The articles range over the full variety of cultural practices, including the written word, visual arts, history, philosophy, religion, and theatre during the romantic period (c. 1780–1840). But contributions to the discussion of pre- or post-romantic representations are also welcome. Since the romantic era was characterized by an emphasis on the vernacular, the title of journal has been chosen to reflect the Germanic root of the word. But the journal is interested in all European romanticisms – and not least the connections and disconnections between them – hence, the use of the plural in the subtitle. Romantik is a peer-reviewed journal supported by the Nordic Board for Periodicals in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOP-HS).

Book excerpt: This book explores the past and current traces that cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals used by humans have left in Anglophone literary fiction. In times of accelerated global warming, an acute pandemic, and breakthroughs in bioengineering practices, discussions on how to rethink the relationships to these animals have become as heated as perhaps never before. Livestock and Literature examines what literature has to contribute to these debates. In particular, it draws on counter-narratives to so-called livestock animals’ commodification in selected science- and speculative fiction (SF) works from the twenty-first century. These texts imagine ‘what if’ scenarios where "livestock" practice resistance, transform into biotechnologically modified, postanimal beings, or live in close companionship to humans. Via these three points of access, the study delineates the formal and thematic strategies SF authors apply to challenge anthropocentric and speciesist thought patterns. The aim is to shed light on how these alternative storyworlds expand readers' understanding of the lives of farmed animals; seeking insight into how literature shapes human-animal relationships beyond the page. It pursues this aim by advancing knowledge about business relations affecting workplace gender diversity. The research builds on Bourdieu’s field approach and implements a Thematic Analysis following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) guidelines. The findings of the book are based on data collected from unstructured interviews and secondary sources such as the official documents of national and international organizations, newspapers, legislation, and web pages of the related parties. The findings suggest that the implementation of gender diversity practices may require a transformation of perspective and the conditions regarding the political, economic, and cultural realm for realization of a pervasive movement. Due to the conservative and patriarchal culture, authoritarian rule and neoliberal policies, gender diversity and inclusion are not seen as issues that should be resolved through the commitment and collaboration of a field. Consequently, diversity management practices are instrumentalized by the business community as a means for corporate communication and image building rather than actively building a diverse workforce.

Book excerpt: The reason for such a study was that we recognised the basic and concise text of Heinrich Wölfflin’s book “Das Erklären von Kunstwerken” (The Explanation of Works of Art), published in the third edition by E. A. Seemann Verlag in Leipzig in 1940, especially on pages 7-24. Therefore, before presenting the relevant text, we would like to present our own views on the subject of “Explanation of Works of Art”. It should be noted that the explanation of a work of art means, from the very beginning, to deal with a very special field. The person who will explain the work of art is the person we call the conscious viewer. This conscious viewer can be an art historian, a philosopher or a critic, and we would like to point out that the person who will perform this action is both rare and special. One may also ask the following question: “Is it necessary to explain works of art?” We can answer “yes” to such a question without excessive interpretation. Because providing access to works of art to people belonging to every stratum of society, that is to say, to an audience that includes people from outside the majority art stratum, requires appropriate and healthy studies to be carried out in advance. It is these studies that will constitute the infrastructure that will enable the explanation of works of art. What kind of infrastructure will this be? Let us now express our views on this subject:

Book excerpt: Marcel Duchamp had made the museum fit into a bag. What about now? How would it be if we build the museum on a part of the human body, an arm, for instance? The answer would be: The works of avant-garde artists who have made a mark on art and history of art like Giotto, Bruegel, Giorgione, Michelangelo, Dürer, El Greco, Caravaggio, Goya, Turner, Monet, Cézanne, Matisse, Braque, Malevich, Kandinsky and Duchamp will be brought together as a part of a body (body art). We witness that a visual object, an art work, has been transformed into a human subject. And thus, this person, as both a work of art and a museum with a walking, sleeping, living brain, keeps his museum open to viewers except for sleeping hours without considering about sanctions as status, selective board or capital. It should be emphasized that the art critic in this project (2008-2009) focuses on the subject by acting with a curator’s conscience and by using all the opportunities of art. The work has to be unique and never intended before, not only in Turkey but also in the whole world in order to achieve its naturalness and originality. We activated this “Arm Museum” by setting off from this point of view and by dealing with the avant-garde artists, we chose works or a detail of a work of art highlighting the pioneering visual characteristics of these artists. First of all this museum is dynamic in every aspect. It serves everyone who is interested in the museum for twenty four hours and does only its work without discriminating citizen from villager, intellectual from ignorant, national from international, foreign language speaker from non-speaker.

Book excerpt: This book provides a critically informed account of the Turkey-born France-based director Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s debut film Mustang (2015), which tells the story of five orphaned sisters living with their grandmother and uncle in a remote Turkish village. The film’s familiar art-house style, and its universalising focus on female coming-of-age and feminist dissent, resulted in celebratory reviews from journalists and scholars of world cinema. Meanwhile, Mustang’s framing of youth in the Turkish national context, and its representation of gender, divided Turkish film critics and cultural theorists. These divisions led to a debate that questions the politics of transnational feminism by criticising the film’s failure to capture the local intricacies of the politics of gender and youth. While this book aims to locate Mustang within the intersection of emerging female and youth narratives in the cinema of Turkey, it also provides a critical understanding of the differences in Mustang’s local and global reception. This focus on the geopolitics of representation informs the diverse criteria this study uses to evaluate Ergüven’s stylistic choices. Engaging with both Anglophone and Turkish literature in youth cinema and gender studies, the book makes an original contribution to current debates on national/transnational cinemas and gender/youth studies and is an accessible reference for graduate and undergraduate study of contemporary film. The text is actually a mere indication of the... hidden treasure within.” Over fourteen years, from 1887-1901, he devoted his compositional output almost exclusively to texts and ideas drawn from a collection of German folk poetry entitled Des Knaben Wunderhorn: Alte deutsche Lieder, resulting in twenty-four songs which heavily inspired his first four symphonies. This study explores Mahler’s songs based on this poetry and identifies the connections the composer found between these products of Germany’s folk past and his own contemporary environment. The songs he created comment on and engage with Vienna’s musical life, Freudian theory, Mahler’s religious life, his family relationships, his views on women and romance, economic inequality, and wartime violence. As remnants of a folk tradition, the poems contained in Des Knaben Wunderhorn served the purpose of instructing young people on ways of conducting themselves, just as fairy tales do today. Mahler’s adaptation of these stories and his updating of them to serve audiences of his own time demonstrate the universality of the lessons these poems provide, both to audiences of Mahler’s day, and also to our own.

This has become apparent again since the fall of the Iron Curtain and the turn of the millennium when transnational developments have noticeably shaped Germany’s self-perception as a nation. This book examines the social and political impact of transnationalism with reference to current discourses of masculinity in novels by five contemporary male German-language authors. Specifically, it analyses how conceptions of the masculine interact with those of nationality, ethnicity, and otherness in the selected texts and assesses the new masculinities that result from those interactions. Exploring how local discourses of masculinity become part of transnational contexts in contemporary writing, the book moves a consideration of masculinities from a "native" into a transnational sphere.
