Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who has not heard of the mutiny on the Bounty? For two hundred years this event has fired the imagination of millions of people, countless books have been written on it, and five motion pictures—so far—dramitized it on the screen. This book is unique in the literature on the mutiny and is the first companion volume to the story. The first part, the Bounty Chronicle, gives a panoramic, yet detailed, month-by-month account of the events, starting before the Bounty’s departure and ending with Fletcher Christian’s death on Pitcairn Island. It even chronicles Captain Bligh’s second breadfruit expedition of which so many people are unaware. The second part of the book, the Bounty Encyclopedia, is full of all the exciting and fascinating details surrounding this great story.

Book Preserving the Self in the South Seas 1680 1840

Download or read book Preserving the Self in the South Seas 1680 1840 written by Jonathan Lamb and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-06-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The violence, wonder, and nostalgia of voyaging are nowhere more vivid than in the literature of South Seas exploration. Preserving the Self in the South Seas charts the sensibilities of the lonely figures that encountered the new and exotic in terra incognita. Jonathan Lamb introduces us to the writings of South Seas explorers, and finds in them unexpected and poignant tales of selves alarmed and transformed. Lamb contends that European exploration of the South Seas was less confident and mindful than we have assumed. It was, instead, conducted in moods of distraction and infatuation that were hard to make sense of and difficult to narrate, and it prompted reactions among indigenous peoples that were equally passionate and irregular. Preserving the Self in the South Seas also examines these common crises of exploration in the context of a metropolitan audience that eagerly consumed narratives of the Pacific while doubting their truth. Lamb considers why these halting and incredible journals were so popular with the reading public, and suggests that they dramatized anxieties and bafflements rankling at the heart of commercial society.

Book Gabrielle of the Lagoon

Download or read book Gabrielle of the Lagoon written by A. Safroni-Middleton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gabrielle of the Lagoon: A Romance of the South Seas Though it was night and there was no moon, a dim, wierd light lay over the isle and pierced to the depths of the forests. It was in the Solomons, where the dark, picturesque surroundings of palm and reef, the noise of the distant surfs, made a suitable setting for anything unexpected. Even the silver sea-birds had weird, startled-looking eyes down Felisi beach way. And when the wild brown men crept away from the grave-side of one whom they had just buried in the forest, the winds sighed a fitting music across the primeval heights. But there was nothing strange in that; men must die wherever one goes, and it was a common enough occurrence in that heathen land where the ocean boomed on the one side and inland to the south-west stood the mountains, looking like mighty monuments erected in memory of the first dark ages. Across the skies of Bougainville the stars had been marshalled in the millions. It seemed a veritable heathen faeryland as the night echoed a hollow "Tarabab!" But even that heathenish word was only the tribal chief's yell as he stood under the palms conducting the semi-religious tambu ceremony. The tawny maidens and high chiefs, with their feather head-dresses, all in full festival costume, were squatting in front of the secret tambu stage, some mumbling prayer, others beating their hands together as an accompaniment. Book My South Seas Sleeping Beauty

Download or read book My South Seas Sleeping Beauty written by Guixing Zhang and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My South Seas Sleeping Beauty is a captivating coming-of-age tale set in the magical jungles of Borneo. Told through the vivid recollections of a Chinese-Malay youth, the novel recounts the life of Su Qi, a troubled, sensitive son of a wealthy family, and exemplifies the imaginative range of one of Taiwan's most innovative writers. "There were all sorts of stories about how my younger sister died," Su Qi begins, hinting at the power of memory to bend and refract truth. Yet whichever the real story may be, the fact is that the death of Su Qi's sister created an irrevocable rift in Su Qi's family, driving his father into the arms of aboriginal women and his mother into a world of her own invention. In an effort to escape the oppression of home, Su Qi loses himself in the surrounding jungle, full of Communist guerillas and strange tropical fauna. The jungle further blurs the line between fantasy and reality for Su Qi, until he meets Chunxi, the beautiful, frail daughter of his father's best friend. Chunxi is an oasis of kindness and honesty in an otherwise cruel and evasive world, but after a bizarre accident, Chunxi falls into a deep coma, and Su Qui flees to Taiwan. In college Su Qi meets Keyi, a vivacious siren who helps Su Qi forget not only his violent past but also the colorful tales of his youth. When a family member dies, however, Su Qi is pulled back to the jungles of Borneo where he begins to unravel the secrets of his family's past-a story stranger than any fairy tale-and learns that his cherished dream of awakening his beloved Chunxi may be more than just a fantasy. Influenced by the lyricism of William Faulkner and the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, My South Seas Sleeping Beauty is a deeply evocative exploration of sexuality and identity and a masterful reworking of Chinese and Western myth. Valerie Jaffee's careful translation retains all the tone and detail of the original work and provides rare access to a new and exciting generation of Chinese writers born in Southeast Asia.

These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Gabrielle of the Lagoon - A Romance of the South Seas: Look inside the book: He borrowed a shilling from the apprentice, shot a stream of tobacco juice seaward, then entered his hut, but before slamming the door behind him he looked back and said: “I’d git back to me ship if I was you; the Kai-Kai chiefs are on the b——taboo lay round ’ere, and they’d give their ears for that curly mop of yourn!” ... It was haunted by about a dozen nondescript, aged Chinese, Dutch and Japanese seamen who wore pigtails, pointed beards or scraggy whiskers: on the brightest tropic day they succeeded in adding a touch of romance to the shore landscape, for when rum was scarce they leant their ragged backs against the palm stems and looked like old figure-heads from Chinese junks and Spanish galleons stuck up on end, till they spoilt the picture by pulling their tangled beards as they spat seaward. ...Had the young apprentice known that the girl before him had danced on a heathen pae pae (stage) and sang before those cannibalistic tribal warriors the night before, he would most probably have been more fascinated by her presence than ever!

Book Wine Dark Seas and Tropic Skies

Download or read book Wine Dark Seas and Tropic Skies written by A. Safroni-Middleton and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Wine-Dark Seas and Tropic Skies', Arnold Safroni-Middleton offers a mesmerizing account of his travels in the South Seas, where he encountered a cast of characters both native and settler. From his encounters with tattooed potentates to his time among self-exiled white men, Safroni-Middleton paints a vivid picture of a wild, romantic world that has long since faded into history. His reminiscences are a mixture of misanthropy and misplaced humor, with moments of reflection and undercurrents of philosophy.
