Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flamboyant and passionate, the love poems of Propertius are among the most beautiful to have been written in any language. In this eloquent and consistently faithful translation, W. G. Shepherd does full justice to the work of this remarkable Latin poet. Born about 48 B.C. in Umbria, Sextus Propertius was one of a group of poets influenced by Greek Alexandrian mannerism who developed the genre of Roman love elegy. Through shifting moods of ecstasy and frustration, his early works celebrate his obsessive love for his mistress, Cynthia. All his work is distinguished by strong visual imagery, richness of language, and an intensely personal style.

Book excerpt: 'Delia, when flames engulf my bier you'll weep for me, and then you'll mix your kisses with sad tears.' Tibullus (?55-18 BC) was one of a group of poets known as the Latin elegists, whose number included Ovid and Propertius. Living in the age of Augustus, his poems reflect Augustan ideals, but they are above all notable for their emphasis on the personal, and for their subject-matter, love. Tibullus' elegies are addressed to two different mistresses, Delia and Nemesis, and a boy, Marathus. His pious and idealistic love for Delia is replaced by a more tortured affair with the cruel Nemesis, and the poet's elegies to Marathus give a broader perspective to his treatment of the subject. Anguish and betrayal characterize Tibullus' depiction of love's changing fortunes, in poetry that is passionate, vivid, and sometimes haunting. In this parallel text edition, A. M. Juster's eloquent translations are accompanied by an introduction and notes from Robert Maltby which discuss Tibullus' work in its literary and historical context. Together they demonstrate the achievements of this fine Roman poet. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Book The Complete Elegies of Sextus Propertius

Download or read book The Complete Elegies of Sextus Propertius written by Propertius and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman poet Propertius is best known as the writer who perfected the Latin love elegy, a technical as much as a psychological and cultural feat. Propertius has been admired for both his metrical genius and the modernity of his narrative flow. Many of the poems here pay tribute to Cynthia, Propertius's romantic obsession, but the scope of these 107 elegies is broad. Propertius's poetry offers a fascinating look into life in the Augustan age, addressing social, political, and historical subjects. A contemporary of Virgil and Horace, Propertius has influenced scores of poets--from Ovid to Housman to Pound. His poetry appears here for the first time in a dual-language edition with the translations facing the original Latin. Rendered into English by a poet who is also one of the nation's pre-eminent Propertius experts, the volume brings Propertius's difficult mix of vernacular and high literary allusion into contemporary language. Cynthia was the first. She caught me with her eyes, a fool who had never before been touched by desires. Love cast down my look of constant pride, and he pressed on my head with his feet, until he taught me to despise chaste girls, perversely, and to live without plan. Already, it's been a whole year that the frenzy hasn't stopped, when, for all that, the gods are against me. ?

Book Propertius Elegies Book 4

Download or read book Propertius Elegies Book 4 written by Propertius and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-18 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this edition of Propertius Book IV, Camps follows the general lines of his earlier edition of Book I (Cambridge, 1960). He has presented, without concealing difficulties and uncertainties, a fairly conservative but readable and coherent text, together with such annotation as may help the modern reader of Latin to understand the language and follow the thought of this difficult, much disputed, but very rewarding poet. While the book may be of interest to students and amateurs of Latin in general, the editor has had in mind the particular needs of undergraduates and of sixth forms. The notes are weighted differently from those in Butler and Barber's edition of 1933 and the text of that edition and from the Oxford text of 1960. As far as we know, this is the poet's last work. He has moved away from his earlier preoccupation with the theme of love and the eleven careful elegies that compose the present book are on a variety of subjects. Most are concerned with Roman antiquities. The last is an elaborate and celebrated epitaph on a lady of Roman nobility. But perhaps the poems likely to appeal most to a modern reader are the two in which Propertius recalls and exhibits in a new light, the figure of Cynthia, the declared inspiration of the elegies of Book I.

Book excerpt: German literary prodigy Johann Wolfgang von Goethe breaks ground again with this volume of sensual love poetry. Despite its titillating title, these poems--though shockingly candid in the context of the early 1800s--are tame by contemporary standards, and Goethe couches his carnal odes in coy, oblique metaphors.

Book The Arts of Love

  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 9780521407670
  • Pages : 124 pages

Download or read book The Arts of Love written by Duncan F. Kennedy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five chapters that make up this short book examine the love elegies of the Roman poets Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid from the point of view of the way the meanings attributed to the poems arise out of the interests and preoccupations of the cultural situation in which they are read. Each study is centred around a reading of a poem or poems together with a discussion of a variety of sophisticated theoretical approaches drawn from modern scholars and theorists such as Paul Veyne, Roland Barthes an Michel Foucault. In each case, the modes of analysis involved are pressed hard to see where they may lead, and, equally, where they may show signs of strain. All Latin texts and terms are translated or closely paraphrased.

Book excerpt: This indispensable volume provides a complete course on Latin erotic elegy, allowing students to trace a coherent narrative of the genre's rise and fall, and to understand its relationship to the changes that marked the collapse of the Roman republic, and the founding of the empire. The book begins with a detailed and wide-ranging introduction, looking at major figures, the evolution of the form, and the Roman context, with particular focus on the changing relations between the sexes. The texts that follow range from the earliest manifestations of erotic elegy, in Catullus, through Tibullus, Sulpicia (Rome's only female elegist), Propertius and Ovid. An accessible commentary explores the historical background, issues of language and style, and the relation of each piece to its author's larger body of work. The volume closes with an anthology of critical essays representative of the main trends in scholarship; these both illuminate the genre's most salient features and help the student understand its modern reception.
