One of them afterwards confessed to me that her Muscovite sympathies vanished at sight of the first Cossack, so ugly and so dirty was he. I could not agree with her. Soldiers, and officers too, are dirty on campaign, and Antinous himself could not be prepossessing if black with dust and bedabbled with perspiration. But the Cossacks are by no means so ugly as is traditionally believed. The greater number have fair hair, and the moustache of nearly all is bleached white by the sun. Many have good features, of an English rather than German type ; and though I observed the Tartar cheekbone to be more common than in other regiments I have seen, it was very far from being a rule."

Additional factors included Russian goals of recovering territorial losses endured during the Crimean War of 1853-56, re-establishing itself in the Black Sea and supporting the political movement attempting to free Balkan nations from the Ottoman Empire. The Russian-led coalition won the war, pushing the Ottomans back all the way to the gates of Constantinople but for the timely intervention of the western European great powers.
