Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Romance: Specimens of Its Chief Authors A more discouraging 'foreword' can seldom have been penned; and one cannot but admire the magnanimity of the publisher who could print it without remonstrance. Carlyle, however, goes on to point out other serious difficulties in the way of satisfactory selection. The field open to him was severely limited by causes for which neither be nor his authors could beheld responsible; so that, as he puts it, 'often not the excellence of a work but the humble considerations of its size, its subject, and its being untranslated, had to determine my choice.' This fact, he adds, has especially to be borne in mind with regard to two of the authors, Fouque and Richter. The former's best-known work Undine had already found a translator, and both the Hesperus and the Titan of the latter were no doubt deemed inadmissible on the ground of length. But to us in these days the choice of authors seems much more curious than the selection from among their works - so unequal do they now ap pear in merit, and so vastly does one of them tower over the rest. Whether Jean Paul der einzige still enjoys the reputation among his countrymen which once was his, or whether, unlike his great English admirer, and in some sense imitator, he has failed to reconcile posterity by sheer force of genius to the eccentricities of his style, I hardly know; but, as compared with his companions in these volumes, there can be no doubt of his superior claims to posthumous life. Musaeus, Tieck, Hoff'mann, Fouque, are none of them lacking in merit of various kinds, but for humour and imagination, for power of thought and mastery of language, the strongest of them will not bear comparison with Richter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of Germany It is essentially subjective. German mediaeval poetry may not be as successful in making the golden Middle Age gorgeous upon earth again as other mediaeval literatures; but it gives us more penetrating glimpses into the inner life of the denizen of the Middle Ages, and thereby awakens a sympathetic interest in the modern reader. Its interpretation, again, of that great new-birth which we associate with the word Reformation appears in the still modern form Of a liberation of the individual from a world that took no stock of individuals. Lastly, the great German literature of the eighteenth century deals constantly with problems, ethic as well as aesthetic, which are as vital and. Real to us today as they were to that far-off time. We have to accept frankly the comparative absence of the formal beauty which the Latin peoples of Europe can point to in their literatures Germany has no Dante, Ariosto or Tasso; no Lope de Vega; no Corneille or Moliere but, on the other hand, her essential contribution to the wealth of the world's imagination has always centred in the interpretation Of heart and soul. Her literature, in spite of its broken endeavour, its fragmentary incomplete ness, possesses in this universal subjectivity a. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strife a Romance of Germany and Italy But, alas! Dear reader, I have no such entertain ment for you. Snow covers the ivy that grows over the Old cas tle-walls, the trees are mantled with snow, and the whole plain in the valley of the Elbe is one great blank. The steep hillsides on the opposite banks Of the river, cut into narrow terraces for the vine growers, present a dreary aspect. Rows Of blackened sticks standing upright, and the gnarled vines shrinking from their stiff support, remind one Of some humans, as we see them among the peasantry at the time Of the vintage, when they have abused the gifts Of Dame Nature, and converted the luscious fruit Of these same vines into stupefying draughts. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in the Ethics of the Early Romantic School in Germany It is very probable that any writer or group of writers will be subjected to the pen of the critic, whether they abound in deficiencies or not. But, should the ethics of the individual or group diverge somewhat from the line drawn by society, there is no limit to the untold severity of merciless criticism, no ele ment of defense in the many comments. Still it must be remem bered that no one can calculate the depth of a body of water by merely scanning the surface; nor can anyone fully realize the profundity of any situation by viewing it superficially. In other words, it is absolutely necessary that the critic resort to detailed investigation. He must go below the surface to solve the complicated problems which may be presented. Thereby he will acquaint himself with the factors that mould the pattern for the times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
