Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Riddles: Rhetorics of Obscurity from Romanticism to Freud explores how the riddle becomes a figure for reading and writing in early German Romanticism and how this model then enables Sigmund Freud's approach to the psyche. It traces a migration of ideas from literature to psychoanalysis and argues that the relationship between them must be situated at the methodological level. Through readings of texts by August Wilhelm, Friedrich Schlegel, G.W.F. Hegel, and Ludwig Tieck Reading Riddles documents how the Romantics expand the field of poetic signification to include obscure, distorted signs and how they applied this rhetoric of obscurity to the self. The book argues that this model of self and signification plays a central role in the formulation of Freud's psychoanalytic theory. If the self is a riddle, as many in the nineteenth century claim, Freud takes the figure seriously and interprets the mind according to all the structures and techniques of that textual genre.

Book excerpt: Romantic Riddles is a collection of poems that examines the essence of love and the questions, puzzles, and uncertainties that accompany each kiss, intimate encounter, and relationship we experience in our lives. Each poem is infused with some aspect of the heart's greatest puzzle: Love. American Poet John Everett Button asks, "if the heart could speak, what would it say?" In asking that very question, an entire world overcame him. Scenes of unfathomable circumstances consumed him. Everything he experienced became the Romantic Riddles collection. Romantic Riddles is divided into two parts: "The Love Dialectic," which describes the movement of love between two people and "Riddles of the Heart," which are poetic parables about love itself. "The Love Dialectic," describes and demonstrates the natural movement of love between two people through short vivid poems. Insofar as part I is a poetic description of the movement of love itself, part II is a clear but frightening abstraction of this concept. The poetic parables of Part II challenge the reader's expectations and force a deeper reflection of their own heart.

Book The Riddles of Human Society

Download or read book The Riddles of Human Society written by Conrad L. Kanagy and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1999-01-27 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are all U.S. Presidents white men? Why does technology enchant us? Why do some people commit suicide? Why are sports so important to Americans? How will the Internet change society? Why do people ′do good′? This very teachable and short new introductory text explores these and other ′riddles′ to stir students′ sociological curiosity and promote active learning as the sure path toward mastering the fundamentals of the discipline. "Once again, Pine Forge Press has done us Intro teachers a great service with The Riddles of Human Society. The authors have produced a remarkable text, designing it from the point of view of how students actually acquire sociological tools and imagination when reflecting on their social world. ... It is written as a conversation with readers, yet is organized with learning tools like chapter summaries, discussion questions, and an in-text glossary. It considers a broad range of topics from micro to macro levels, thus uniquely blending the best of a shorter textbook and a monograph. It will serve very well as a main text for introductory sociology courses. I recommend it highly." Stephen Sharkey, Department of Social Science, Alverno College

This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American teenagers Sam and Salah lead fairly uncomplicated lives. But when their class embarks on a field trip to Egypt, complications arise in the forms of Rosie and Octavia, two British beauties who won't be easily charmed. Amid luscious scenes of Egyptian culture and history, these four star-crossed lovers will endure mistakes, missteps, and plenty of misunderstandings before they can achieve their hearts' desires. Told from four alternating points of view, Tyne O'Connell's latest novel is both a fast-paced comedy of errors, and a heartfelt romance that proves sometimes the greatest complication of all is love.

Book The Romantic World of Puccini

Download or read book The Romantic World of Puccini written by Iris J. Arnesen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giacomo Puccini, composer of some of the world's most popular operas, including La Boheme, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly, was also a highly literary person who based his librettos on existing works of literature. This work explores that literary inheritance in an effort to enhance the listener's appreciation of the operatic experience. The author argues that the majority of Puccini's operas compose a grand cycle that finds its roots in the romance genre of 12th century France, serving to celebrate the strong, independent heroine. Via a close examination of the source works, the librettos, and the scores, this book offers fresh perspective on Puccini's legacy.

Book The Female Body in Medicine and Literature

Download or read book The Female Body in Medicine and Literature written by Andrew Mangham and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a range of texts from the seventeenth century to the present, The Female Body in Medicine and Literature explores accounts of motherhood, fertility, and clinical procedures for what they have to tell us about the development of women's medicine. The essays here offer nuanced historical analyses of subjects that have received little critical attention, including the relationship between gynecology and psychology and the influence of popular art forms on so-called women's science prior to the twenty-first century. Taken together, these essays offer a wealth of insight into the medical treatment of women and will appeal to scholars in gender studies, literature, and the history of medicine.

Book excerpt: "A fresh new perspective that will be a true revolution to readers and will open new lines of discussion on . . . the importance of the city of New Orleans for generations to come." —Dr. Michael White, jazz clarinetist, composer, and Keller Endowed Chair at Xavier University of LA An untold authentic counter-narrative blues history and the first written by an African American blues artist All prior histories on the blues have alleged it originated on plantations in the Mississippi Delta. Not true, says author Chris Thomas King. In The Blues, King present facts to disprove such myths. This book is the first to argue the blues began as a cosmopolitan art form, not a rural one. As early as 1900, the sound of the blues was ubiquitous in New Orleans. The Mississippi Delta, meanwhile, was an unpopulated sportsman's paradise—the frontier was still in the process of being cleared and drained for cultivation.? Expecting these findings to be controversial in some circles, King has buttressed his conclusions with primary sources and years of extensive research, including a sojourn to West Africa and interviews with surviving folklorists and blues researchers from the 1960s folk-rediscovery epoch.? New Orleans, King states, was the only place in the Deep South where the sacred and profane could party together without fear of persecution, creating the blues.
