Book Iron Age and Roman Coin Hoards in Britain

Download or read book Iron Age and Roman Coin Hoards in Britain written by Roger Bland and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More coin hoards have been recorded from Roman Britain than from any other province of the Empire. This comprehensive and lavishly illustrated volume provides a survey of over 3260 hoards of Iron Age and Roman coins found in England and Wales with a detailed analysis and discussion. Theories of hoarding and deposition and examined, national and regional patterns in the landscape settings of coin hoards presented, together with an analysis of those hoards whose findspots were surveyed and of those hoards found in archaeological excavations. It also includes an unprecedented examination of the containers in which coin hoards were buried and the objects found with them. The patterns of hoarding in Britain from the late 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD are discussed. The volume also provides a survey of Britain in the 3rd century AD, as a peak of over 700 hoards are known from the period from AD 253–296. This has been a particular focus of the project which has been a collaborative research venture between the University of Leicester and the British Museum funded by the AHRC. The aim has been to understand the reasons behind the burial and non-recovery of these finds. A comprehensive online database (https://finds.org.uk/database) underpins the project, which also undertook a comprehensive GIS analysis of all the hoards and field surveys of a sample of them.

Book Ancient and Early Medieval Coins from Cornwall Scilly

Download or read book Ancient and Early Medieval Coins from Cornwall Scilly written by Roger David Penhallurick and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain, unlike Europe, does not have a tradition of publishing regional numismatic corpora to agreed national standards. So far, only the Roman coins from North-West England and Wales have been published in detail. Roger Penhallurick was the late Senior Curator of the Royal Institution of Cornwall. From a Cornish family, returned from Wales, Roger truly 'gathered up the fragments that are left, that nothing be lost', (motto of the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies). He worked on his coin corpus for many years and completed it in 2000 before his untimely death in 2004. The corpus is a true testament to his enthusiasm, commitment and awareness of the importance of coin finds to the archaeology and history of Cornwall. The work of reorganising the manuscript was undertaken by Dr. Nick Wells of Cardiff University. This task proved to be rather more complicated than initially envisaged though the Editors feel that the end result is worth the effort.

Book excerpt: Studies on finds in Roman Britain and the Western Provinces have come to greater prominence in the literature of recent years. The quality of such work has also improved, and is now theoretically informed, and based on rich data-sets. Work on finds over the last decade or two has changed our understanding of the Roman era in profound ways, and yet despite such encouraging advances and such clear worth, there has to date, been little in the way of a dedicated forum for the presentation and evaluation of current approaches to the study of material culture. The conference at which these papers were initially presented has gone some way to redressing this, and these papers bring the very latest studies on Roman finds to a wider audience. Twenty papers are here presented covering various themes.

Book Mining Metallurgy and Minting in the Middle Ages Asiatic supremacy 425 1125

Download or read book Mining Metallurgy and Minting in the Middle Ages Asiatic supremacy 425 1125 written by Ian Blanchard and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2001 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of four volumes, which examine non-ferrous precious and base metal mining, metallurgy and minting in the Middle Ages, encompasses the history of these activities during the years 425-1125. It describes the shift in the focus of world precious metal production from the Western Roman Empire -350), to the Sassanid and Byzantine Empires (350-650) and Central Asia (480-930). Central Asia dominated for almost half a millennium world precious and base metal production, before output collapsed and an industrial diaspora caused the foci of silver and gold production to shift to Europe and sub-Saharan Africa respectively (930-1125). Mining activity in Central Asia, 480-930 is examined in depth, as is also its impact on local society and the distribution of precious metals from there to China, India and South-east Asia, Asia Minor and, via the Trans-Pontine steppes, to Europe. It also explores the impact of this flow of Sassanid-Islamic silver and gold on European mining and monetary systems, when that trade was at its height (560-930) and the response of the Europeans to the great oSilver Famineo occasioned by the collapse of Central Asian production (930-1125). " es gibt nun eine neue Publikation, die alles zusammenfasst, was wir derzeit uber die Grundlagen der mittelalterlichen Munzpragung wissen, uber die Metallerzeugung und die Pragung.
