The impact of these stimuli on the decision-making proce·ss is broadly termed sensory evaluation. Advances in sensory evaluation research have been slow in the past because of the human factor-the necessity to use highly trained sensory panels to conduct this research. High technology in strumentation and new understandings of sensory evaluations are now combining to make possible quantum jumps forward in sensory eval uation research. It is widely recognized that the sensory aspects of fruits and vegeta bles are affected by many factors, among them environment, variety, cultural practices, and handling practices. However, if one attempts to find a general reference or compilation of findings regarding this sub ject area there seems to be few, if any, available. A survey of the literature does suggest that in the past few years research into specific factors which influence the sensory aspects of fruits and vegetables has increased significantly. This increased interest in sensory research and the renewed national awareness of the value of research into pre and postharvest quality of fruits and vegetables prompted the Flavor Subdivision, Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division, American Chemical Society to sponsor a symposium entitled "Sensory Evalua tion of Fruits and Vegetables: Effect of Environment, Cultural Prac tices and Variety" during the 1982 meeting in Kansas City, Missouri.

Book excerpt: This book covers about 20 grape species that are vitally important in breeding programs and provide information on approximately 150 of the most familiar grape rootstocks in the world. Today, grape rootstocks play a fundamental role in resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses and adaptation of grapevine to different environmental conditions, a factor that has opened commercial grape growing up to regions that might otherwise be overlooked. Grape rootstocks can be used for adaptation to a variety of soil conditions, including soil texture, depth, nutrient availability, pH, salinity, lime content, water availability (drought), and water drainage. Rootstocks can also be used to shift scion cultivar; the timing of various key phenological events and indirectly affects vineyard design. There are around 1500 grape rootstocks developed in the world, of which around 50 are commonly used as commercial rootstock. North American species account for around 30 species, and two-third of them have already been used for rootstock breeding at one time or another. However, the most commonly available rootstocks are derived from just three American species (V. berlandieri, V. rupestris, and V. riparia). Therefore, the most common grape rootstocks have a narrow genetic base, and efforts to extend the gene pools for breeding programs by using the other species are of ongoing importance to the industry and scientific community.

Book excerpt: The establishment of the US public research system plays an important role in accelerating the development of the US agricultural economy. However, according to the technology treadmill theory, progress induced by advanced technologies have placed pressure on farmers to exit the industry. These farmers are potential clients and major political voices for public research sector. Lacking political support, the public research sector faces the severe challenge of covering its budgets. The introduction of the Bayh-Dole Act, by permitting public entities to charge for developed technology, offers them the opportunity to generate income from the private sector. Meanwhile, this lack of funding is unable to impede the pace of the public research sector to develop innovative biological technologies. This is due to the gap which has been caused by the private sector in its focus on inventing technology which caters to market demand. Moreover, the increasingly severe environmental challenges motivate a need for adaptive technologies. The Geneva apple rootstock that is the focus of this thesis, is one of the innovative biological technologies invented by the public research system. It is challenged by a lack of public funding as it aims to address various plant diseases exacerbated by dramatic global climate change. The goal of this thesis is to complete an ex-ante economic evaluation of adopting Geneva apple rootstocks. In order to do this, we review the literature evaluating the technology adoption process and methodologies in conducting ex-ante analysis and introduce expected utility theory to quantify the adoption decision results. Our results show yield and location play important roles in determining accumulated net present value. Geneva apple rootstocks improve the accumulated net present values by increasing yields. As for risk analysis, constant relative risk aversion function is appropriate to utilize in the long-term commitment perennial fruit industry. The Geneva rootstock generates a higher certainty equivalent than current rootstock infected by the plant disease, fire blight. Its estimated investment value ranges from $7.35 to $42.52 per tree as the probability of fire blight increases.
