  • Author : Judith M. Taylor
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press
  • Release : 2014-12-01

Download or read book Visions of Loveliness written by Judith M. Taylor and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gardeners of today take for granted the many varieties of geraniums, narcissi, marigolds, roses, and other beloved flowers for their gardens. Few give any thought at all to how this incredible abundance came to be or to the people who spent a good part of their lives creating it. These breeders once had prosperous businesses and were important figures in their communities but are only memories now. They also could be cranky and quirky. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, new and exotic species were arriving in Europe and the United States from all over the world, and these plants often captured the imaginations of the unlikeliest of men, from aristocratic collectors to gruff gardeners who hardly thought of themselves as artists. But whatever their backgrounds, they all shared a quality of mind that led them to ask “What if?” and to use their imagination and skills to answer that question themselves. The newest rose from China was small and light pink, but what if it were larger and came in more colors? Lilac was very nice in its way, but what if its blossoms were double and frilly? While there are many books about plant collectors and explorers, there are none about plant breeders. Drawing from libraries, archives, and the recollections of family members, horticultural historian Judith M. Taylor traces the lives of prominent cultivators in the context of the scientific discoveries and changing tastes of their times. Visions of Loveliness is international in scope, profiling plant breeders from many countries—for example, China and the former East Germany—whose work may be unknown to the Anglophone reader. In addition to chronicling the lives of breeders, the author also includes chapters on the history behind the plants by genus, from shrubs and flowering trees to herbaceous plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age is only a number, known humorously, but handicaps at an advanced age are painful. Luckily, after successful operations on my hip joints, I was able to detect the joys of walking again. Have I walked during my student years with a friend across Vienna, we enjoyed the summer days at the 'Alte Donau'-baths. Later, when I met my girlfriend, we enjoyed walking in the Viennese Woods near the suburb of Sievering. Back to Vienna from South Africa, where I've spent most of my adult working life, I had followed the advice from a local physician to take up Nordic Walking as a sport and therapy once I had healed from my two operations. A new life awaited me: Experiencing the extent of the Viennese Woods, fields, and a heath, besides the extent of a world city from many different vistas. I also listened to my inner voice causing many flashes of remembrances during my extensive walks.

Book Ottoman Empire and European Theatre Vol II

Download or read book Ottoman Empire and European Theatre Vol II written by Michael Hüttler and published by Hollitzer Wissenschaftsverlag. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Time of Joseph Haydn: From Sultan Mahmud I to Sultan Mahmud II (r.1730-1839), the second volume of Ottoman Empire and European Theatre, explores the relationship between Western playwrights, composers and visual artists of the eighteenth-century and Turkish-Ottoman culture, as well as the interest of Ottoman artists in European culture. Twenty-seven contributions by renowned experts shed light on the mutual influences that affected society and art for both Europeans and Ottomans. Successor to the first volume of the series, The Age of Mozart and Sultan Selim III (1756-1808), this book examines the compositions of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and his contemporaries along with events in the Ottoman political era during the time span from Sultan Mahmud I (b.1696, r.1730-1754) to Sultan Mahmud II (b.1785, r.1808-1839). Taking Haydn's Türkenopern ('Turkish operas') Lo speziale (1768) and L'incontro improvviso (1775) as the departure point, the articles collected in this publication reflect the growth of research in the area of cultural transfers between the Ottoman Empire and non-Ottoman Europe, as expressed in theatre, music and the visual arts. Contributions by: Emre Aracı, Annemarie Bönsch, Reinhard Buchberger, Bertrand Michael Buchmann, Necla Çıkıgil, Caryl Clark, Matthew Head, Caroline Herfert, Bent Holm, Michael Hüttler, Hans-Peter Kellner, Adam Mestyan, Isabelle Moindrot, Walter Puchner, Günsel Renda, Geoffrey Roper, Orlin Sabev, Çetın Sarıkartal, Käthe Springer-Dissmann, Suna Suner, Frances Trollope, Hans Ernst Weidinger, Daniel Winkler, Larry Wolff, Mehmet Alaaddin Yalçınkaya, Netice Yıldız, Clemens Zoidl.
