Download or read book Roman Life and Manners Vol 3 of 3 written by Ludwig Friedländer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Life and Manners, Vol. 3 of 3: Under the Early Empire In the following investigation an attempt will be made to show that the influence of poetry on education in general in later Roman times was much more comprehensive and far-reaching than in modern days. For this purpose it will be necessary to obtain an idea of the relation of the educated world to poetry, the mission of the latter, the resulting position of poets, and lastly the substitution of artistic prose for poetry, The relation of the educated world to poetry was in great measure determined by the instruction given to youth, the aims and methods of which were entirely different from those of to-day. The aim of the modern instruction of youth is to put him in the way of defining his attitude in regard to the most important branches of human knowledge, to facilitate, as far as possible, his understanding of the manifold works of science, and to render him capable of taking his part in them. On the other hand, in antiquity its task was far simpler, since the branches of learning now taught in schools did not exist at all or only in a rudimentary condition, or were not considered as forming part of a general education. The development of the creative faculties, not increased power of receptivity, was the object in view. Education was not intended to facilitate the acquisition of comprehensive knowledge, but of special excellences; of a perfect mastery of linguistic expression; of the artistic employment of words to set forth ideas in a clear and persuasive manner; of the choice of the most suitable and elegant phraseology. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ludwig Friedlander was a German philologist. Philology is the study of language found in written and historical sources; generally considered a combination of literary criticism, linguistics, and history. Friedlander attended a variety of universities and studied philology in both Berlin and Leipzig. His book series entitled "Roman Life and Manners Under the Early Empire" is a testament to his interest in philology and his skill as an author. Volume four in this series is primarily dedicated to the appendices and notes from the previous volumes. This is a necessary companion book for the reader who already has volumes one through three. This book explores a variety of ideas presented earlier in the series more thoroughly and gives the reader additional evidence to support the author's claims. Utilizing his knowledge of history and his ability to evaluate historical sources, Friedlander builds an in-depth and illuminating series on Roman life and Roman society. This series of books is considered so profound that it has been heralded as one of the best philological productions of the nineteenth century; and so widely enjoyed that it was translated into several languages including French, Spanish, and Italian. Friedlander's deep interest in philology and the Roman Empire is plainly evident in his series "Roman Life and Manners Under the Early Empire." Volume four is a perfect finale to a widely enjoyable and informative body of work. For readers interested in Roman history, this book offers much to consider. For readers intrigued by philology, this book proves that the study of philology is effective when dissecting historic documents.
