Download or read book The Gershwin Style written by Wayne Joseph Schneider and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of America's most popular yet least appreciated composers, Gershwin is revered for his wonderful pop songs, a few instrumental works, and the opera Porgy and Bess. But most of his music is virtually unknown; hundreds of compositions, show tunes, and even several large and important instrumental works are gradually fading with the generations that first heard them. This outstanding new book collects the work of several authorities on Gershwin and/or American music generally, among them Wayne Shirley, Charles Hamm, Edward Jablonski, and Artis Wodehouse (who has transcribed most of Gershwin's piano performances).

His autobiographical book, The Flying Piano Roll Man, recounts his experiences mostly as a piano roll maker, a pilot, and an inventor. The Flying Piano Roll Man divides the author’s life into four time spans: 1917–1930, 1931–1940, 1941–1945, and 1946 – to the present time. In three different chapters, the author also highlights his piano-roll years, his flying years, and his invention ideas. In detailed description, this volume narrates the author’s experience with his first piano teacher, his first job, and other work experiences that molded him into the person he is today. A person who wears multiple hats, the author has composed music, written songs, written lyrics for songs, made the master arrangements for piano rolls, done artwork when he was young, written articles for magazines, had a photo business, had a leather craft business, had a nail head business for clothing, was a clothing cutter in the garment line, learned flying and became a land-sea-glider pilot with a commercial rating, tunes pianos every day, rehearses shows and conducts them, played with many bands and in many restaurants, and so much more. These interesting facts will engross readers in this book. As an added incentive to buy this book, there are many original musical compositions that were done by Hi Babit, which are located at the end of the book in the Appendix.

  • Author : Brian Dolan
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield Publishers

Download or read book Inventing Entertainment written by Brian Dolan and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-16 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian Dolan's social and cultural history of the music business in relation to the history of the player piano is a critical chapter in the story of contemporary life. The player piano made the American music industry-and American music itself-modern. For years, Tin Pan Alley composers and performers labored over scores for quick ditties destined for the vaudeville circuit or librettos destined for the Broadway stage. But, the introduction of the player piano in the early 1900s, transformed Tin Pan Alley's guild of composers, performers, and theater owners into a music industry. The player piano, with its perforated music rolls that told the pianos what key to strike, changed musical performance because it made a musical piece standard, repeatable, and easy rather than something laboriously learned. It also created a national audience because the music that was played in New Orleans or Kansas City could also be played in New York or Missoula, as new music (ragtime) and dance (fox-trot) styles crisscrossed the continent along with the player piano's music rolls. By the 1920s, only automobile sales exceeded the amount generated by player pianos and their music rolls. Consigned today to the realm of collectors and technological arcane, the player piano was a moving force in American music and American life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 Association for Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence—Best History in the category of Best Historical Research in Recorded Jazz Adrian Rollini (1903–1956), an American jazz multi-instrumentalist, played the bass saxophone, piano, vibraphone, and an array of other instruments. He even introduced some, such as the harmonica-like cuesnophone, called Goofus, never before wielded in jazz. Adrian Rollini: The Life and Music of a Jazz Rambler draws on oral history, countless vintage articles, and family archives to trace Rollini’s life, from his family’s arrival in the US to his development and career as a musician and to his retirement and death. A child prodigy, Rollini was playing the piano in public at the age of five. At sixteen in New York he was recording pianola rolls when his peers recognized his talent and asked him to play xylophone and piano in a new band, the California Ramblers. When he decided to play a relatively new instrument, the bass saxophone, the Ramblers made their mark on jazz forever. Rollini became the man who gave this instrument its place. Yet he did not limit himself to playing bass parts—he became the California Ramblers’ major soloist and created the studio and public sound of the band. In 1927 Rollini led a new band that included such jazz greats as Bix Beiderbecke and Frank Trumbauer. During the Depression years, he was back in New York playing with several bands including his own New California Ramblers. In the 1940s, Rollini purchased a property on Key Largo. He rarely performed again for the public but hosted rollicking jam sessions at his fishing lodge with some of the best nationally known and local players. After a car wreck and an unfortunate hospitalization, Rollini passed away at age fifty-three.
