Book Constantin Brancusi

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sanda Miller
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Constantin Brancusi written by Sanda Miller and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanda Miller is the first Western European historian to have subjected Brancusi to exhaustive analysis: being Romanian by birth, she has a full knowledge of the literature and is able to bring to bear Romanian memoirs, literary texts, histories, and recent scholarship with confidence and to make a new range of knowledge accessible to western readers. The material on Brancusi's childhood and training both as a craftsman and fine artist at the School of Arts and Crafts in Craiova and the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest respectively, provides a new basis for the assessment of his work, after as well as before his arrival in Paris. Brancusi is accepted as a major figure in histories of twentieth-century sculpture. Where the problems of sculpture, craft and materials, of formalism and the avant-garde or of 'primitivism' in modernism are concerned, he will remain a major figure to be discussed. This is a substantial contribution to knowledge about Brancusi and his work which includes many illustrations never previously published.

Book Romanian Contemporary Art 2010 2020

Download or read book Romanian Contemporary Art 2010 2020 written by Adrian Bojenoiu and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Art Religion and Resistance in Post Communist Romania

Download or read book Art Religion and Resistance in Post Communist Romania written by Maria Alina Asavei and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illuminates the interconnections between politics and religion through the lens of artistic production, exploring how art inspired by religion functioned as a form of resistance, directed against both Romanian national communism (1960-1989) and, latterly, consumerist society and its global market. It investigates the critical, tactical and subversive employments of religious motifs and themes in contemporary art pieces that confront the religious ‘affair’ in post-communist Romania. In doing so, it addresses a key gap in previous scholarship, which has paid little attention to the relationship between religious art and political resistance in communist Central and South-East Europe.

Book East Central European Art Histories and Austria

Download or read book East Central European Art Histories and Austria written by Julia Allerstorfer and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The specific role of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the later nation of Austria within the formation of regional art histories in East Central Europe has received little attention in art historical research so far. Taking into account the era of the Dual Monarchy as well as the period after 1989, the contributions analyze and critically scrutinize the imperial legacies, transnational transfer processes and cultural hierarchies in art historiographies, artistic practices and institutional histories. Consisting of 17 texts, with new commissions and one reprint, case studies, monographic essays and interviews grouped thematically into two sections, the anthology proposes a pluriversal narrative on regional, cultural and political contexts.

Book Mapping Cultural Identities and Intersections

Download or read book Mapping Cultural Identities and Intersections written by Mustafa Kirca and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates identity discourses and self-constructions/de-constructions in various texts through imagological readings of films, narratives, and art works, examining different layers of cultural identities, on the one hand, and measuring the literary reception of ethnic identity constitution to reveal both the self and hetero images, on the other. The book features theoretical and analytical approaches with insights borrowed from multiple disciplines, and mainly focuses on the application of imagological perspectives in the fields of literature and translation, and specifically in literary works “carried over” from one culture to another. It will be of interest for scholars and researchers working in the fields of literature, translation, cultural studies, and imagology, as well as for students studying in these fields.
