Book A Welsh Landscape through Time

Download or read book A Welsh Landscape through Time written by Jane Kenney and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holy Island is a small island just off the west coast of Anglesey, North Wales, which is rich in archaeology of all periods. Between 2006 and 2010, archaeological excavations in advance of a major Welsh Government development site, Parc Cybi, enabled extensive study of the island’s past. Over 20 hectares were investigated, revealing a busy and complex archaeological landscape, which could be seen evolving from the Mesolithic period through to the present day. Major sites discovered include an Early Neolithic timber hall aligned on an adjacent chambered tomb and an Iron Age settlement, the development of which is traced by extensive dating and Bayesian analysis. A Bronze Age ceremonial complex, along with the Neolithic tomb, defined the cultural landscape for subsequent periods. A long cist cemetery of a type common on Anglesey proved, uncommonly, to be late Roman in date, while elusive Early Medieval settlement was indicated by corn dryers. This wealth of new information has revolutionised our understanding of how people have lived in, and transformed, the landscape of Holy Island. Many of the sites are also significant in a broader Welsh context and inform the understanding of similar sites across Britain and Ireland.

Book The Architecture of Wales

Download or read book The Architecture of Wales written by John B. Hilling and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture reflects not only a nation’s history, but also how its people lived, worked, prayed and fought over the centuries. Since the publication of John B. Hilling’s The Historic Architecture of Wales in 1976, there has been no other attempt at addressing the architecture of Wales as a whole, and this revised publication meets a long-felt need for a general survey of architecture in Wales. It covers two thousand years of architectural history, reflecting the nation’s life from Roman times to the present century – less a revision of the original than a complete re-writing, taking into account recent research and recent buildings. The book is illustrated with 268 colour and black-and-white photographs, drawings, plans and maps.

Book The Roman Villa in Britain

Download or read book The Roman Villa in Britain written by A.L.F. Rivet and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman Villa in Britain (1969) is a comprehensive examination of Roman villas in Romano-Britain in a series of essays by six specialists. H.C. Bowen, well-known for his work on early field systems, examines the evidence for the native Celtic agriculture which was practised in pre-Roman Britain and continued to form the basis of the country’s economy after the conquest. The ground plans of the villas, and their implications, are discussed by Sir Ian Richmond, while David Smith considers the mosaic pavements, both as implications of the wealth of their owners and as evidence for the existence of distinct local schools of mosaicists; Joan Liversidge deals with internal decoration and furnishing. A.L.F. Rivet reflects on the social and economic implications of the changing fortunes of the villas, and Graham Webster discusses the future of villa studies from the standpoint of the modern excavator.

Book Fortresses and Treasures of Roman Wales

Download or read book Fortresses and Treasures of Roman Wales written by Sarah Symons and published by Breedon Books Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fortresses and Treasures of Roman Wales details all the fortresses built in Roman Wales during the first century, including all the excavations that have brought these once powerful structures back to life, giving us a wealth of information as to how they functioned and how the soldiers lived. Their foundations have shown us how large they were and where they were placed. We even know what colour some of their internal walls were. And through the discovery of various pottery, we know what utensils the soldiers used for cooking, eating and drinking. We also know how the soldiers spent their leisure hours and what games they played. The soldiers were provided with luxurious bathing facilities even in remote areas, and the remains of these once splendid buildings can still be seen at Caerleon, and Wroxeter (now Shropshire). Two of the great amphitheatres where the soldiers were entertained and held ceremonial parades are also included and can be seen at Caerleon and Chester. The book also tells how little communities sprung up outside the fortresses' walls, with the soldiers trading with the local people and, in some cases, marrying and deciding to retire in the locality.

Book Fortified Settlements in Early Medieval Europe

Download or read book Fortified Settlements in Early Medieval Europe written by Neil Christie and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-three contributions by leading archaeologists from across Europe explore the varied forms, functions and significances of fortified settlements in the 8th to 10th centuries AD. These could be sites of strongly martial nature, upland retreats, monastic enclosures, rural seats, island bases, or urban nuclei. But they were all expressions of control - of states, frontiers, lands, materials, communities - and ones defined by walls, ramparts or enclosing banks. Papers run from Irish cashels to Welsh and Pictish strongholds, Saxon burhs, Viking fortresses, Byzantine castra, Carolingian creations, Venetian barricades, Slavic strongholds, and Bulgarian central places, and coverage extends fully from northwest Europe, to central Europe, the northern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Strongly informed by recent fieldwork and excavations, but drawing also where available on the documentary record, this important collection provides fully up-to-date reviews and analyses of the archaeology of the distinctive settlement forms that characterized Europe in the Early Middle Ages.
