Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1910 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII LETTERS TO FRIENDS The character of the correspondence of a good letter-writer changes radically in tone and nature with the character of the person or circle to whom the epistles are addressed. This is especially true when the writer is of a sensitive, artistic temperament. Striking instances of this fact are found in the letters of Rosa Bonheur, and some good examples of it are given in the present chapter. The reader has already seen how Rosa Bonheur wrote and thought when dashing off letters to her brothers and sister. The family tie, always so strong in France, was especially so in this case, where all were bound together by a common love of art and where all were working to win ease and fame in the same calling. Love and affection are naturally the predominant note. "She always spoke of the various members of her family in the tendercst terms," writes M. Paul Chardin. I would now invite attention to Rosa Bonheur's letters to her friends which are purposely presented in groups, -either in order to bring out more clearly different sides of the artist's complex nature, or because it is chiefly one episode that runs through them. I begin with the long series addressed to the different members of the talented Mene-Cain families. This remarkable group of artists consisted of Pierre Jules Mene (1810--79), a most prolific animal sculptor; his son-in-law, Auguste Cain (1822-94), a pupil of Rude, also a distinguished animal sculptor, several of whose best works adorn the parks of Paris; and the two sons of the latter--Georges Cain, painter, writer on art and archaeology, and conservator of the Carnavalet Museum; and Henri Cain, painter and dramatist, whose wife, Julia Guiraudon, was a well-known singer of the Opera Comique. Henri...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women Painters of the World: From the Time of Caterina Vigri, 1413-1463, to Rosa Bonheur and the Present Day As examples in art of complete womanliness, mention may be made of two exquisite portraits by Ma dame Le Brun, in which, whilst representing her little daughter and herself, the painter discloses the inner essence and the life of maternal love, and discloses them with a caressing playfulness of passion unattainable by men, and sometimes unappreciated by men. Here, indeed, we have the poetry of universal motherhood, common to the household hearts of good women the wide world over. Such pictures may not be the highest form of painting, but highest they are in their own realm of human emotion; and they recall to one's memory that truth in which Napoleon the Great ranked the gentler sex as the most potent of all creative artists. The future destiny of children, said he, is always the work of mothers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rosa Bonheur From her earliest infancy Rosa Bonheur showed signs of the talent that has placed her very high as a painter of animals. Before she could walk she would amuse herself for hours with a pencil and a piece of paper, and writing of her childhood she herself said, "I refused formally to learn to read, but before I was four years old I already had a passion for drawing, and I covered the white walls as high as I could reach with my shapeless sketches. What amused me also was to cut out subjects; they were always the same. To begin with I made long ribbons, then with my scissors I used to cut out, first a shepherd, then a dog, then a calf, then a sheep, and then a tree, invariably in the same order. I spent many days over this pastime." She was born on March 16th, 1822, at Bordeaux, her father being a drawing-master, named Raymond Bonheur, and a pupil of Lacour. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: ROSA BONHEUR THE LITTLE GIRL THAT WANTED TO BE A BOY Father and mother Bonheur had wanted a son, and had even planned to name him Raymond after his father. Instead a little daughter had come to them who couldn't be named Raymond, and who couldn't grow up to be a painter like her father because in those days in France, almost a hundred years ago, girls were taught to sew and to cook, not to draw pictures. That was for a boy to learn. It was a great pity, to be sure! The little girl who should have been a boy was named Rosa because that began with an R like Raymond. When she was such a tiny girl that her head did not reach the door-knob, Rosa began toshow that she was not like other children of her age. She would leave her dolls in a corner of the room and would make queer round marks and square marks on the white paint of the door panels with her father's black crayon pencils. Papa, papa, she would cry proudly, Lalie make pictures. But Rosa's father laughed at the wobbly tigers and lions and told her not to bother him while he was painting. The poor man had to work very hard, for pictures did not sell as well as potatoes in the village where the Bonheurs lived, and besides Rosa there were soon two boys who must have bread and butter and new shoes. By and by they grew so poor that they decided to move to Paris, where the father hoped to find more work. Rosa was three years old when they went to the big noisy city of Paris. She was not pretty, for she was very short and thin, with a queer pug nose and a square brown face. But she had a long tight braid of lovely yellowhair that hung almost to the hem of her skirt and was tied at the end with a shoe string. She wore wooden shoes like all the little boys and girls in Paris and a checked brown dress without any trimm...
