Book Fracture Toughness and Fatigue Properties of 5083 0 Plate and 5183 Welds for Liquefied Natural Gas Applications

Download or read book Fracture Toughness and Fatigue Properties of 5083 0 Plate and 5183 Welds for Liquefied Natural Gas Applications written by JG. Kaufman and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a number of investigations on the properties of 5083-0 plate and weldments of various thicknesses have been summarized. The data show that the tensile properties and toughness of 5083-0 plate at room and subzero temperatures remain about constant or decrease modestly with an increase in thickness from 1 to 9 in. and that the properties of 5083-0 plate formed into a spherical contour by the Alcoa 570 process are essentially the same as those of asrolled 5083-0 plate. Both strength and toughness are higher at -260 and -320°F than at room temperature. The strength and toughness of 5183 welds at room temperature, -260, and -320°F are equivalent to those of the parent plate. The high toughness of these products at those temperatures has been demonstrated by tests of relatively large-scale specimens, all of which have fractured by ductile tearing; conservative engineering estimates of KIc and Kc have been made based upon these results and those published in the literature. The fatigue crack propagation characteristics of these materials have been established and found to be largely unaffected by temperature, thickness, orientation, or location in the weld. Crack growth rates are faster in moist air than in dry air.

Book Effect of Loading Rate and Thermal Aging on the Fracture Toughness of Stainless Steel Alloys

Download or read book Effect of Loading Rate and Thermal Aging on the Fracture Toughness of Stainless Steel Alloys written by WJ. Mills and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of loading rate on the fracture toughness of Types 304 and 316 stainless-steel plate and Type 308 weld before and after thermal aging was characterized using both fracture mechanics and Charpy specimens. Aging at 566°C for 10 000 h reduced static Jc initiation toughness values for both wrought and weld metals by 10 to 20%, and tearing moduli were reduced by 20 to 30%. Under semi-dynamic and dynamic loading conditions, the fracture resistance was not decreased below the static response for either unaged or aged materials. The present results also demonstrated that the large degradation in Charpy V-notch impact energy after aging was not representative of the impact resistance for stainless-steel components containing cracks or crack-life defects. Fractographic examinations revealed that the large loss in Charpy energy was associated with aging-induced microstructural changes that substantially decreased the energy required to initiate a crack from a blunt notch. At very slow strain rates, creep crack growth was found to cause a significant degradation in fracture toughness.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of a High Strength Steel

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of a High Strength Steel written by Maurice F. Amateau and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth behavior of high-strength Ladish D6AC steel was examined under various conditions of frequency, environment, temperature, stress ratio, and stress intensity history. Materials with fracture toughness ranging from 50 to 100 ksi/sq. in., but with the same yield strength of 220 ksi, were examined. Variations in fracture thoughness do not have a strong effect on crack growth rate at stress intensity levels within the log-linear portion of the crack growth curves. Different environments, such as dry air, laboratory air, and distilled water, were found to produce different fatigue crack growth behavior at 1 Hz but not at 10 Hz loading frequency. The lowest crack growth rate occurred in dry air, while the aggressive environment of distilled water affected the crack growth rate more severly at lower stress intensity levels. The effects of temperature over the range from -40 to 175F are a uniform shift of the growth curve to low crack growth rates and a lowering of the stress intensity level for the onset of rapid fatigue crack propagation. Suppression of crack growth rate following high prior stress cycles is the most significant effect of stress history. This effect cannot be explained in terms of the relative plastic zone sizes alone. (Author).
