Book Romance of Empire South Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book Romance of Empire South Africa Classic Reprint written by Ian D. Colvin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romance of Empire South Africa IF it were not that I owed thanks to several, this little book might go without a preface. To the Editor of the Cape Times, Mr. Maitland Park, I am indebted for permission to use the material first prepared for his columns; to Mr. G. H. Wilson, of the same paper, for the help of his researches. If Mr. Lewis, the Librarian of the Cape Town Public Library, were still alive, it would be pleasant to thank him for learned assistance in happy days gone by: as he is dead I can only add my little tribute to his memory. To the Rev. Mr. Leibbrandt, late Keeper of the Cape Archives, all students of South African history must be grateful, and the Cape Government deserves recognition for the work they have done in the publication of the Archives, work which one may hope will be continued. For the share in this work of Dr. Thea], the late Colonial Historiographer, especially his translation of Portuguese State papers, I am also grateful, though, like Professor Cappon and other predecessors, I must in honesty confess disappointment in his historical writings. Book excerpt: "The Empire Makers" is a novel by James Nisbet, popular for his romance, colonial adventure, and crime. As a writer, Nisbet traveled extensively to British colonies and based his works on real-life experiences. He was a strong proponent of British Imperialism and saw the new lands as the "ultimate civilization of ignorant savages," which needed to be emancipated and enlightened. Being inspired by the work of Cecil Rhodes, the Prime Minister of the Cape Colony who colonized the southern African territory of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe and Zambia), Nisbet wrote this novel. It describes the adventures of three young men who went out to South Africa. The protagonists have different adventures, including troubles with the government, discovering ancient nations, and getting into a local war.

These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Empire Makers - A Romance of Adventure and War in South Africa: Look inside the book: This uncle told him kindly, but frankly, however, in his letter, that if he cared to go anywhere else for the present, it would be as well, for Australia could not hold out much-prospect for a penniless young man for some years yet to come. ...“I have made some arrangements with my own bank, and can let you have a lump sum of say five hundred pounds on your note of hand, only if I do this it will mean drawing your income until you are of age.” ...“Well,” at last observed Clarence, with a lisping drawl; he always spoke slow and lazy-like when primed up for fighting—“well, not being in Johannesburg during the time you speak about, Stephanus Groblaar, I cannot contradict you as to the colour of their flag; yet if I had been, I think I’d have done my best, young as I am, to show that there was an equal mixture of red and blue as well as white about it.”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Empire Makers: A Romance of Adventure and War in South AfricaAfrica is still the home of mystery, in spite of the many explorers who have revealed much of its wonders. This romance is concerned mainly with the adventures of three young men who went out to South Africa, got into trouble with the Transvaal Government, and afterwards discovered an ancient nation in Central Africa. On their return they were able to take a little hand in this present war of Justice and Right, where so many of our best and bravest are shedding their blood.I wish I could have shown my readers the wind up of this vile oligarchy of Pretoria tyrants. Yet I dare say no real Briton can doubt but that the end must be the triumph of our glorious Empire and the ultimate civilization of those ignorant savages, the Boers.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
