Book Romances of Colonial Days Classic Reprint

Download or read book Romances of Colonial Days Classic Reprint written by Geraldine Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romances of Colonial Days Once a poet with the gold of fact and the alloy of his own fancy fashioned a poem which he called a "Ring." In writing these "Romances of Colonial Days" I have endeavored to keep the poet's "Ring" always in mind, to make them rings of romance in which gold and alloy each has its part. Musty old records, letters, and diaries of men and women long since dead have furnished me my gold; and it is surprising how much of gold, facts still breathing the life, the love, the joys and sorrows of a bygone day, lies hidden in these dry-looking mines of history. In many of the "Romances" the gold has very nearly shaped itself into a ring, requiring little help from the alloy of fancy; not only do the characters of these "Romances" live and love, joy and sorrow according to historic fact, they even speak according to historic fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forelopers: A Romance of Colonial Days The wan shadows of a near-spent twilight filled the valley and lay upon the river, giving to the sur face of its waters the grim' and ghastly hue that is sometimes seen on the face of one Who has at last yielded to the ravages of a long and wasting sickness. More than half an hour before, my new acquaint ance and I, With pipes lighted and our chairs tilted backward against the low porch railing of the iso lated farmhouse there in the mountains, Where we had almost simultaneously sought and secured aecom modations for the night, had seen the sun, showing clean-edged and blood-red through the orange-col ored haze intervening, touch the rim of the horizon, linger for a moment, and then slip from sight, its departing rays illuminating for a few seconds the fringe of trees at the distant turn in the valley down Which the river flowed. Book Imperial Romance

Download or read book Imperial Romance written by Su Yun Kim and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Imperial Romance, Su Yun Kim argues that the idea of colonial intimacy within the Japanese empire of the early twentieth century had a far broader and more popular influence on discourse makers, social leaders, and intellectuals than previously understood. Kim investigates representations of Korean-Japanese intimate and familial relationships—including romance, marriage, and kinship—in literature, media, and cinema, alongside documents that discuss colonial policies during the Japanese protectorate period and colonial rule in Korea (1905–45). Focusing on Korean perspectives, Kim uncovers political meaning in the representation of intimacy and emotion between Koreans and Japanese portrayed in print media and films. Imperial Romance disrupts the conventional reading of colonial-period texts as the result of either coercion or the disavowal of colonialism, thereby expanding our understanding of colonial writing practices. The theme of intermarriage gave elite Korean writers and cultural producers opportunities to question their complicity with imperialism. Their fictions challenged expected colonial boundaries, creating tensions in identity and hierarchy, and also in narratives of the linear developmental trajectory of modernity. Examining a broad range of writings and films from this period, Imperial Romance maps the colonized subjects' fascination with their colonizers and with moments that allowed them to become active participants in and agents of Japanese and global imperialism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Captain Nelson: A Romance of Colonial Days It was a sufficiently plain structure, furnished with a balcony, an exterior staircase, a sun-dial, and a belfry. The ground-floor, only partially enclosed, was reserved for the use of merchants of the town, who met here every day, upon 'change, to buy and sell, discuss the news, or consult the notices affixed to the walls - then the only medium of public advertisement in the colony. It was therefore the business centre of the place. Though so little imposing in appear ance, the Town-house derived addi tional importance from its threefold occupation by the royal governor and council, the colonial judiciary, and the local magistracy. All proclamations were published from the balcony over looking the market-place; all suitors at law, and criminals of every degree, ascending or descending the steps of its' exterior staircase, were confronted by the stocks and pillory, which stood in convenient proximity to the halls of justice. Over the edifice, and symbol izing its relation to the parent govern ment, the standard of England floated in the breeze. Here, therefore, was also the political centre. And in the west a strip of blue sky, which was growing every moment larger and larger, showed that the weather would be clear and bitterly cold. The sun was not far from the horizon, and Lydia, seated by one of the windows, was watching a flock of snow-birds hopping about out side, picking up a handful of crumbs she had thrown them. Presently a gust of wind struck the house, making it tremble so, that she half believed it was going to rise and blowr away.
