Book The Late Roman Gold and Silver Coins from the Hoxne Treasure

Download or read book The Late Roman Gold and Silver Coins from the Hoxne Treasure written by Peter S. W. Guest and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered in 1992, the Hoxne Treasure is perhaps the richest cache of gold and silver coins, jewellery and tableware from the entire Roman world. The core of this volume is the catalogue of the 15,000 late 4th- and early 5th-century gold and silver coins, together with an in-depth discussion of the production and supply of late Roman coinage. Hoxne's silver coins are particularly interesting, and the book also contains ground-breaking discussions of the silver content of Roman currency as well as of the peculiarly British phenomena of coin clipping and copying. The value of the Hoxne Treasure in shedding light on an otherwise dark period of British history also calls for a broader, non-numismatic perspective, and the volume includes an important chapter dealing with the social significance of precious metals in the later Roman empire, particularly their role in the gift-exchange networks that defined and maintained late Roman imperial society.

Book excerpt: This impressive gold sampler of Roman coins is the result of many years of careful selection, with beautiful examples of Aurei and Solidi dating from the late Republic through to the later Roman Empire. It has been put together with a very keen eye for both quality and rarity, as well as a real enthusiasm for the historical background to the individuals represented on the coins. Thus, the building of a magnificent gallery of portraits of emperors and empresses was an important aim. Aside from the high state of preservation of many of the coins, there are a significant number of rare varieties and reverse types included in the gold sampler.

Book Coin Hoards and Hoarding in the Roman World

Download or read book Coin Hoards and Hoarding in the Roman World written by Jerome Mairat and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coin Hoards and Hoarding in the Roman World presents fourteen chapters from an interdisciplinary group of Roman numismatists, historians, and archaeologists, discussing coin hoarding in the Roman Empire from c. 30 BC to AD 400. The book illustrates the range of research themes being addressed by those connected with the Coin Hoards of the Roman Empire Project, which is creating a database of all known Roman coin hoards from Augustus to AD 400. The volume also reflects the range of the Project's collaborations, with chapters on the use of hoard data to address methodological considerations or monetary history, and coverage of hoards from the west, centre, and east of the Roman Empire, essential to assess methodological issues and interpretations in as broad a context as possible. Chapters on methodology and metrology introduce statistical tools for analysing patterns of hoarding, explore the relationships between monetary reforms and hoarding practices, and address the question of value, emphasizing the need to consider the whole range of precious metal artefacts hoarded. Several chapters present regional studies, from Britain to Egypt, conveying the diversity of hoarding practices across the Empire, the differing methodological challenges they face, and the variety of topics they illuminate. The final group of chapters examines the evidence of hoarding for how long coins stayed in circulation, illustrating the importance of hoard evidence as a control on the interpretation of single coin finds, the continued circulation of Republican coins under the Empire, and the end of the small change economy in Northern Gaul.
