Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vittoria Colonna, Vol. 2 of 3: A Tale of Rome, in the Nineteenth Century A great many of the higher ranks were ar rested as cognizant and accomplices of the late conspiracy. None of the cardinals were left at liberty many of them, after a week's con finement at the convent of the Convertite, were despatched, with an immense number of other ecclesiastics, to Civita Vecchia, and thence embarked for Corsica. The aged pre lates of the Church bore their misfortunes, for the most part, with serenity and patience Cardinal Borgia, amongst others, begged for his last opera ere he departed. It is a strong characteristic of the age, that the sacro-sanctity of the Popedom and its supporters were violat ed with consequences so trifling and that even in suffering degradation and dethronement, ban mots, mingled with the maledictions which these once powerful ecclesiastics flung upon their enemies. Book The Renaissance of Roman Colonization

Download or read book The Renaissance of Roman Colonization written by Jeremia Pelgrom and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The colonization policies of Ancient Rome followed a range of legal arrangements concerning property distribution and state formation, documented in fragmented textual and epigraphic sources. When antiquarian scholars rediscovered and scrutinized these sources in the Renaissance, their analysis of the Roman colonial model formed the intellectual background for modern visions of empire. What does it mean to exercise power at and over distance? This book foregrounds the pioneering contribution to this debate of the great Italian Renaissance scholar Carlo Sigonio (1522/3-84). His comprehensive legal interpretation of Roman society and Roman colonization, which for more than two centuries remained the leading account of Roman history, has been of immense (but long disregarded) significance for the modern understanding of Roman colonial practices and of the legal organization and implications of empire. Bringing together experts on Roman history, the history of classical scholarship, and the history of international law, this book analyzes the context, making, and impact of Sigonio's reconstruction of the Roman colonial model. It shows how his legal interpretation of Roman colonization originated and how it informed the development of legal colonial discourse, from imperial reform and colonial independence in the nascent United States of America to Enlightenment accounts of property distribution. Through a detailed analysis of scholarly and political visions of Roman colonization from the Renaissance to today, this book shows the enduring relevance of legal interpretations of the Roman colonial model for modern experiences of empire.

Book Etruscan Art

    Book Details:
  • Author : Otto Brendel
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 1995-10-25
  • ISBN : 0300064462
  • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book Etruscan Art written by Otto Brendel and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-10-25 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume--the first serious book in English on Etruscan art--was hailed for its broad scope, thorough knowledge, and clear exposition when it was published almost twenty years ago. Now brought back into print with an updated bibliography and bibliographical essay by Francesca R. Serra Ridgway, it remains an essential introduction for anyone interested in ancient art, history, and civilization. Otto Brendel's exploration of the art, culture, and society of Etruria takes us through its four main periods of creativity: the Villanovan and Orientalizing era, the Archaic era, the Classical era, and the Hellenistic era, when Etruscan art became extinct. According to Brendel, the Etruscans were deeply influenced by Greek styles but used Greek forms and concepts to further their own purposes. Etruscan art is a private art, aristocratic and luxurious but centered in the life of the family and a continuing life in the tomb. Many of the art forms and objects discussed--ceramics, metalware, jewelry, sculpture, and wall painting--are known to us through the discovery of tombs. Most of these objects had a clearly defined function but were also designed, with a high degree of quality and craftsmanship, to be decorative. The beautiful art of the Etruscans, illustrated and explained in this book, sheds much light on a people about whom we know little.
