Book The Archaeology of Manila Galleons in the American Continent

Download or read book The Archaeology of Manila Galleons in the American Continent written by Scott S. Williams and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book devoted to the topic of Manila galleon shipwrecks in North America; previous research on Manila galleons either has focused on the economics of the Manila galleon trade or has been limited to reports of the galleon wreck sites in the western Pacific salvaged for their cargoes. All three North American shipwrecks are protected under the historic preservation laws of the United States or Mexico, and each shipwreck site has been investigated by professional archaeologists seeking to answer research questions posed in peer-reviewed research designs. The majority of Manila galleon wrecks are found in the western Pacific and were salvaged by treasure hunters rather than recovered by archaeologists. The three North American shipwrecks represent the most protected Manila galleon archaeological sites, so their potential for future archaeological research is higher than for many of the extant shipwrecks of the western Pacific.

Book Formation Processes of Maritime Archaeological Landscapes

Download or read book Formation Processes of Maritime Archaeological Landscapes written by Alicia Caporaso and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into the anthropogenic and taphonomic processes that affect the formation of maritime archaeological resources has grown significantly over the last decade in both theory and the analysis of specific sites and associated material culture. The addition of interdisciplinary inquiry, investigative techniques, and analytical modeling, from fields such as engineering, oceanography, and marine biology have increased our ability to trace the unique pathways through which archaeological sites progress from initial deposition to the present, yet can also link individual sites into an integrated socio-environmental maritime landscape. This edited volume presents a global perspective of current research in maritime archaeological landscape formation processes. In addition to “classically” considered submerged material culture and geography, or those that can be accessed by traditional underwater methodology, case studies include less-often considered sites and landscapes. These landscapes, for example, require archaeologists to use geophysical marine survey equipment to characterize extensive areas of the seafloor or go above the surface to access maritime archaeological resources that have received less scholarly attention.

Book Early Navigation in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book Early Navigation in the Asia Pacific Region written by Chunming Wu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the international academic workshop on “Early Navigation in the Asia-Pacific Region: A Maritime Archaeological Perspective” held from June 21-23, 2013 at Harvard University campus and organized by Harvard-Yenching Institute. It includes high-quality papers focusing on the historical shipwrecks investigated by underwater archaeologists from Eastern Asian, including southern China, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia, and North America, including California, Oregon and Washington in the US, as well as Mexico. These investigations reveal the history of the early pan-Pacific navigation and maritime globalization from the 16th to the 18th century, covering the background and formation, concept and practice, as well as the results and influence of this early globalization and global economy, emphasizing the maritime archaeological evidence of Spanish exploration of transportation between East Asia and North America. The book provides an excellent opportunity for maritime archaeologists from both sides of the Pacific to share the latest findings and new developments in maritime archaeological exploration. It discusses 16-18th century nautical trade and maritime cultural history and provides a comprehensive overview of research work in the Asia-Pacific region.

Book excerpt: ENJOY HOT LOVE AND ROMANCE IN THE PHILIPPINES Archeology Intern Heather Kelly gains the opportunity of her academic life and is assigned to work with world famous Robert Kraig, a modern Indiana Jones, doing excavations all over the world. His current work deals with Jose Rizal, the independence hero of the Philippines. She is finishing up her doctoral dissertation on the Spanish American War and needs the information about Rizal, which if all goes well, will likely result in her attaining her doctorate and a lucrative teaching position in California. She doesn't expect Robert to be so unmarried, masculine and fit, and finds him extremely attractive. Robert is madly in love with a Filipina, Edie Santos, who owns and manages a respected, successful modeling agency and lands contracts in Davao City and Los Angeles. She is off on her assignments for weeks at a time, and Robert is lonely for Edie and starts drinking too much. Robert's colleagues warn him that Heather is a sex predator and playgirl. While Edie is away, Heather makes her move on Robert after a professional presentation at the Manila Historical Preservation Office. Edie hears through the grapevine that Robert and Heather had sex, but Robert isn't convinced because of his cloudy recollection after too much wine. Then again, it depends on how you describe sex. Will Edie forgive his transgression?
