attempt to provide a synthesis of the ways that surface geometric and energetic heterogeneities affect both the equilibria and the time evolution of adsorption on real solids. The book contains 17 chapters written by a team of internationally recognized specialists, some of whom have already published books on adsorption.

Book Quantum Aspects of Molecular Motions in Solids

Download or read book Quantum Aspects of Molecular Motions in Solids written by Anton Heidemann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institut Max von Laue-Paul Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble regularly orga nizes workshops that deal with various applications of neutrons in physics, chemistry, biology and materials science. The workshop "Quantum Aspects of Molecular Motions in Solids" was jointly organized by the Institut Laue Langevin and the Institut fiir Festkorperforschung at the Kernforschungsan lage Jiilich and took place in September 1986 in Grenoble. Tunneling phenomena in molecular crystals were first observed with macro scopic methods like specific heat experiments and later also with NMR. Fi nally, the development of high resolution neutron scattering techniques like neutron backscattering led to direct spectroscopic observation of the tunnel split ground state. This breakthrough was achieved in 1975 at Jiilich. Since then the large variety of high-resolution techniques available in combination with high neutron flux have turned ILL into the leading laboratory in the field of tunneling spectroscopy. Since 1980 regular meetings of scientists involved in this topic have been organized every two years (Jiilich, Braunschweig, Nottingham) and have led to an intense exchange of ideas and experimental results. The present workshop is the fourth of this series and the first with published proceedings presenting the state of the art in this field. The eight review articles introduce scientists not involved in the subject to the actual discussion. Sessions on translational tunneling of light interstitials in metals as well as on tunneling phenomena in amorphous substances provide bridges to adjacent fields.

Download or read book Spin Dynamics written by Malcolm H. Levitt and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spin Dynamics: Basics of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Second Edition is a comprehensive and modern introduction which focuses on those essential principles and concepts needed for a thorough understanding of the subject, rather than the practical aspects. The quantum theory of nuclear magnets is presented within a strong physical framework, supported by figures. The book assumes only a basic knowledge of complex numbers and matrices, and provides the reader with numerous worked examples and exercises to encourage understanding. With the explicit aim of carefully developing the subject from the beginning, the text starts with coverage of quarks and nucleons and progresses through to a detailed explanation of several important NMR experiments, including NMR imaging, COSY, NOESY and TROSY. Completely revised and updated, the Second Edition features new material on the properties and distributions of isotopes, chemical shift anisotropy and quadrupolar interactions, Pake patterns, spin echoes, slice selection in NMR imaging, and a complete new chapter on the NMR spectroscopy of quadrupolar nuclei. New appendices have been included on Euler angles, and coherence selection by field gradients. As in the first edition, all material is heavily supported by graphics, much of which is new to this edition. Written for undergraduates and postgraduate students taking a first course in NMR spectroscopy and for those needing an up-to-date account of the subject, this multi-disciplinary book will appeal to chemical, physical, material, life, medical, earth and environmental scientists. The detailed physical insights will also make the book of interest for experienced spectroscopists and NMR researchers. • An accessible and carefully written introduction, designed to help students to fully understand this complex and dynamic subject • Takes a multi-disciplinary approach, focusing on basic principles and concepts rather than the more practical aspects • Presents a strong pedagogical approach throughout, with emphasis placed on individual spins to aid understanding • Includes numerous worked examples, problems, further reading and additional notes Praise from the reviews of the First Edition: "This is an excellent book... that many teachers of NMR spectroscopy will cherish... It deserves to be a ‘classic’ among NMR spectroscopy texts." NMR IN BIOMEDICINE "I strongly recommend this book to everyone...it is probably the best modern comprehensive description of the subject."
