Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of preaching is a combination of diligent effort and inspiration with diligence being perhaps the primary force. The unusual quality of the sermons in this collection is the imaginative use of the biblical sources, the poetic style in which the message is phrased, and the skillful application of the theme to the current needs of people. This volume represents the concerns of Dr. Swanson that the biblical message be heard in words that will capture the attention of the hearer and leave a lasting impression. The reader will not soon forget the imagery of the stone, or a face towards Jerusalem, or girded loins and burning lamps. He will relive the experience of Jesus in Gethsemane, the thirst of the woman at the well, and the tragedy of blind Bartimaeus. The end of preaching is to capture the hearer, or the reader, so that the biblical story is not something that happened centuries ago but an event that comes alive in our experience today. Dr. Swanson has fulfilled this purpose admirably. In the words of Dr. John H. Bunn, the author has retrieved "the dramatic method of prophetic poetic preaching." This anthology is sent forth with the prayer that it will be an inspiration to those who preach and to those who hear.

Book excerpt: Often in the deepest struggles of life, we find ourselves in a place that feels dark. For many of us it feel like our spiritual roots are in dry ground. We can't understand what God is doing and wonder if He even cares. There's a troubling feeling of distance that we just can't ignore. We long to be sure that we know what God wants from this spirit He has placed inside of us. Roots in Dry Ground is a cry to your heart, God loves us, God provides for us and God wants all of us to spend eternity in heaven with Him! This love is really solid and provides a great navigation pointer for us in this dark world. I can relate to the place you are in; I too struggled with this dilemma, but this dilemma is shear torment that I find is beyond my means of understanding; my understanding as an adult, no longer a child. If we have a heart to learn and a willingness to follow the example of children, their divine attributes can hold a key to unlocking our own spiritual growth. Our Father in Heaven, in His great wisdom and love, sends His spirit in sons and daughters to this earth as children. They come to families as precious gifts with a divine nature and destiny. Our Heavenly Father knows children are a key to helping us become like Him. There is so much we can learn from the spirit of children! As you go forth, be aware that when you have accepted the Lord as your personal savior, you are saved in Jesus Name and you are ready to till any dry ground that may have created doubt. Your spiritual roots are free, no longer in dry ground. I will "grow secure in Jesus" from this point. So, ask yourself, As a child was I truly taught to be a child of God? CONTINUE ON TO BE SURE! In the book of Genesis, Chapter 2 verse 7, the time came when the Lord God formed a man's body out of the dust of the ground and breathed into it the breath of life. And man became a "living soul" a person. Your soul is your mind, will and your emotions. That same breath is breathed into a baby when it is born and into each of us when we are born. This breath is the Spirit of God. This spirit lives in this body, this flesh and the purpose of this body is to carry the spirit of the Lord wherever it need and wants to go. God gives us free will to choose to do His will or to do our own. There are three things that God has purposed for this body that He has placed His spirit. Number one, to love, worship and praise Him. You do know He made you and you belong to Him. Number two, to love and care for each other and three to tell someone about the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Have you ever experience the Spirit of God that lives on the inside of you? For just a moment experience the Spirit of God, this breath of God, take your hand, hold it close to your mouth and blow softly up and down on the palm of your hand. This is the Spirit of God that lives on the inside of you. Who can do this but God?? You make this breath of life, this spirit "Holy" when you believe and accept the Lord Jesus Christ into your life. And when the body has done all that God has required of it, the body returns from which it came "the dust of the ground and the Spirit goes back from which it came, to God.

I Choose Brave reveals a countercultural plan to help you where you are--knee-deep in fears of parenting, the future, your marriage, and a world that feels unstable. Book Supposing Him to Be the Gardener

Download or read book Supposing Him to Be the Gardener written by Charles H. Spurgeon and published by Curiosmith. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sermon grew out of John 20:15: “Supposing him to be the gardener.” Spurgeon used an extensive well-tended garden as a setting for this discourse, probably Dr. Bennet’s large garden in Mentone, which Spurgeon frequently visited. When Jesus Christ is the gardener of creation it leads to many inferences: it spurs people to their duties, it relieves people from responsibilities they should never assume, it delivers people from fears, it is a warning for the careless, it is a calming influence to those who complain and lastly it is an outlook full of hope. Spurgeon said he is “hoping that I may open many roads of meditation for your hearts . . . to indicate in which direction you may look for a vein of precious ore.” This sermon has been updated to modern language.

