Book excerpt: Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Virginia Woolf, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, André Breton, Rousseau, Simone de Beauvoir: who could imagine a better group of walking companions? In this engaging and invigorating book, Bruce Baugh takes us on a philosophical tour, following in the footsteps and thoughts of some great philosophers and thinkers. How does walking reveal space and place and provide a heightened sense of embodied consciousness? Can walking in André Breton’s footsteps enable us to "remember" Breton’s experiences? A chapter on Sartre and Beauvoir investigates walking in relation to anxiety and our different ways of responding to our bodies. Walking in the Quantocks, Baugh seeks out the connection between Coleridge’s walking and his poetic imagination. With Rousseau and Nietzsche, he examines the link between solitary mountain walks and great thoughts; with Kierkegaard, he looks at the urban flâneur and the disjunction between outward appearances and spiritual inwardness. Finally, in Sussex and London, Baugh explores how Virginia Woolf transposed a Romantic nature pantheism to London in Mrs. Dalloway. Philosophers’ Walks provides a fresh and imaginative reading of great philosophers, offering a new way of understanding some of their major works and ideas.

Book Walks in the World

Download or read book Walks in the World written by Roger Gilbert and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century no form of experience has been more frequently taken up by poets eager to capture both the openness and fluidity of life and the aesthetic closure of an artwork than that of a walk. Examining the walk poem, Roger Gilbert contends that at its heart is the "desire to keep what we have lived." What is the appeal of the walk poem for modern American poets? According to Gilbert, it provides a ready-made frame within which to explore the full range of individual consciousness as it responds to and reflects on the world immediately at hand. The unstructured, plotless character of the walk allows poets to move freely from place to place, image to image, thought to thought. Suggesting that the walk poem strikes a compromise between the American obsession with process or movement and more traditionally mimetic concerns, Gilbert shows how it enables the poet to apprehend the world as horizon rather than landscape. Through perceptive and extended analyses of walk poems by Frost, Stevens, Williams, Roethke, Bishop, O'Hara, Snyder, Ammons, and Ashbery, he uncovers a spectrum of representational strategies for transforming passing experiences into the more lasting substance of poetry. Walks in the World addresses anyone who takes poetry seriously. Originally published in 1991. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Delves into the highs and lows of . . . a talented, young Black football athlete and first-generation college student, navigating identity and race.” —Dennis Kennedy, founder and chairman of National Diversity Council Race Against . . . Against Race is the story of one young man’s dream of playing college football and the social development that unfolded as he tried to fit in on a predominantly white campus. He slowly integrates into his new environment by staying positive, being himself and focusing on shared experiences with his teammates and classmates. Within this book, Bo-Dean paints a picture of a student athletes’ campus life in the ’80s and aims to examine the issues of race through his participation in college sports. Throughout his time as a student athlete, he discovers that he and his teammates learn from each other on and off the field by having the race conversation to develop and grow their relationships based on the foundation of sports, mutual respect, and acceptance. “Sanders tells a riveting story of pushing himself to reach the goal that he thought mattered most—becoming a collegiate and professional football player. It is a gripping tale of growing up under the weightiness of segregation and poverty in the South and leaving home to go north to start life on his terms.” —Allener M. Baker-Rogers, EdD, coauthor of They Carried Us “He provides a unique perspective on building relationships with teammates and classmates from different socio-economic backgrounds and races by reaching out, talking, and listening. In his first-ever book, Sanders explores how diversity and inclusion in sports and multiculturalism impacted his personal relationships in college.” —Delco Times
