Book The Roman World 44 BC AD 180

Download or read book The Roman World 44 BC AD 180 written by Martin Goodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman World 44 BC – AD 180 deals with the transformation of the Mediterranean regions, northern Europe and the Near East by the military autocrats who ruled Rome during this period. The book traces the impact of imperial politics on life in the city of Rome itself and in the rest of the empire, arguing that, despite long periods of apparent peace, this was a society controlled as much by fear of state violence as by consent. Martin Goodman examines the reliance of Roman emperors on a huge military establishment and the threat of force. He analyses the extent to which the empire functioned as a single political, economic and cultural unit and discusses, region by region, how much the various indigenous cultures and societies were affected by Roman rule. The book has a long section devoted to the momentous religious changes in this period, which witnessed the popularity and spread of a series of elective cults and the emergence of rabbinic Judaism and Christianity from the complex world of first-century Judaea. This book provides a critical assessment of the significance of Roman rule for inhabitants of the empire, and introduces readers to many of the main issues currently faced by historians of the early empire. This new edition, incorporating the finds of recent scholarship, includes a fuller narrative history, expanded sections on the history of women and slaves and on cultural life in the city of Rome, many new illustrations, an updated section of bibliographical notes, and other improvements designed to make the volume as useful as possible to students as well as the general reader.

Book The Cavalry of the Roman Republic

Download or read book The Cavalry of the Roman Republic written by Jeremiah B. McCall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-29 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and revealing work, Jeremiah B. McCall challenges the generally accepted view of the Roman cavalry and explores the fundamental connections between war and society in republican Rome, c.300-100 BC. McCall describes the citizen cavalry's equipment, tactics, and motivation in battle, and argues for its effectiveness in the field. This success is proof that it cannot finally have been disbanded for purely military reasons; he shows that victories in the law-courts, and lavish displays of wealth, came to supersede cavalry service as a way of building the reputations of the Roman elite. The clear structure and fresh approach of the book, combining insights from both Roman military and social history, will be useful to readers at all levels of study.

Book Roman Political Life in the First Century B C

Download or read book Roman Political Life in the First Century B C written by Horace White and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Political Life in the First Century, B. C: A Lecture Delivered Before the Harvard Classical Club, April 25, 1900 Ladies and Gentlemen: I shall invite your attention to an episode in ancient history which brings into view the decline and fall of the Roman republic. This is, to my mind, the most instructive chapter in the annals of ancient times, since it shows how a great people became a prey to their own vices and follies, and after conquering the world surrendered their liberty to men whom they had armed to take away the liberty of others. The historian Sallust dates the decline of the republic from the destruction of Carthage, "from which time," he says, "the manners of our forefathers degenerated, not as before, gradually, but with the downward rush of a torrent." Having no longer a rival that she need fear, Rome began to plunder the provinces, not merely by a tribute of fixed amount, but by military governors practically irresponsible, who were chiefly engaged in robbing the provincials and dividing the plunder with those who were able to shield them from punishment. The whole industrial system rested on slavery, which was robbery in a more aggravated form. Three or four hundred men ruled the world in this manner. Their appetites grew with what they fed on, and, since the amount of plunder was not unlimited, they fell to quarreling over it. The quarrels of the nobles gave opportunities to demagogues to rise by espousing the interests of the plebs. Such a condition was sure to produce the gang and the boss in due time.