Book Celebration of Discipline

Download or read book Celebration of Discipline written by Richard J. Foster and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 1988-10-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty years since its publication, Celebration of Discipline has helped over a million seekers discover a richer spiritual life infused with joy, peace, and a deeper understanding of God. For this special twentieth anniversary edition, Richard J. Foster has added an introduction, in which he shares the story of how this beloved and enduring spiritual guidebook came to be. Hailed by many as the best modern book on Christian spirituality, Celebration of Discipline explores the "classic Disciplines," or central spiritual practices, of the Christian faith. Along the way, Foster shows that it is only by and through these practices that the true path to spiritual growth can be found. Dividing the Disciplines into three movements of the Spirit, Foster shows how each of these areas contribute to a balanced spiritual life. The inward Disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting, and study, offer avenues of personal examination and change. The outward Disciplines of simplicity, solitude, submission, and service, help prepare us to make the world a better place. The corporate Disciplines of confession, worship, guidance, and celebration, bring us nearer to one another and to God. Foster provides a wealth of examples demonstrating how these Disciplines can become part of our daily activities-and how they can help us shed our superficial habits and "bring the abundance of God into our lives." He offers crucial new insights on simplicity, demonstrating how the biblical view of simplicity, properly understood and applied, brings joy and balance to our inward and outward lives and "sets us free to enjoy the provision of God as a gift that can be shared with others." The discussion of celebration, often the most neglected of the Disciplines, shows its critical importance, for it stands at the heart of the way to Christ. Celebration of Discipline will help motivate Christians everywhere to embark on a journey of prayer and spiritual growth.

Download or read book Understanding Roots written by Robert Kourik and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Roots uncovers one of the greatest mysteries underground—the secret lives and magical workings of the roots that move and grow invisibly beneath our feet. Roots, it seems, do more than just keep a plant from falling over: they gather water and nutrients, exude wondrous elixirs to create good soil, make friends with microbes and fungi, communicate with other roots, and adapt themselves to all manner of soils, winds, and climates, nourishing and sustaining our gardens, lawns, and woodlands. Understanding Roots contains over 115 enchanting and revealing root drawings that most people have never seen, from prairies, grasslands, and deserts, as well as drawings based on excavations of vegetable, fruit, nut, and ornamental tree roots. Every root system presented in this book was drawn by people literally working in the trenches, sketching the roots where they grew. The text provides a verydetailed review of all aspects of transplanting; describes how roots work their magic to improve soil nutrients; investigates the hidden life of soil microbes and their mysterious relationship to roots; explores the question of whether deep roots really gather more unique nutrients than shallow roots; shares the latest research about the mysteries of mycorrhizal (good fungal) association; shows you exactly where to put your fertilizer, compost, water, and mulch to help plants flourish; tells you why gray water increases crop yields more than fresh water; and, most importantly, reveals the science behind all the above (with citations for each scientific paper). This book contains at least eighty percent more new information, more results of the latest in-depth and up-to-date explorations, and even more helpful guidelines on roots than the author’s previous book (Roots Demystified: Change Your Garden Habits to Help Roots Thrive). This is not a revised edition—it’s a whole new stand-alone book.

Book excerpt: "Reatha and her twin sister Leatha, were heralded and recognized for the work that they had accomplished in evangelizing, both near and far. They were trailblazers-going into areas where no Church of God in Christ had ever existed, sleeping in the same tent where they ministered, and preaching under brush arbors and on street corners, in the cities and in the country. They preached in the sunshine, rain and snow. The fearlessly went into these areas and established numerous churches throughout the nation. They embodied the true essence of the Great Commission of Jesus Christ which says in Matthew 28:19, 'Go ye and teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.' This powerful duo was instrumental in establishing over 75 churches, nursing them in their infancy until a pastor could be appointed. Leatha passed away in the 70's, but Reatha worked relentlessly for the kingdom until she passed away in 2005 at 104 years old."--Bishop Charles Edward Blake Sr.
