Book Romania Culture Smart

Download or read book Romania Culture Smart written by Debbie Stowe and published by Kuperard. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A land of mountains, hills, and fertile plains, Romania is a tourist destination waiting to be discovered. It is a rich and complex country: a place whose cities are home to beautiful parks and vibrant cultural scenes; whose people welcome guests warmly into their homes, sharing the best of whatever they have, and party into the night, suffused by Latin joie de vivre. Buffeted over time between three great powers—the West, Russia, and Turkey—Romania betrays the cultural influences of each, and it can be a difficult place to get a handle on. Culture Smart! Romania provides an indispensable tool for the foreign visitor, digging deep behind the clichés, explaining many of the behavioral quirks of the people, smoothing your path toward better understanding, and outlining the many attractions—cultural, social, and geographical—that await you in this underexplored part of Europe.

Book Folkloric Aspects of the Romanian Imaginary and Myth

Download or read book Folkloric Aspects of the Romanian Imaginary and Myth written by Claudia Costin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores a selection of significant and topical elements from the vast amount of Romanian folkloric and mythological material. It sheds light on the mythical-ritualistic aspects of three complex calendar holydays (specifically The Lads of Brașov, Călușarii, and Sânzienele), whose ritualistic sequences, laden with mythical-symbolical reminiscences, were lost during the Communist period and are known today thanks to their spectacular features. Such aspects include demonic mythical beings (such as Iele, Rusalii, Știma Apei, The Woodwoman, and Strigoi) that define the collective imaginary; significant myths that have found their artistic expression in fairytales and legends; and the role of women in traditional Romanian society.

Download or read book Manele in Romania written by Margaret Beissinger and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume examines manele (sing. manea), an urban Romanian song-dance ethnopop genre that combines local traditional and popular music with Balkan and Middle Eastern elements. The genre is performed primarily by male Romani musicians at weddings and clubs and appeals especially to Romanian and Romani youth. It became immensely popular after the collapse of communism, representing for many the newly liberated social conditions of the post-1989 world. But manele have also engendered much controversy among the educated and professional elite, who view the genre as vulgar and even “alien” to the Romanian national character. The essays collected here examine the “manea phenomenon” as a vibrant form of cultural expression that engages in several levels of social meaning, all informed by historical conditions, politics, aesthetics, tradition, ethnicity, gender, class, and geography.

Book The Romanian Mass Media and Cultural Development

Download or read book The Romanian Mass Media and Cultural Development written by David Berry and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling book assesses the development of the mass media since the Romanian Revolution in December 1989 and the media's impact on cultural development, the public sphere, civil society and democracy. It controversially claims that Romania's failure to experience a thoroughgoing enlightenment project in its entire history remains a major obstacle for producing democratic ownership of the media and democratic development of society. Analyzing both the print and broadcast media and their respective effects on development, the book also discusses the effects of Romanian law on media and societal development, ethics, and media responsibilities. It concludes, however, that far from having an absolutely negative impact on Romanian post-communism, the media has helped produce a contradictory empirical form that equally contains positive moments in terms of subjective cultural development.

Book History and Myth in Romanian Consciousness

Download or read book History and Myth in Romanian Consciousness written by Lucian Boia and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a considerable difference between real history and discourse history - this book stems from this idea. The author points out that history is constantly reconstructed, adapted and sometimes mythified from the perspective of the present day, of present states of mind and ideologies. Boia closely examines the process of historical culture and conscience in nineteenth and twentieth century Romania, particularly concentrating on the impact of the national ideology on history. Based upon his findings, the author identifies several key mythical configurations and analyses the manner in which Romanians have reconstituted their own highly ideologized history over the last two centuries. The strength of History and Myth in Romanian Consciousness lies in the author's ability to fully deconstruct the entire Romanian historiographic system and demonstrate the increasing acuteness of national problems in general, and in particular the exploitation of history to support national ideology.

  • ISBN : 1592110444
  • Pages : 97 pages

Download or read book Miorita written by Ernest Latham and published by Center for Romanian Studies. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by words and photographs illustrates and explains the central role of the ballad Miorița in Romanian culture. By combining the insights of an American and a Romanian scholar with a vision of Romanian pastoral life developed by a leading American photographer, the reader is introduced to one of the most complicated and elusive cultural icons in European civilization. It is, however, one that continues to permeate Romanian culture and offers, to those who take the time to study it, an approach to life which will resonate closely with modern experience and understanding. This album benefits from two introductions, one by an American specialist in Romanian studies and one by a Romanian professor of Romanian literature, providing different perspectives on the Miorița, to ensure that the reader will understand why the ballad is central to Romanian consciousness and why its message is of great seriousness and insight for humanity in general. The photographer, Laurence Salzmann, made the photographs in 1981 while on a fellowship in Poiana Sibiului, a small village of transhumance shepherds in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. Dr. Ernest Latham, who conceived of the exhibit as American cultural attaché in Bucharest in the 1980s, contributes an introduction which recounts his personal involvement with the Miorița, the exhibit, and the new English translation developed to caption the photographs. Alexandru Husar was a distinguished professor of Romanian literature at the University of Iași. He provides an introduction that guides the reader into the deeper meaning and importance of the Miorița.
