Book excerpt: Several physical and mechanical parameters associated with 250 roof falls in 5 room-and-pillar mines of Martin, Pike, and Floyd Counties in eastern Kentucky were analyzed using multiple linear and forward stepwise regression, corrected for multiple comparisons, as well as discriminative analyses. Arch-shaped mine roof falls were associated with thicker first immediate roof beds and smaller widths of fallen debris. Laminar-shaped roof falls were discriminated by thinner coal seams, wider pillar widths, and deeper coal seams. Dome-shaped roof falls were significantly predicted by thicker coal seams, shallower coal seam depths, and smaller frequency of continuous miner operation during the roof fall. The size of the roof falls were associated with thicker immediate roof beds, location of entries, a predominance of shales, greater distance from the nearest working face and greater presence of cracks before the actual fall. In general, a strong relationship was found between the time of the roof fall, distance from the working face, the amount of sloughing of coal ribs, the number of cracks in the roof, the pressure of water, the length of time between coal excavation and the roof fall, and the type and number of resin bolts used. The presence of sloughing of the coal ribs was predicted by the increase of the distance of the roof fall from the face, the increase of the length of time after coal excavation, and decrease in the use of resin bolts. In addition, trend surface analyses was performed on two selected parameters from one mine site. It was determined from the trend that for the volume of a roof fall, the fifth order trend surface was the best fit, but when using the thickness of the first immediate layer the fourth order trend was the best fit.
