Book Rome Georgia in Vintage Postcards

Download or read book Rome Georgia in Vintage Postcards written by Robin L. Scott and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001-11-20 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Rome, Georgia, was founded in 1834, Col. Daniel R. Mitchell suggested the name because of the surrounding hills, much like those of ancient Rome. Known today as "The City of Seven Hills," Rome has been voted one of the most livable cities in the South. It is the medical center of Northwest Georgia with a population of over 30,000, and a thriving community with abundant opportunities for business, education, and recreation. Historic views of Rome, seen through the eyes of the traveling postcard photographer, fill the pages of this engaging volume. Longtime residents of the community will delight in remembering area landmarks, including the old Clock Tower, Shorter College, Berry College, Myrtle Hill Cemetery, the downtown business section of Broad Street, and the neighboring communities of Lindale and Cave Spring.

Located in the northwest corner of Georgia, Rome consistently ranks as one of the most livable small cities in America. Situated in the southern foothills of the Appalachian Mountains at the confluence of three rivers, its scenic beauty is matched by the progressive spirit of its citizens. Georgia s Rome tells the stories of the city s founding, its upheaval in the Civil War, its rebirth from the ashes of that conflict, the growth of its industry and the origins of its vibrant arts community. The book also focuses on the leaders and personalities of the city, including a first lady of the United States and the father of naval aviation."

Book Permitted and Prohibited Desires

Download or read book Permitted and Prohibited Desires written by Anne Allison and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative study of gender and sexuality in contemporary Japan investigates elements of Japanese popular culture including erotic comic books, stories of mother-son incest, lunchboxes—or obentos—that mothers ritualistically prepare for schoolchildren, and children's cartoons. Anne Allison brings recent feminist psychoanalytic and Marxist theory to bear on representations of sexuality, motherhood, and gender in these and other aspects of Japanese culture. Based on five years of fieldwork in a middle-class Tokyo neighborhood, this theoretically informed, accessible ethnographic study provides a provocative analysis of how sexuality, dominance, and desire are reproduced and enacted in late-capitalistic Japan.

Book Legendary Locals of Rome

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Rome written by Rome Area History Museum and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1834, three men chanced to meet at a spring near where the Oostanaula and Etowah converge to form the Coosa River. Looking at the freshwater spring surrounded by healthy hardwood, they mused that this would make a good place for a community. They got together with two other landowners in the area and decided to start a town. And, of course, they wanted a name for it. Following the democratic process still honored by citizens today, they each chose their favorite names, such as Pittsburg, Warsaw, and Hillsboro. The name drawn was Rome. If the last name had been drawn, which was Hamburg, the town would be full of Hamburgers instead of the Romans that reside there today.
