Book Romania in the Russo Turkish War

Download or read book Romania in the Russo Turkish War written by Frederick Boyle and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is no record of the war in progress, nor even a diary. It professes to be nothing more than a series of sketches drawn during the campaign, linked only by such telegraphic threads as are needed to make the story comprehensible. Had not the Grand Duke Nicholas-Nikolayevich taken offence at some of my letters, they would never have been reprinted, for I had not the least idea of publishing a volume whilst I followed the Russian march(...) The Bucharest ladies were not a little impressed and not a little frightened. They looked at each other blankly, with little shrugs of the shoulder to express amaze and distaste. One of them afterwards confessed to me that her Muscovite sympathies vanished at sight of the first Cossack, so ugly and so dirty was he. I could not agree with her. Soldiers, and officers too, are dirty on campaign, and Antinous himself could not be prepossessing if black with dust and bedabbled with perspiration. But the Cossacks are by no means so ugly as is traditionally believed. The greater number have fair hair, and the moustache of nearly all is bleached white by the sun. Many have good features, of an English rather than German type ; and though I observed the Tartar cheekbone to be more common than in other regiments I have seen, it was very far from being a rule."

Download or read book An Overview of the Russo Turkish Wars Discover the Reasons and Important Events of the Wars written by Jennell Lafarge and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russo-Turkish wars (or Ottoman-Russian wars) were a series of twelve wars fought between the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire between the 16th and 20th centuries. It was one of the longest series of military conflicts in European history. Except for the war of 1710-11 and the Crimean War, which is often treated as a separate event, the conflicts ended disastrously for the stagnating Ottoman Empire; conversely they showcased the ascendancy of Russia as a European power after the modernisation efforts of Peter the Great in the early 18th century. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 (Turkish: 93 Harbi, lit. 'War of '93', named for the year 1293 in the Islamic calendar; Bulgarian: Руско-турска Освободителна война, romanized: Rusko-turska Osvoboditelna vojna, "Russian-Turkish Liberation war") was a conflict between the Ottoman Empire and the Eastern Orthodox coalition led by the Russian Empire and composed of Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, and Montenegro. Fought in the Balkans and in the Caucasus, it originated in emerging 19th-century Balkan nationalism. Additional factors included Russian goals of recovering territorial losses endured during the Crimean War of 1853-56, re-establishing itself in the Black Sea and supporting the political movement attempting to free Balkan nations from the Ottoman Empire. The Russian-led coalition won the war, pushing the Ottomans back all the way to the gates of Constantinople but for the timely intervention of the western European great powers. Book excerpt: A history and a personal account of great battle in a single volume This unique Leonaur edition contains the well known and highly regarded personal account of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-8, by an Australian volunteer serving as a doctor with Turkish forces. Initially attracted by a favourable remuneration package, the mercenary author of, 'Under the Red Crescent' often found himself much closer to the thick of the action than his calling might reasonably suggest. The principal actions about which his narrative revolves are the notable battles around Plevna in 1877. To enable readers more fully understand the battles and campaign, Charles Ryan and John Sandes' account is accompanied here by an overview of the battle by William V. Herbert which is supported by illustrations and battle plans. The broader conflict, fought between the Turkish Ottoman Empire and Russia, was motivated in part by aspirations for independent nationhood in the Balkan region, following centuries of Turkish domination, and by the desire of Russia to regain some of the losses she had sustained during the Crimean War some twenty years previously. For all those with an interest in the many small wars in Europe during the 19th century, that created the nation states we know today, this is an essential book in every way. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.
