Book Fascist Virilities

Download or read book Fascist Virilities written by Barbara Spackman and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascist Virilities exposes the relation between rhetoric and ideology. Barbara Spackman looks at Italian fascism as a matter of discourse, with "virility" as the master code that articulates and melds its disparate elements. In her analysis, rhetoric binds together the elements of ideology, with "virility" as the key. To reveal how this works, Spackman traces the circulation of "virility" in the discourse of the Italian regime and in the rhetorical practices of Mussolini himself. She tracks the appearance of virility in two of the sources of fascist rhetoric, Gabriele D'Annunzio and F.T. Marinetti, in the writings of the futurist Valentine de Saint Point and the fascist feminist Teresa Labriola, and in the speeches of Mussolini. A critical and timely contribution to the current reappraisal of fascist ideology, this book will interest anyone concerned with the relations between gender, sexuality, and fascist discourse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arms of Quirinus spins the tale of young Romulus, Rome's first king, who took the rulership and built Mars' own city, calling his people Romans after his own name and fostering the nation that wore the toga. This fresh retelling of a classic story brings to life immortal Rome's pastoral beginnings as a craggy, wooded hilltop beside an ancient river crossing and weaves a tale that might have been told by the very people who lived the incredible adventure that fostered the nation destined to extend its rule over the earth. The author's Seven Kings of Rome Novels will appeal to readers with inquiring minds who have a love of history and a fascination for the cultural roots of civilization, as well as to readers looking simply for an entertaining junket in the form of a novel that can bring to vivid life another time, another place. "The Arms of Quirinus would be a respectable work on any shelf with The Bull from the Sea or Whom the Gods Would Destroy. What Mary Renault, Robert Graves, and others did so skillfully, Goff is emulating in her own distinct way in her Seven Kings novels." - William Howard Denson III (Writers Festival)

Book excerpt: Book one of the King of Ys series: Blending fantasy, history, and adventure, the epic story of Ys begins as the Roman Gratillonius finds himself thrust into the highest seat of power In the waning days of the Roman Empire, Magnus Maximus sends his prefect Gratillonius to western Gaul and the faraway land of Ys, a place shrouded in legend and ruled by a cruel and tyrannical king. When the sovereign challenges Gratillonius to a duel, the envoy from Rome emerges victorious and claims the throne as the new king of Ys, inheriting a land whose religion, culture, and history are entirely foreign. He also gains the former king’s nine wives, the Gallicenae, a powerful group of women to whom he must appear equally devoted despite his growing feelings for one in particular. As he adjusts to his new role as ruler of Ys, Gratillonius must fight to keep his strange new country on its feet while the rest of the Roman Empire begins to crumble around him. Roma Mater is the first book in Poul and Karen Anderson’s King of Ys series, which continues with Gallicenae.

Book The Reason in a Storm

Download or read book The Reason in a Storm written by Geoffrey Bernard Williams and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1991 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that T.S. Eliot, working in the romantic tradition, deliberately uses ambiguity in language to manifest the realm of ultimate reality. He maintains this technique first to create moments of unmediated experience in his early poetry and, in his later poetry, to express the transcendent in time. No other study has explicitly dealt with Eliot's use of ambiguity and its significance in relating Eliot to romanticism and postmodern practices of deconstruction. In this study, Eliot is shown to be a significant link, overlooked until now, between tradition and the contemporary fracturing of tradition.
