Book A Popular History of the Catholic Church in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Popular History of the Catholic Church in the United States Classic Reprint written by John O'Kane Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of the Catholic Church in the United States IT is seldom, indeed, that the American Catholic author of a strictly Catholic book, has the gratification of adding a few words to the fourth edition of his fist book within a few months after its first issue. Yet, scarcely six months have passed since the first copy of the present volume was given to the public. The earliest edition was so quickly disposed of, that I had but little time to make a hasty re vision, when another was called for. Soon a third edition was demanded, and, now, a fourth. I feel that I am deeply indebted to the kindness and generous appreciation of our Catholic public. To express fully my warm gratitude, I am at a loss for fitting terms. Were my volume a novel, or a romance, I would not be so astonished at its success; but it is a book of dates, facts, and figures, a book in which imagination had little room for play, a book, in fine, standing on the solid ground of truth. But, after all, perhaps, truth is stranger than fiction. Nor are my thanks less due to the American, Canadian, and British press, for the friendly expressions of welcome, the manly, courteous reception accorded to my first literary venture in the book-world. But I thank, above all, those learned and venerable Rulers of the Church whose valued, weighty, and beauti ful words of encouragement, I'can never forget. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church and the Public Schools The address upon The Roman Catholic Church and the School Question, which has the first place in the following pages, was delivered in connection with the now somewhat famous text-book controversy in Boston in the autumn of 1888, and was published at that time in pamphlet form. The address upon the question, Has the Parochial School Proper Place in America? Was given before the National Educational Association, at Nashville, in July last. The writer declined the invitations for its publication at the time, as it was his desire to expand and strengthen that portion of the address devoted to the subject of moral training in the public schools. The leisure for this revision has never come, and the address is given here almost untouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Roman Catholicism IT used to be the proud boast of the Church of Rome that She was Semper ead'em, always the same. Kingdoms rose and fell, but she remained unshaken. The opinions of men were ever changing, but the doctrines of the Church of Rome remained unaltered throughout all the vicissitudes of human thought, the one thing to which men could cling with the unwavering confidence that it would never fail them. And this was the favourite line of defence taken by Romanist controversialists. Like Bossuet, they delighted to dwell on the variations of the Protestant Churches, and to contrast with these the constant, unfluctuating character of the creed of Rome. Download or read book Roman Catholicism Scripturally Considered Classic Reprint written by Charles P. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Catholicism Scripturally Considered The doctrines in controversy between Protestants and Roman Catholics involve the truth, of Cod and the salvation of souls. They also involve the progress and well-being of society, as they affect civil and religious liberty. They merit, therefore, at our hands, an earnest, searching, thorough investigation. If the Church of Rome hold, as she affirms, the only true doctrine, and if out of her pale there is no salvation, it behooves every one to know it. If, however, she is in error, has "fallen away," is the Great Apostasy, so clearly revealed and graphically described in prophecy, it is equally important that all should know it. It must be clear to every mind, and is, perhaps, admitted by all, that there must be some rule, some infallible standard, to which all questions in dispute may be appealed for final adjudication. The Bible is that standard. Tradition is uncertain, fallible; contradicts God's Word and itself. To the Bible, therefore, we come with all the questions at issue, and in its clear, heavenly, infallible light examine them, and in its holy, unerring balance weigh them.
