Book excerpt: For nearly a century, archaeologists and art historians studying the great third abbey at Cluny (Cluny III) have "agreed on a set of abstract principles, including its spontaneous generation or revolutionary character, and posited an overseeing genius who selected from non-local sources." In a sweeping revision of that position, this book argues that Cluny Ill is "the building where regional masons of different traditions first combined their talents to develop a new design," and further maintains that the artisans responsible for the masonry of Cluny Ill also created its sculpture. Professor Armi reaches these conclusions through a painstaking analysis of archaeological evidence, such as masons' marks, and a careful "hand analysis" of the site's sculpture, allowing observation of both individual and general design changes, turning points, and stylistic trends. As a result of his investigation of the major Burgundian structures of the period Cluny, Vézelay, Paray-le-Monial, Anzy-le-Duc, Perrecy-les-Forges, etc., the author has established a new chronology for the architecture of the region. He also has identified the careers of the major artists who carved the portal and capital sculpture. His research has even disproved the traditional assumption that sculpture was carved in situ, for his evidence reveals that finished pieces were fitted into the masonry at Cluny III and elsewhere. By focusing on the work of individual masons and on progressive alterations in architectural detail, the author has broken with the method of his predecessors, but there is ample support for both his methods and his conclusions in the book's 400 illustrations. In his use of macrophotography alone, Armi has added a valuable new methodological tool for the comprehension of both architecture and sculpture, but his most important contribution to the field lies in showing that, by working together, two local groups of masons merged their separate traditions to create a magnificent synthesis: the Cluniac High Romanesque style.

For i2th read nth. CHAPTER XVIII GERMAN ROMANESQUE THE history of Romanesque architecture in Germany begins with Charlemagne. We find no buildings in that country older than his time except those which the ance Romans had left behind them. Charlemagne however was a great builder. Eginhardt his secretary and bio grapher says he repaired the churches throughout his dominions, but he gives no details. A book de aedificiis in the 8th century would have been very interesting, but Eginhardt was no Procopius, nor was Charlemagne a Justinian. Two buildings however, we are modestly told, seem not unworthy of mention, the Mx-ia basilica of the most holy mother of God, constructed with ape e wondrous workmanship at Aquisgranum, and a bridge over the Rhine at Moguntiacum 1 This bridge at Mainz was only of wood, perhaps of boats, but the basilica at AIX-LA-CHAPELLE was a great work considering its age and situation. It was destined by Charlemagne to be also his tomb house, and here he was in fact afterwards buried; seated on his throne, imperially robed, and with his sceptre in his hand and a copy of the gospels on his knee, as he was found when the tomb was opened in 1165. Eginhardt tells us that Charlemagne imported columns and marbles for the work from Ravenna and Rome 2, and he is supposed to have stripped and ruined the splendid palace of Theodoric at the former city which has now practically disappeared. The contemporary wall-paintings and panels from these regions are also illustrated and discussed. A serious attempt has been made to get all this material into order, and the general lines of development have been set out. I & II) these four volumes make available the complete corpus of Edward Garrison's work on medieval Italian painting. The two principal studies are concerned with 'Twelfth-Century Initial Styles of Central Italy' (serialized here in eleven sections) and 'Twelfth-Century Umbro-Roman painting' (serialized in six sections). Most of the non-serialized items are studies of individual manuscripts, but one should note the presence here of Supplements IV-VI to Garrison's Italian Romanesque Panel-painting: an index (Nos. I-III are available in Early Italian Painting: Selected Studies. Vol. I). The reprinting of these four volumes should be particularly welcome to art-historians, since they were originally issued in fascicule form, and many art-historical libraries lack copies.

Hrotsvit of Gandersheim (c.935 - c.975), almost certainly of noble Saxon parentage, was a canoness of the Saxon imperial abbey of Gandersheim, living and working there during its time of greatest material prosperity and cultural and intellectual pre-eminence. Her importance cannot be overestimated: she is the first poet of Saxony; the first known dramatist of Christianity (indeed the first known woman dramatist of any time); and a woman displaying erudition and wit in an essentially patriarchal age, a female author in a literary field dominated by men who insisted on re-evaluating and redrawing the literary depiction of women. Discovered in the late fifteenth century, her extraordinary oeuvre, written in medieval Latin, comprises a wide variety of genres: eight legends, six dramas, and two epics, organised into three books.
