Book excerpt: Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza charts a new and provocative course in the interpretation of the book of Revelation. She recognizes not only the ideological distortions but also the sociopolitical location of the Apocalypse. In this way she opens to the reader the world of vision of this powerful New Testament book. This book has three major sections: (1) an introduction that centers on social location and rhetorical analysis; (2) the commentary; and (3) a theo- ethical rhetorical reading of the visionary world of the book of Revelation under the headings of empire, tribulation, resistance, and competing voices.

This book was released on 2021-06-28 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BULLDOGDOM BY A. G. STURGEON A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally published in 1920, this extremely rare early work on the Bulldog is both very expensive and very hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author was a highly respected breeder of the day. The book's 188 pages cover all aspects of the Bulldog. Beginning with the history of the breed, it moves on to discuss buying, breeding, feeding and showing amongst many other topics. The book is illustrated throughout with the lovely line drawings of R. WARD BINKS, and contains a double-page spread of an original pedigree document. There is a "Standard description of the correct appearance and the several points in detail of a perfect Bulldog" The final chapter features over 40 photographs of champion Bulldogs of the day, a full descriptive write-up of each dog and their pedigrees. Also included in the text are a number of period adverts for dog products featuring Bulldogs. This is a fascinating read for any Bulldog enthusiast or historian of the breed but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are reprinting these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork
Download or read book Ablution Initiation and Baptism written by David Hellholm and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 2089 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the web of cultural processes of late antiquity ablution rites and initiation rites were performed in different forms and in different contexts. Such rites existed in Early Judaism and Greco-Roman cults and were also applied in early Christianity under the label “baptism”, however, not as one fixed rite uniformly performed and interpreted. Baptismal rites developed diversely corresponding to the diversity among Christian groups of which some later came to be perceived as heretical. Remains of art, architecture and texts from these contexts were discussed in two conferences gathering scholars who are excellent within their respective fields: text studies, studies of rites, archaeology, architecture, history of art, and cultural anthropology. These different fields of research have in recent years generated new knowledge that is relevant for the discussion of ablution and initiation rites and their function in late antiquity. At the same time interests of research have altered in favour of a growing cooperation across discipline borders. The present volumes are the outcome of two conferences in Rome 2008 and at Metochi (Lesbos) 2009.
