Download or read book 100 Bible Films written by Matthew Page and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From The Passion of the Christ to Life of Brian, and from The Ten Commandments to Last Temptation of Christ, filmmakers have been adapting the stories of the Bible for over 120 years, from first time the Höritz Passion Play was filmed in the Czech Republic back in 1897. Ever since, these stories have inspired musicals, comedies, sci-fi, surrealist visions and the avant garde not to mention spawning their own genre, the biblical epic. Filmmakers across six continents and from all kinds of religious perspectives (or none at all), have adapted the greatest stories ever told, delighting some and infuriating others. 100 Bible Films is the indispensible guide to this wide and varied output, providing an authoritative but accessible history of biblical adaptations through one hundred of the most interesting and significant biblical films. Richly illustrated with film stills, this book depicts how such films have undertaken a complex negotiation between art, commerce, entertainment and religion. Matthew Page traces the screen history of the biblical stories from the very earliest silent passion plays, via the golden ages of the biblical epic, through to more innovative and controversial later films as well as covering significant TV adaptations. He discusses films made not only by some of our greatest filmmakers, artists such as Martin Scorsese, Jean Luc Godard, Alice Guy, Roberto Rossellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Lotte Reiniger, Carl Dreyer and Luis Buñuel, but also those looking to explore their faith or share it with lovers of cinema the world over.

Book Adapting Spanish Classics for the New Millennium

Download or read book Adapting Spanish Classics for the New Millennium written by Linda M. Willem and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first-century's turn away from fidelity-based adaptations toward more innovative approaches has allowed adapters from Spain, Argentina, and the United States to draw upon Spain's rich body of nineteenth-century classics to address contemporary concerns about gender, sexuality, race, class, disability, celebrity, immigration, identity, social justice, and domestic violence. This book provides a snapshot of visual adaptations in the first two decades of the new millennium, examining how novelistic material from the past has been remediated for today's viewers through film, television, theater, opera, and the graphic novel. Its theoretical approach refines the binary view of adapters as either honoring or opposing their source texts by positing three types of adaptation strategies: salvaging (which preserves old stories by giving them renewed life for modern audiences), utilizing (which draws upon a pre-existing text for an alternative purpose, building upon the story and creating a shift in emphasis without devaluing the source material), and appropriation (which involves a critique of the source text, often with an attempt to dismantle its authority). Special attention is given to how adapters address audiences that are familiar with the source novels, and those that are not. This examination of the vibrant afterlife of classic literature will be of interest to scholars and educators in the fields of adaptation, media, Spanish literature, cultural studies, performance, and the graphic arts.

Book The Extramarital Affair

Download or read book The Extramarital Affair written by Herbert S. Strean and published by Jason Aronson. This book was released on 2000 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extramarital affair is, according to Dr. Herbert Stream, a form of neurotic behavior that reflects the person's unresolved chlidhood conflicts and present level of maturity. Using numerous case histories that provide excellent illustrations, he describes conflicted marriages and the expectations, dissapointments, and frustrations of those who use affairs as a means of escape. Issues such as mate choice, types of marriages, spouses' reactions, and unconsious compliance add depth and complexity to this important and often provocative subject.

Download or read book The Populist Persuasion written by Michael Kazin and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Populist Persuasion, the distinguished historian Michael Kazin guides readers through the expressions of conflict between powerful elites and "the people" that have run through our civic life, filling it with discord and meaning from the birth of the United States until the present day. Kazin argues persuasively that the power of populism lies in its adaptable nature. Across the political spectrum, commentators paste the label on forces and individuals who really have just one big thing in common: they are effective at blasting "elites" or "the establishment" for harming the interests and betraying the ideals of "the people" in nations that are committed, at least officially, to democratic principles. Kazin’s classic book has influenced debates over populism since its publication. The new preface to this edition brings the story up to date by charting the present resurgence of populist discourse, which was front and center in the 2016 elections and in the Brexit debate.
