Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of legislative politics often note the many differences between the British House of Commons and the United States House of Representatives. These include differences in party strength, members' partisan loyalty on votes, and general institutional structure. Because of these differences, scholars have rarely compared these chambers directly. This Element aims to do precisely that. The authors point out the many similar motivations of members in both chambers, and leverage these similar motivations to theorize that member ideology, as well as how party agenda interact to produce party disloyalty. Using data on legislative voting following changes in agenda control, the authors demonstrate that ideological extremists in both the US and UK use party disloyalty to connect with ideologically extreme constituents. The similarities in patterns across these chambers suggest that legislative scholars have much to gain by considering the commonalities across American and British politics, and in general, by thinking more frequently about US legislative politics in a comparative context.

Book Congressional Travels

Download or read book Congressional Travels written by Richard Fenno and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A follow up book to his classic Home Style: House Members in their Districts, this new book by the preeminent legislative studies scholar, Dick Fenno, is intended for use in courses on Congress, political campaigning, and American government. Written in Fenno’s “homespun” story-telling style, this book argues that authenticity — knowing what a representative is like in his/her district and looking beyond mere roll call voting — contributes significantly to understanding the full body of work done by our members of Congress. It further posits, by recounting Fenno’s actual life’s work, that the best way to gain a sense of authenticity is to do what Fenno is most famous for — i.e., making multiple trips and spending a great deal of time observing representatives at home, with their constituents, in their districts. The book is an engaging, quietly provocative, and unique title that offers an alternative to what some consider the increasingly specialized and technical nature of political science

Book The History of the Rebel Yell

Download or read book The History of the Rebel Yell written by Terryl W. Elliott and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Elliott's book is great!" -S. Waite Rawls III, president and CEO, Museum of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia ". . . a well-written book that should appeal to all history and Civil War buffs." -Frank Haight, Independence (MO) Examiner The South's renowned Rebel Yell and its unique, demoralizing effects have been documented throughout history. Whether as a planned part of a battle strategy or as an instinctual expression of adrenaline, the yell motivated the rebel soldiers and unnerved the enemy. In this definitive work, the mighty hollers of these warriors as they met their foes in battle are detailed as are their origins and nature. This work sets out to recapture the yell, which has been largely lost to time, and bring it back to life at full volume. The text suggests a substantial theory of the origins of the yell in Scotch-Irish history and analyzes its many variations and historical descriptions. Also assessed in these chapters are the few recorded versions of the Rebel Yell. This work includes historic stories and poems featuring the yell before concluding with a list of references.

Book Legislative Hardball

Download or read book Legislative Hardball written by Matthew Green and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assertive bargaining occurs from time to time in the US Congress. It became an important feature of legislative negotiations within the House Republican Party when, following the 2014 elections, a group of organized conservatives called the House Freedom Caucus regularly issued threats against its own party's leadership. Such behavior by an ideologically extreme bloc of lawmakers is not accounted for by existing theories of legislative politics. This Element posits explanations for why such threat-making might occur and what might increase its likelihood of success, then tests those explanations using the Freedom Caucus as a case study.

Book excerpt: Born the eighth child in a wealthy Mississippi plantation family in 1843, David Eldred Holt joined Company K of the 16th Mississippi Regiment in 1861 and served in the Eastern theater throughout the Civil War. Late in his life, at a time when many former soldiers, both Union and Confederate, were reliving their memories of that event, Holt penned this memoir, recounting the idyllic life of an affluent southern boy before the war and the exhilarating, sometimes humorous, often terrifying experiences of a common soldier in camp and in battle. This new edition has been expanded to include Holt's never-before-published diary entries from the last year of the war.
