On the eve of her thirteenth birthday, Dani hatches a plan to run away and return home to Sea Grove, California, with its palm trees and ocean breezes. But her scheme gets complicated when Stormy Arigotti, a dyslexic nine-year-old, decides he wants in. As if that weren’t enough, a big-city family just set up shop on the rundown ranch Dani’s mother inherited from her husband—and the daughter, Pixie Smithson, wants to join the runaway group. Pixie’s the strangest girl Dani has ever met, but now they have to think about practical things, like raising money for three bus tickets. For Dani, Stormy, and Pixie, running away might not turn out to be the great adventure they envisioned. This ebook features an extended biography of Zilpha Keatley Snyder.
Download or read book Barryisms written by Barry McAlister and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a ways I could see a huge boat mostly buried in the sand, while examining the boat it seemed to have been a cabin cruiser about 65 feet long. Then walking about 100 feet south of the boat I was stunned to find a human body, not something you see every day. The person was mostly a skeleton although hair was evident on his head; jeans and shirt were tattered and the skull looking toward the sky where I could see some primitive dental work. After a couple more frightening traverses, while hanging in space, I thought we had passed the most difficult situations, wrong again! We came to a place where you're climbing along the cliff face with no more than 4 inches of rock on which to place your feet. That accelerated my heartbeat a tad! While hiking on a narrow dike I came face to face with a Bison almost blocking my passage. As I walked past he charged me. I yelled "Stop That!" and he stopped about 2 feet away. Few people have a desire or capability to experience 'the edge'. For most of my life I professed, "To experience life as close to the edge as possible to death, as this is the only way to live a life to its fullest." Being up here, among 12,000 foot peaks, in the enchanting time before sunrise, will always remain as a consummate memory in my mind. I was filled with a delightful wonderment. Then there came the serene Alpine Glow as the sun embraced the mountain peaks. As John Muir would say, "A noble experience." The sun would occasionally pop out, followed by dark clouds and usually hail or sleet. I didn't care; I was wet; in a numbing trance and reduced to taking baby steps forward-'one step at a time'. Around 6 pm I reached the road, which was back down at 10,000 feet. I had only traveled 8 1/2 miles, but on the most difficult trek of my life. We had chased the Gator near shore; I jumped from the boat in knee deep mud; struggling through the mud I grabbed the Gator with my left hand and immediately he came around and imbedded his teeth in my right arm. Just as quickly he let go and I loaded him into the boat. Mostly I was concerned with infection, but a little Rum in the holes took care of that.
Download or read book Foul written by John Klawitter and published by Double Dragon Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-10 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brando Mahr lost his mind when an artillery shell exploded close by. Upon returning to some form of consciousness, he found himself aphasiac and epileptic. He escaped from the hospital and found menial work in the basement of the UCLA library, where he re-learned language, unfortunately by reading mostly 18th century English penny dreadnaughts. Since the language has shifted somewhat in 200 plus years, the author has channeled the spirit of one of Brando's favorite writers from the 1700s to act as translator and sometimes commentator. Several years into his comeback finds Brando struggling on the lower rungs of Hollywood as a minor film producer and director. When his good friend Kieth Lagosi introduces him to football ex-great Ripper Brown, Brando sets out to develop Ripper's life story into a bio-pic dramatizing the player's glorious deeds. But Ripper has had a troubled past, and someone doesn't want his story told...and Brando's own difficulties begin to mount. When Rippers gorgeous blond wife is murdered, Brando is blamed by Ripper's friends and hauled in for a brutal interrogation by the Los Angeles police. It is clear that those Brando irritated in attempting to tell Ripper's story have turned against him...not one, but two sets of accomplished and deadly killers. Can Brando clear himself of the charge of murder? And, if he does, can he find the true killers and uncover why why these foul and cold-blooded killers will go to any lengths to keep their secrets hidden?

