Book Gradient Limitations in Room Temperature and Superconducting Acceleration Structures

Download or read book Gradient Limitations in Room Temperature and Superconducting Acceleration Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accelerating gradient is a key parameter of the accelerating structure in large linac facilities, like future Linear Collider. In room temperature accelerating structures the gradient is limited mostly by breakdown phenomena, caused by high surface electric fields or pulse surface heating. High power processing is a necessary procedure to clean surface and improve the gradient. In the best tested X-band structures the achieved gradient is exceed 100 MV/m in of (almost equal to)200 ns pulses for breakdown rate of (almost equal to) 10−7. Gradient limit depends on number of factors and no one theory which can explain all sets of experimental results and predict gradient in new accelerating structure. In paper we briefly overview the recent experimental results of breakdown studies, progress in understanding of gradient limitations and scaling laws. Although superconducting rf technology has been adopted throughout the world for ILC, it has frequently been difficult to reach the predicted performance in these structures due to a number of factors: multipactoring, field emission, Q-slope, thermal breakdown. In paper we are discussing all these phenomena and the ways to increase accelerating gradient in SC cavity, which are a part of worldwide R & D program.

Book Recent Progress in R D of Advanced Room Temperature Accelerator Structures

Download or read book Recent Progress in R D of Advanced Room Temperature Accelerator Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NLC and JLC groups face two major challenges in designing X-Band accelerator structures for an electron-positron linear collider. The first is to demonstrate stable, long-term operation at a 70 MV/m gradient, which is required to keep the machine cost low, and the second is to strongly suppress the structure long-range wakefield, which is required to achieve high luminosity. During the past 2 years, the major emphasis has been on proving high gradient operation, although dipole wakefield suppression studies are continuing. This paper describes high gradient test results from a series of prototype TW and SW structures being developed for the NLC/JLC. Schemes for damping and detuning the dipole modes of these structures are also presented.

Book International X Band Linear Collider Accelerator Structure R D

Download or read book International X Band Linear Collider Accelerator Structure R D written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than fifteen years before the International Technology Recommendation Panel (ITRP) decision in August, 2004, there were intensive R & D activities and broad international collaboration among the groups at SLAC, KEK, FNAL, LLNL and other labs for the room temperature X-Band accelerator structures. The goal was to provide an optimized design of the main linac structure for the NLC (Next Linear Collider) or GLC (Global Linear Collider). There have been two major challenges in developing X-band accelerator structures for the linear colliders. The first is to demonstrate stable, long-term operation at the high gradient (65 MV/m) that is required to optimize the machine cost. The second is to strongly suppress the beam induced long-range wakefields, which is required to achieve high luminosity. More than thirty X-band accelerator structures with various RF parameters, cavity shapes and coupler types have been fabricated and tested since 1989. A summary of the main achievements and experiences are presented in this talk including the structure design, manufacturing techniques, high power performance, and other structure related issues. Also, the new progress in collaborating with the CLIC, high gradient structures and X-Band structure applications for RF deflectors and others are briefly introduced.

Book Physics And Experiments With Linear Colliders Lcws95 Proceedings Of The Workshop In 2 Volumes

Download or read book Physics And Experiments With Linear Colliders Lcws95 Proceedings Of The Workshop In 2 Volumes written by Yoshiaki Fujii and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-08-22 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collider experiments have become essential to studying elementary particles. In particular, lepton collisions such as e⁺e⁻ are ideal from both experimental and theoretical points of view, and are a unique means of probing the new energy region, sub-TeV to TeV. It is a common understanding that a next-generation e⁺e⁻ collider will have to be a linear machine that evades beam-energy losses due to synchrotron radiation. In this book, physics feasibilities at linear colliders are discussed in detail, taking into account the recent progress in high-energy physics.

Book Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology Volume 5 Applications Of Superconducting Technology To Accelerators

Download or read book Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology Volume 5 Applications Of Superconducting Technology To Accelerators written by Alexander Wu Chao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several decades major advances in accelerators have resulted from breakthroughs in accelerator science and accelerator technology. After the introduction of a new accelerator physics concept or the implementation of a new technology, a leap in accelerator performance followed. A well-known representation of these advances is the Livingston chart, which shows an exponential growth of accelerator performance over the last seven or eight decades. One of the breakthrough accelerator technologies that support this exponential growth is superconducting technology. Recognizing this major technological advance, we dedicate Volume 5 of Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology (RAST) to superconducting technology and its applications. Two major applications are superconducting magnets (SC magnets) and superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. SC magnets provide much higher magnetic field than their room-temperature counterparts, thus allowing accelerators to reach higher energies with comparable size as well as much reduced power consumption. SRF technology allows field energy storage for continuous wave applications and energy recovery, in addition to the advantage of tremendous power savings and better particle beam quality. In this volume, we describe both technologies and their applications. We also include discussion of the associated R&D in superconducting materials and the future prospects for these technologies.

Book Comparative Study of Medium Damped and Detuned Linear Accelerator Structures

Download or read book Comparative Study of Medium Damped and Detuned Linear Accelerator Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long range wakefields are a serious concern for a future linear collider based on room temperature accelerating structures. They can be suppressed either by detuning and or local damping or with some combination of both strategies. Detuning relies on precisely phasing the contributions of the dipole modes excited by the passage of a single bunch. This is accomplished by controlling individual mode frequencies, a process which dictates individual cell dimensional tolerances. Each mode must be excited with the correct strength; this in turn, determines cell-to-cell alignment tolerances. In contrast, in a locally damped structure, the modes are attenuated at the cell level. Clearly, mode frequencies and relative excitation become less critical in that context; mechanical fabrication tolerances can be relaxed. While local damping is ideal from the stand-point of long range wakefield suppression, this comes at the cost of reducing the shunt impedance and possibly unacceptable localized heating. Recently, the Medium Damped Structure (MDS), a compromise between detuning and local damping, has generated some interest. In this paper, we compare a hypothetical MDS to the NLC Rounded Damped Detuned Structure (RDDS) and investigate possible advantages from the standpoint fabrication tolerances and their relation to beam stability and emittance preservation.

Book Field Emission and Rf Breakdown in High gradient Room Temperature Linac Structures

Download or read book Field Emission and Rf Breakdown in High gradient Room Temperature Linac Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this article is to serve as a tutorial review on the subject of field emission and rf breakdown in high-gradient room-temperature accelerator structures and associated devices. The need to understand and control these two phenomena has become increasingly important because of the prospect of using high-gradient structures in future linear colliders. Electron field emission creates so-called dark current which parasitically absorbs rf energy, causes radiation, backgrounds, and possibly wakefields; it seems to be the precursor of rf breakdown, possibly in combination with local outgassing and plasma formation. In turn, rf breakdown limits the operation of accelerators and can cause irreversible damage to their physical structures. Research on these topics is interesting and challenging because it involves a mixture of disciplines such as surface physics, metallurgy, fabrication technologies, microwaves, beam dynamics and plasmas. This review consists of four parts: (1) field emission under dc, enhanced and rf conditions; (2) experimental set-ups; (3) prebreakdown stage--dark current and radiation; (4) experimental observations and analysis of rf breakdown. The review ends with conclusions and an outline of work that remains to be done.
