Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beautiful Austrian-born Romy Schneider was one of Europe's most popular film stars and a cult figure from the moment she played 'Sissi' (Empress Elisabeth of Austria) in the hugely popular Sissi trilogy in the mid-1950s. Although Schneider died in 1982 she continues to be one of the most popular stars in European cinema history. This book analyses her impressive career so as to place her within a range of European female stars, particularly Germanic and French, who defined cultural and ideological images of femininity on European screens. Schneider, who worked and was celebrated in Austria, Germany, Hollywood, and France, represents a fascinating case study to explore key questions of trans-European and transnational stardom, and Marion Hallet makes a valuable intervention in this growing field within star studies. Romy Schneider: A Star Across Europe shows how the representations of women stemming from Schneider's star image supported specific and shifting cultural and social agendas regarding femininity, from the 1950s to the 1980s. This book explores the significance of Schneider's image both when she was working and since, within Western European film culture and celebrity culture.

The star of over sixty movies including the cult, What's New Pussycat? Bloodline, The Assassination of Trotsky, The Cardinal and The Victors, at the height of her fame she ranked alongside Bardot, Loren and Cardinale. Reviled by the German Press when she fell in love with Alain Delon and moved to Paris and took French citizenship, she was sought out by the world's top producers and directors. Incredibly beautiful, after a brief flirtation with Hollywood, she chose to return to Europe where her talent shone brightly until her untimely death in 1982, aged just forty three. Romy has recently become a magnate for film makers and is currently the subject of two rival biopics. One is to be a big screen feature film and the other a high profile TV production. Jessica Schwarz of Perfume fame, is slated to play the lead role in Torsten Fischer's Romy. It is to be produced by Berlin based Phoenix-Film and has been written by Benedikt Roeskau. Shooting for the TV premier starts in Autumn 2009. Singer-actress Yvonne Catterfeld will play Schneider in Warner Bros' A Woman Like Romy, directed by Josef Rusnal. Book The Body of the Queen

Download or read book The Body of the Queen written by Regina Schulte and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inspired by existential thought, but using ethnographic methods, Michael Jackson explores a variety of contemporary topics, including 9/11, episodes from the war in Sierra Leone and its aftermath, the marginalization of indigenous Australians, the application of new technologies, mundane forms of ritualization, the magical use of language, the sociality of violence, the prose of suffering, and the discourse of human rights. Throughout this compelling work, Jackson demonstrates that existentialism, far from being a philosophy of individual being, enables us to explore issues of social existence and coexistence in new ways, and to theorise events as the sites of a dynamic interplay between the finite possibilities of the situations in which human beings find themselves and the capacities they possess for creating viable forms of social life."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Romy Schneider

Download or read book Romy Schneider written by Michael Petzel and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another book about Romy? Aren't there enough pictorials, biographies and memories already? Hasn't Romy Schneider's rollercoaster life been explored to the last detail? This luxurious illustrated volume proves this assumption wrong. It is a sensation even for ardent admirers of the great actress. This magnificent book collects gorgeous pictures of Romy's early films and unknown scenes from her private life. The photographs are mainly in color and show a brilliance never seen before, as they were reproduced from the original large size negatives and diapositives. For once, the pictures do not present Romy Schneider at the time of her French movies, but during the first five years of her career. It is the age of Agfacolor, with movies like sweet frosting, and a guaranteed happy ending. Most of the pictures in this large format photo collection have never been published before. These exclusive photos were found in missing archives and film productions or donated by close friends of Romy Schneider's, and also come from the famous Billy Kocian collection. This book contains color photos from the early movies Madchenjahre einer Konigin, Die Deutschmeister, Kitty und die groe Welt, Robinson soll nicht sterben, Monpti, Scampolo, Madchen in Uniform, Christine, Die Halbzarte, Ein Engel auf Erden, Die schone Lugnerin, and Katja, die ungekronte Kaiserin. For the first time a period of Romy's life which has only been treated fleetingly up until now is extensively documented. The movie presentations always show the same photos - this book gives a much more complete insight into the available material. This is why the reader is able to vividly comprehend Romy's coming-of-age. This photo collection is topped off by accounts from people who have worked with Romy Schneider, such as Fran Marischka (the son of Romy's discoverer, Ernst Marischka), executive producer Willy Egger, and assistant director Eva Ebner. The movies are also documented with detailed specifications as to staff and cast.

Book Sissi s World

  • Author : Maura E. Hametz
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA

  • ISBN : 1501313452

Download or read book Sissi s World written by Maura E. Hametz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sissi's World offers a transdisciplinary approach to the study of the Habsburg Empress Elisabeth of Austria. It investigates the myths, legends, and representations across literature, art, film, and other media of one of the most popular, revered, and misunderstood female figures in European cultural history. Sissi's World explores the cultural foundations for the endurance of the Sissi legends and the continuing fascination with the beautiful empress: a Bavarian duchess born in 1837, the longest-serving Austrian empress, and the queen of Hungary who died in 1898 at the hands of a crazed anarchist. Despite the continuing fascination with “the beloved Sissi," the Habsburg empress, her impact, and legacy have received scant attention from scholars. This collection will go beyond the popular biographical accounts, recountings of her mythic beauty, and scattered studies of her well-known eccentricities to offer transdisciplinary cultural perspectives across art, film, fashion, history, literature, and media.

