Book Clear the Track

Download or read book Clear the Track written by Phillip J. Reyburn and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the air filled with the missiles of death, the bluecoats sought the shelter of mother earth and lay flat hugging the wet ground. The men were caught in an exposed position, and here occurred an incident, that would haunt William R. Hartpence of the Fifty-first Indiana as long as he lived. He observed First Lieutenant Peter G. Tait of the Eighty-ninth Illinois standing a little in advance of his regiment, which had intermingled with the Fifty-first during the assault. With his eyes fixed on the young officer, Hartpence watched as Tait was stuck by a cannon ball near the center of his body, tearing a great hole in the left side. As he fell, he threw his right arm around to his side, when his heart and left lung dropped out into it. The heart continued to throb for twenty minutes, its pulsations being distinctly seen by his agonized comrades, who stood there and saw the noble life fade out in heroic self-sacrifice. Battle of Nashville, December 16, 1864. In answer to Lincolns call for more men to put down the rebellion, the several trunk railroads centered in Chicago oversaw the organization of a regiment composed principally of railroad employees. Numbered the Eighty-ninth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, it was better known by the sobriquet, the Railroad Regiment. Considered one of the 300 hundred fighting regiments of the Union army, the Railroaders had 133 men killed in action or later died from wounds. Another 66 succumbed in rebel prisons. At the final muster, Colonel Charles T. Hotchkiss said it best: Our history is written on the head-boards of rudely-made graves. . . . Such a record we feel proud of. And indeed, it was. PHILIP J. REYBURN is a retired field representative for the Social Security Administration. With Terry L. Wilson, he edited Jottings from Dixie: The Civil War Dispatches of Sergeant Major Stephen F. Fleharty, U.S.A.

Book excerpt: Known to the world as Goldie, Vijay Anand, the visionary Hindi film director and screenwriter, whose oeuvre includes such respected and successful films as Kala Bazaar, Tere Ghar Ke Saamne, Guide, Teesri Manzil, Jewel Thief, Johny Mera Naam, Tere Mere Sapne, Blackmail and Kora Kagaz, amongst many more, has remained largely uncelebrated. Goldie was one of the few ‘complete’ filmmakers in the Hindi film industry, who had the ability to look beyond stereotypes and help actors re-invent themselves. A rare non-filmy personality in the midst of the otherwise quite filmy industry folks, he always saw himself as a student and an explorer, and is credited with bringing newness and slickness to Hindi cinema. In his prolific career, Goldie directed 17 movies, acted in 19 and wrote over a dozen, many under the family banner—Navketan Films, established in 1949 by his two older brothers, the iconic star-actor Dev Anand, and director Chetan Anand. In Goldie: The Man and His Movies, which is the only published biography of this astoundingly talented filmmaker, Anitaa Padhye, film journalist and author, chronicles the life and times of this maverick artist, as narrated to her by the man himself over many meetings, prior to his sudden demise on 23 February 2004.

Book The Great Uprising in India 1857 58

Download or read book The Great Uprising in India 1857 58 written by Rosie Llewellyn-Jones and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2007 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A volume in the Worlds of the East India Company series, edited by Huw Bowen The events of 1857-58 in India are seen here through a series of untold stories which show that they were much more complex than hitherto thought. Drawing on sources in Britain and India, including contemporary East India Company records, together with oral memories from India illustrated with a number of nineteenth century photographs, the author tells of the murder of the British Resident in the princely state of Kotah; of Indians who opposed the Mutiny, and suffered at the hands of the "mutineers"; of a small, but significant, number of Europeans who fought with the Indians against the British; and of the infamous "prize agents" of the East India Company - licensed looters whose rapacity seemed limitless. The book conveys vividly what it was like for different kinds of participants to live through these traumatic events, bringing to life their anxiety and desperation, the grisly bloodshed, and the vast devastation - illustrating overall, as one Indian soldier who served in the East India Company's army put it, "the wind of madness". Dr ROSIE LLEWELLYN-JONES is author and editor of numerous books on India, including The Nawabs, the British and the City of Lucknow (1985) and Portraits of the Indian Princes (forthcoming).
