Book Roman Law and History in the New Testament

Download or read book Roman Law and History in the New Testament written by Rev. Septimus Buss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Law and History in the New Testament When reading the New Testament one cannot avoid being struck with the prominence of Roman customs throughout. This is, of course, to be expected, as Judaea was at that time under the direct government of Rome, being ruled by governors sent by the Emperor himself. Two events of this character arrest the attention of the least observant reader-the trial of our Lord before Pilate, and St. Paul's appeals to his privileges as a Roman citizen. Other similar incidents speedily claim notice-Augustus's census . of the Empire, the tribute due to Caesar, the conduct of the provincial governors at Philippi and in other cities. And finally, numerous smaller details present themselves, all together combining to show how completely Roman law and custom dominated the very life of the people, in spite of their incongruity with the national character. In the following pages an endeavour has been made to present these facts of Law and History in as concise a form as intelligible language will allow. Book Roman Society and Roman Law in the New Testament

Download or read book Roman Society and Roman Law in the New Testament written by A. N. Sherwin-White and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-06-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally the Sarum Lectures delivered at the University of Oxford in 1960-61, this volume deals with the Hellenistic and Roman setting, and especially the legal, administrative, and municipal background, of the Acts of the Apostles and the synoptic gospels. Sherwin-White -- 'someone from the Roman side,' as he described himself -- brings his knowledge of Roman public law and administration and of city life in the eastern provinces to bear on these aspects of New Testament history. The first three lectures concern the trials of Jesus and of Paul in Jerusalem, addressing questions of the powers of Roman governors and the nature of their jurisdiction. Topics of the remaining lectures include the rights of Roman citizenship, the trial of Paul in Rome, and differences between the Galilean narrative and the Graeco-Roman world of the Acts.

Book The Roman Empire and the New Testament

Download or read book The Roman Empire and the New Testament written by Dr. Warren Carter and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable introduction to Roman society, culture, law, politics, religion, and daily life as they relate to the study of the New Testament. The Roman Empire formed the central context in which the New Testament was written. Anyone who wishes to understand the New Testament texts must become familiar with the political, economic, societal, cultural, and religious aspects of Roman rule. Much of the New Testament deals with enabling its readers to negotiate, in an array of different manners, this pervasive imperial context. This book will help the reader see how social structures and daily practices in the Roman world illumine so much of the content of the New Testament message. For example, to grasp what Paul was saying about food offered to idols one must understand that temples in the Roman world were not “churches,” and that they functioned as political, economic, and gastronomic centers, whose religious dealings were embedded within these other functions.Brief in presentation yet broad in scope, The Roman Empire and the New Testament: An Essential Guide will introduce students to the information and ideas essential to coming to grips with the world in which early Christianity was born.
