Book The Column of Antoninus Pius

Download or read book The Column of Antoninus Pius written by Lise Vogel and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after the death in 161 of Antoninus Pius, his sons dedicated a column to him as a funerary monument. The form of the column in general and the reliefs on the pedestal in particular raise problems central to the understanding of Roman art. In this first thorough study, illustrated with nearly 100 photographs, Lise Vogel restores the column to its rightful place as one of the major monuments of Roman art. In addition, she re-evaluates the meaning of the column of Antoninus Pius in the context of the development of second century Roman imperial sculpture.

Book The Seven Cities of the Apocalypse and Roman Culture

Download or read book The Seven Cities of the Apocalypse and Roman Culture written by Roland H. Worth and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “To understand the immediate cultural and societal background of the cities to which John wrote in Revelation 1 and 2, we must first understand the broader background of Roman civilization and its impact upon Asian province,” writes Roland H. Worth in the introduction to this fascinating, information-packed work. It is an in-depth study of the history, culture, society, economics, and environment of early Christians living in Roman Asia. Drawing on a multitude of resources from diverse disciplines, Worth surveys Roman life and attitudes in general, and demonstrates how Roman power developed and was exercised in Asia. He describes life in Roman Asia: what it was like to live in that province, how the imperial cult grew and prospered there, as well as the nature of official governmental persecution in the first century. A second book, The Seven Cities of the Apocalypse and Greco-Asian Culture, will fill in the details of the local background of the Christians for whom the “mini-epistles” in the book of Revelation were written.

Book Ancient Greece and Rome

    Book Details:
  • Author : Keith Hopwood
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN : 9780719024016
  • Pages : 472 pages

Download or read book Ancient Greece and Rome written by Keith Hopwood and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Thomas Fairfax, not Oliver Cromwell, was creator and commander of Parliament's New Model Army from 1645 to1650. Although Fairfax emerged as England's most successful commander of the 1640s, this book challenges the orthodoxy that he was purely a military figure, showing how he was not apolitical or disinterested in politics. The book combines narrative and thematic approaches to explore the wider issues of popular allegiance, puritan religion, concepts of honour, image, reputation, memory, gender, literature, and Fairfax's relationship with Cromwell. 'Black Tom' delivers a groundbreaking examination of the transformative experience of the English revolution from the viewpoint of one of its leading, yet most neglected, participants. It is the first modern academic study of Fairfax, making it essential reading for university students as well as historians of the seventeenth century. Its accessible style will appeal to a wider audience of those interested in the civil wars and interregnum more generally.

Book Imperial Women

Download or read book Imperial Women written by S.E. Wood and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the end of the Roman Republic to the death of the last Julio-Claudian emperor, portraits of women - on coins, public monuments, and private luxury objects - became an increasingly familiar sight throughout the empire. These women usually represented the distinguished bloodlines of the head of the state, or his hopes for succession, but in every case, their images were freighted with political significance. These objects also communicated social messages about the appropriate roles, behavior, and self-presentation of women. This volume traces the emergence and development of the public female portrait, from Octavia, the first Roman woman to be represented in propria persona on coinage, to the formidable and ambitious Agrippina the Younger, whose assassination demonstrated to later women the limits of official power they could demand.

Book Old Age in Greek and Roman Art

Download or read book Old Age in Greek and Roman Art written by Susan B. Matheson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive look at ancient sculptures, wall paintings, vases, and more depicting the elderly in Greek and Roman society Some of the most vivid portraits in ancient art depict older members of society. In marble and bronze sculptures, on coins and painted vases, and in wall paintings and mosaics, elderly men and women are shown with the telltale signs of old age: wrinkles, white hair, sagging jowls, and stooped postures. This publication examines more than 300 of these vivid images to reveal perceptions--both positive and negative--about aging and the aged in Greek and Roman society. Seven chapters explore medium and form--including Greek grave reliefs, marble grave monuments in Roman Africa, and Roman sarcophagi--as well as subjects, from priests and priestesses to ancient kings of Athens, old gods, and satyrs. Grounded in the analysis of art, contemporary literature, and the archaeological record, this comprehensive volume is the first in English to explore how old age was presented in art from antiquity. Distributed for the Yale University Art Gallery

Book Imperial Cults and the Apocalypse of John

Download or read book Imperial Cults and the Apocalypse of John written by Steven J. Friesen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-10-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than a century of debate about the significance of imperial cults for the interpretation of Revelation, this is the first study to examine both the archaeological evidence and the Biblical text in depth. Friesen argues that a detailed analysis of imperial cults as they were practiced in the first century CE in the region where John was active allows us to understand John's criticism of his society's dominant values. He demonstrates the importance of imperial cults for society at the time when Revelation was written, and shows the ways in which John refuted imperial cosmology through his use of vision, myth, and eschatological expectation.

Book Twice Neokoros

    Book Details:
  • Author : Friesen
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2015-09-01
  • ISBN : 9004283447
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Twice Neokoros written by Friesen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twice Neokoros is a case study of the Cult of the Sebastoi that was established in the city of Ephesus by the province of Asia during the late first century C.E. Epigraphic and numismatic data indicate that the Cult of the Sebastoi was dedicated in 89/90 to the Flavian imperial family. The architecture, sculpture, municipal titles, and urban setting of the cult all reflect Asian religious traditions. The image of Ephesus was significantly altered by the use of these traditions in the institutions related to the Cult of the Sebastoi. Within the context of the history of provincial cults in the Roman Empire, the Cult of the Sebastoi became a turning point in the rhetoric of social order. Thus, the Cult of the Sebastoi served as a prototypical manifestation of socio-religious developments during the late first and early second century in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of women in the church is more hotly debated today than ever. Now in its third edition, this classic exposition of 1 Timothy 2:9–15 includes contributions by Thomas Schreiner, Andreas Köstenberger, Robert Yarbrough, Rosaria Butterfield, and others, walking readers through the biblical text with careful exegesis, sound reasoning, and a keen awareness of the implications for men and women in the church. Academically rigorous yet pastorally sensitive, this book offers Christians a helpful overview of Paul’s teaching related to how men and women are to relate to one another when it comes to authoritative teaching in the local church. Includes a new preface, a new conclusion, four updated chapters, and two all-new chapters.