He survives on disability, money he makes from bareknuckle fights, and a stipend from the local Catholic diocese. Because of his head injury, and the lack of control it has left him with, Arthur has killed several men. He is protected though by the local mob and police mainly because he has relatives in both organizations. Arthur lives on one side of a house that he shares with a mentally ill cannibalistic former nun named Marie. His Uncle Kevin is a New York City police captain, and he enlists Arthur's aid in solving the brutal murder of one of Arthur's associates from years ago. Although Arthur's injury has left him with a speech impediment and cognitive difficulties, his intuition proves invaluable in locating the murderer. When the two meet, all Hell breaks loose.

Download or read book Christ Versus Arizona written by Camilo José Cela and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ versus Arizona turns on the events in 1881 that surrounded the shootout at the OK Corral, where Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and Virgil and Morgan Earp fought the Clantons and the McLaurys. Set against a backdrop of an Arizona influenced by the Mexican Revolution and the westward expansion of the United States, the story is a bravura performance by the 1989 Nobel Prize-winning author. A monologue by the naive, unreliable, and uneducated Wendell L. Espana, the book weaves together hundreds of characters and a torrent of interconnected anecdotes, some true, some fabricated. Wendell s story is a document of the vast array of ills that welcomed the dawning of the twentieth century, ills that continue to shape our world in the new millennium."

Download or read book Beyond Memory written by Max Mojapelo and published by African Minds. This book was released on 2008 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa possesses one of the richest popular music traditions in the world - from marabi to mbaqanga, from boeremusiek to bubblegum, from kwela to kwaito. Yet the risk that future generations of South Africans will not know their musical roots is very real. Of all the recordings made here since the 1930s, thousands have been lost for ever, for the powers-that-be never deemed them worthy of preservation. And if one peruses the books that exist on South African popular music, one still fi nds that their authors have on occasion jumped to conclusions that were not as foregone as they had assumed. Yet the fault lies not with them, rather in the fact that there has been precious little documentation in South Africa of who played what, or who recorded what, with whom, and when. This is true of all music-making in this country, though it is most striking in the musics of the black communities. Beyond Memory: Recording the History, Moments and Memories of South African Music is an invaluable publication because it offers a first-hand account of the South African music scene of the past decades from the pen of a man, Max Thamagana Mojapelo, who was situated in the very thick of things, thanks to his job as a deejay at the South African Broadcasting Corporation. This book - astonishing for the breadth of its coverage - is based on his diaries, on interviews he conducted and on numerous other sources, and we find in it not only the well-known names of recent South African music but a countless host of others whose contribution must be recorded if we and future generations are to gain an accurate picture of South African music history of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Download or read book Acting Badly written by Michael Scofield and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in the lives of people we all know, this story presents a dozen fictional Santa Feans trying to love, yet mistreating, each other the week before US forces invade Iraq. “The aggression that dominates American life today,” says author Michael Scofield, “goads them into brandishing their dark sides.” Married realtor Maxine Morgan, for instance, coaxes conservative mortgage broker Ron Kirkpatrick (and others) into bed. Ron’s not-quite-yet-psychotic wife Lila tries to seduce handyman Victor Valdez. High-tech writer Manny Barnes falsely promises his fiancée to give up in-your-face activism. CPA Chuck Ridley leaves his family for Silicon Valley CEO Bret, who changes his mind about war. In an ambiance of black humor and misfiring sex, readers will find themselves embracing Maxine’s attempt to escape from nymphomania after meeting a retired war correspondent, Victor’s desperate scheme to care for his mother while returning to carving Santos, Lila’s plan to destroy Maxine, Manny’s longing to give Joyce a baby, and Chuck’s joy in discovering he’s gay. You’ll laugh a lot--but you’ll also weep to see how our increasing turmoil at home in the United States mirrors our ongoing behavior overseas. Yale University graduate MICHAEL SCOFIELD received his MFA in Writing from Vermont College in 2002. Currently he teaches creative-writing skills to half a dozen students one-on-one. The author of two books of poems, "Silicon Valley Escapee" (2000) and "Whirling Backward into the World" (2006), he also has published books on bird-watching and do-it-yourself upholstering. Before moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1995, his wife and he ran a high-tech marketing-communications business from their home in Palo Alto, California.