Book Stars in World Cinema

Download or read book Stars in World Cinema written by Andrea Bandhauer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deflecting the attention from Hollywood, Stars in World Cinema fills an important gap in the study of film by bringing together Star Studies and World Cinema. A team of international scholars here bring their expertise and in-depth knowledge of world cultures and cinema to the study of stars and stardom from six continents, exploring their cultures, their local history and their global relevance. Chapters look at the role of acting, music, singing, painting and martial arts in the making of stars from Australia's indigenous population, Austria, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Japan, North and South Korea, Nigeria, the Philippines, the former Soviet Union, Spain, North and South America. Since the very beginnings of cinema, actors and stars have been central to its history and have been one of the medium's defining characteristics. They have also been fundamental to the marketing of cinema and have played a major part in the reception of films in many cultures. Stars in World Cinema examines stardom and the circulation of stars across borders, analysing how local star systems or non-systems construct stardom around the world. Contributors put into practice their local knowledge of history, language and cultural systems, to consider issues of hybridity, boundary crossing, the mobility of stardom, and embodied spectatorship, in order to further the understanding of stars in light the of recent interest in reception theory. Rooted in a multidisciplinary and polycentric approach, this book throws light on unexpected connections between stars and stardoms from different parts of the world, cutting across chronology, geographies and film history.

Book A Companion to German Cinema

Download or read book A Companion to German Cinema written by Terri Ginsberg and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Companion to German Cinema A Companion to German Cinema regards the shifting terrain of German filmmaking and film studies against their larger social contexts with twenty-two newly commissioned essays by well-established and younger scholars in the field. While several of these focus on classic topics such as Weimar cinema, Fifties cinema, New German Cinema and its legacy, and Holocaust film, the collection is distinguished by its focus on new developments and the innovative light they may shed on earlier practices. A Companion to German Cinema includes essays on Berlin Film, Neue Heimat Film, New Comedy, post-Wall documentaries, the post-Wende RAF genre, and Rabenmutter imagery, as well as on the persistently overlooked and under-theorized Indianerfilme, post-AIDS documentaries, sexploitation films, and new multicultural and transnational films produced in Germany under the auspices of the European Union. Organized into three “movements” representing the significance of these developments for their aesthetic theorization, A Companion to German Cinema challenges its readers to address critical gaps in the field with the aim of opening it further onto new terrains of intellectual engagement.

Book Harry Dean Stanton

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biography of the man Vanity Fair described as “the philosopher poet of character acting.” After a series of minor parts in forgettable westerns, Harry Dean Stanton gradually began to get film roles that showcased his laid-back acting style, appearing in Cool Hand Luke, Kelly’s Heroes, The Godfather: Part II, and Alien. He became a headliner in the eighties?starring in Wim Wenders’s moving Paris, Texas and Alex Cox’s Repo Man?but it was his extraordinary skill as a character actor that established him as a revered cult figure and kept him in demand throughout his career. Here, Joseph B. Atkins unwinds Stanton’s enigmatic persona, shedding light on his early life in West Irvine, Kentucky, and exploring his difficult relationship with his Baptist parents, his service in the Navy, and the events that inspired him to drop out of college and pursue acting. Atkins also chronicles Stanton’s early years in California, describing how he honed his craft at the renowned Pasadena Playhouse before breaking into television and movies. In addition to examining his acclaimed body of work, Atkins explores Harry Dean Stanton as a Hollywood legend, following his years rooming with Jack Nicholson, partying with David Crosby and Mama Cass, jogging with Bob Dylan, and playing poker with John Huston. Stanton is often remembered for his crowd-pleasing roles in movies like Pretty in Pink or Escape from New York, but this impassioned biography illuminates the entirety of his incredible sixty-year career, drawing on interviews with the actor’s friends, family, and colleagues.

Book Sein und Schein

Download or read book Sein und Schein written by Eero Tarasti and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existential semiotics is a new paradigm in the studies of signs, signification and communication. This book develops its theory further starting from the continental philosophy (Kant, Hegel, Jaspers, Heidegger, Arendt, Sartre) on one hand, yet remaining also faithful to the tradition of the European semiotics, particularly the Paris school. From the notions of being, doing and appearing the study applies them to crucial social problems of the contemporary world, and moreover to various so-called 'lesser arts' like performance andgastronomy. It also introduces some precursors of the approach. The book represents what can be called neosemiotics, the search for new theories and fields of the discipline.

Book Positions and Interpretations

Download or read book Positions and Interpretations written by Martin Schäfer and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structural and semantic properties of adverbials represent a still poorly understood area of sentential syntax and semantics in Germanic languages. In particular, it is an open question which different adverbial usages need to be distinguished, which usages are tied to which syntactic positions, and how these different usage can be formally analyzed. Focussing on adverbial adjectives in German, this study provides detailed answers to these questions. By distinguishing between verb-related adverbials and event-related adverbials, the author provides a new analysis of the large class of adverbials traditionally labelled as manner adverbials. It is shown that the two different classes are linked to different syntactic positions, and formal analyses and derivations for the two different usages are developed. The book is therefore of interest not only to anyone working on the linguistics of German but also to all linguists working on the syntax-semantics interface and the formal analysis of adverbials.
