Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into the complex and often politicized world of asylum claims and asylum rights of children seeking sanctuary in the United States. This eye-opening book asks two vital questions: do immigration judges base their asylum decisions on more than just the law, and how have federal courts responded to executive policies and programs that significantly affect the rights of these minors? With over 12,000 immigration court decisions and 200 federal court cases as its backbone, this book uncovers how both legal and political factors shape the fate of children seeking asylum. The findings reveal that while political factors do influence the decision-making process, courts still strive to protect the legal rights of unaccompanied minors, pushing back against some of the more harmful and legally dubious immigration policies pursued by various Presidential administration This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the intricacies of asylum claims and asylum rights of unaccompanied minors in the United States.

Download or read book Glorious Temples or Babylonic Whores written by Anne-Françoise Morel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Glorious Temples or Babylonic Whores, Anne-Françoise Morel offers an account of the intellectual and cultural history of places of worship in Stuart England. Official documents issued by the Church of England rarely addressed issues regarding the status, function, use, and design of churches; but consecration sermons turn time and again to the conditions and qualities befitting a place of worship in Post-Reformation England. Placing the church building directly in the midst of the heated discussions on the polity and ceremonies of the Church of England, this book recovers a vital lost area of architectural discourse. It demonstrates that the religious principles of church building were enhanced by, and contributed to, scientific developments in fields outside the realm of religion, such as epistemology, the theory of sense perception, aesthetics, rhetoric, antiquarianism, and architecture.

Download or read book Medicine Charity and Mutual Aid written by Peter Shapely and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the voluntary sector in British towns and cities has received increasing scholarly attention in recent years. Nevertheless, whilst there have been a number of valuable contributions looking at issues such as charity as a key welfare provider, charity and medicine, and charity and power in the community, there has been no book length exploration of the role and position of the recipient. By focusing on the recipients of charity, rather than the donors or institutions, this volume tackles searching questions of social control and cohesion, and the relationship between providers and recipients in a new and revealing manner. It is shown how these issues changed over the course of the nineteenth century, as the frontier between the state and the voluntary sector shifted away from charity towards greater reliance on public finance, workers' contributions, and mutual aid. In turn, these new sources of assistance enriched civil society, encouraging democratization, empowerment and social inclusion for previously marginalized members of the community. The book opens with an introduction that locates medicine, charity and mutual aid within their broad historiographical and urban contexts. Twelve archive-based, inter-related chapters follow. Their main chronological focus is the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which witnessed such momentous changes in the attitudes to, and allocation of, charity and poor relief. However, individual chapters on the early modern period, the eighteenth century and the aftermath of the Second World War provide illuminating context and help ensure that the volume provides a systematic overview of the subject that will be of interest to social, urban, and medical historians.
