Download or read book Romanism Versus the Public School System Classic Reprint written by Daniel Dorchester and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romanism Versus the Public School System In writing my late book, Christianity in the United States from the Earliest Settlement to the Present Time, much material came into my hands which could not be appropriately introduced into that volume, but which is of value to American citizens. Valuable articles in the editorial and other columns of the Christian Union, in May, June, and July, 1888, have rendered much aid to the author. The recent agitation of the Catholic school contest, in Boston and elsewhere, prompted me to enter into the discussion, for the benefit of my own congregation, and also for the public at large. The result is this little Book, which I hope will help to an understanding of the questions involved; questions soon more fully to engross public attention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rome's Assault on Our Public Schools: Bane and Antidote It is a principle laid down in that magnificent document, the Declaration of Independence, drawn up in 1776, that there shall be no taxation without representation. It had been the violation of that principle on the part of the King of England that led to the achievement Of the liberties of this coun try. F or be it understood, that it was not the taxation of the colonies, but the taxation without representation that led to the war Of Independence. When, then, you support or indorse a system of this nature, you strike at the very root of constitutional liberty - you sap the very foundation on which national greatness as a. Great liberal nation repose, and so sooner or later, the evil consequences of such a proceeding are certain to be felt sooner or later the bitter fruits of such a policy are certain to be tasted. What, then, is the duty of the loyal, God-fearing Christian men Of this land? It is to make com common cause against this common enemy. It is to check by every means in their power the onward march Of the hosts of unbelief and infidelity that are now marching forward with such giant strides through the length and breadth of this great nation, and for the existence Of which the common school system is mainly responsible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romanism Versus Protestantism Thus you see that instead Of revocation, or even modification of dogmas that have brought to the In quisition innocence and virtue and that have drenched the land in the blood of the best men and women, we have the strongest reaffirmation of arrogant claims. Infallibility! What does it mean? Not capable of erring; entirely exempt from liability to mistake. Who is this that makes himself equal to God? Pope Pius IX., with his five hundred and thirty-five bish ops, gravely telling the people of this age that he, pope Pius tx, is infallible, exempt from liability to mistake, equal to God; and we, as Protestants, are anathematized if we dare deny it! Yes, put under the ban Of Rome - yea, of God - if we deny it. And being condemned, we would be executed if Rome had the power to do it. We look in vain along back the track of time to find this infallibiltiy. Instead of this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romanism: Incompatible With Republican Institutions The subject proposed for tins essay involves principles vital to the welfare of every age and country. Religious belief is implanted in the nature of man. It is the only bond that connects him with the skies. The needs of the body, its pains and even its pleasures perpetually remind him that he is born of earth, and must return whence he came; but this feeling assures him that, in part at least, he may claim a nobler origin and more important destiny. It is the impulse of an immortal and imprisoned spirit, a yearning after the freedom of a higher world. The vice and barbarism of a people will not destroy it; they may oppress it with the most senseless and fantastic ceremonies, they may stifle it beneath cruel rights and degrading customs, but it will still exist; they can never eradicate it. Taney, Chief Justice of the United States Fatal to Popery as are the objections drawn from its doctrines, yet more fatal are those drawn from its ex ternal arrangements, its government, its despotism, its spirit, its legends, its relics, and its influence on the moral, social, and political interests of the world. I have been often solicited to present this aspect of the subject to the public; but to do this as I desired, I must needs see Romanism at home-i must visit the Lady of the Seven Hills in her own house, where she is permitted to exercise her maternal authority just as she wills. With this object in view, I made a flying visit to Europe within the last year, in company with a friend, who has attained a distinguished rank in-'the medical profession, and who witnessed with me nearly all the scenes on the Continent described in these let ters, and who will testify that they are not overdrawn. Should he do so, he might justly be judged a traitor, in the pay of the enemy. So, when God's watchman, guarding the dearest interests of church and state, sees rising from other lands the clouds of desolation which betoken the ruin wrought by tyranny; when he marks the steady aggression of the enemies of truth and man; hears their threatenings and sees their weapons; when he observes the fleeing millions who, running away from Oppression, seek in our freer government a refuge from their tyrants, he cannot wait until the foot of the foeman is on the threshold of our gates, his hand on our throats, and his decrees proclaimed in our market-places, before he sounds the alarm.
