Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Boserup's contribution to our thinking on women's role in development cannot be underestimated. Her keen observations, her use of empirical data and her commitment to greater gender equality are still an inspiration to students, researchers and activists who are interested in a better and more equal world.' From the new Introduction by Nazneen Kanji, Su Fei Tan and Camilla Toulmin 'Women's Role in Economic Development has become a key reference book for anyone - student, scholar, or practitioner - interested in gender and development analyses. This book is important not only because it provided the intellectual underpinning of the Women in Development (WID) analysis, but also because of the lasting influence it had on the development of theoretical, conceptual, and policy thinking in the fields of women, gender, and development. The re-editing of Women's Role in Economic Development, with its new introduction, ensures students, academics, and practitioners continued access to an essential reference for those interested in the women and development literature.' - Gender and Development This classic text by Ester Boserup was the first investigation ever undertaken into what happens to women in the process of economic and social growth throughout the developing world, thereby serving as an international benchmark. In the context of the ongoing struggle for women's rights, massive urbanization and international efforts to reduce poverty, this book continues to be a vital text for economists, sociologists, development workers, activists and all those who take an active interest in women's social and economic circumstances and problems throughout the world. A substantial new Introduction by Nazneen Kanji, Su Fei Tan and Camilla Toulmin reflects on Boserup's legacy as a scholar and activist, and the continuing relevance of her work. This highlights the key issue of how the role of women in economic development has or has not changed over the past four decades in developing countries, and covers crucial current topics including: women and inequality, international and national migration, conflict, HIV and AIDS, markets and employment, urbanization, leadership, property rights, global processes, including the Millennium Development Goals, and barriers to change.

Book Gender and National Development

Download or read book Gender and National Development written by Nkem Fab-Ukozor and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves to shed a light on the position of women in media and how these institutions shape the women’s contributions to national development. The authors argue that women are unsung heroes, driving the growth of nations. Nevertheless, their stories are seldom told, they are often stereotyped and marginalized within society. This form of discrimination serves to take away the voices of women in all social stratas, especially in the developing nations of Africa. It is little wonder that there is gender inequality, gender bias, and gender injustice in society. This book highlights literature which may be used to actualize gender equality and social justice for women. By creating a discussion around gender, society will begin to understand the value and importance of women in engineering development. Women are vital to social change.

Book Girls Education in the Twenty first Century

Download or read book Girls Education in the Twenty first Century written by Mercy Tembon and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persuasive evidence demonstrates that gender equality in education is central to economic development. Despite more than two decades of accumulated knowledge and evidence of what works in improving gender equality, progress on the ground remains slow and uneven across countries. What is missing? Given that education is a critical path to accelerate progress toward gender equality and the empowerment of women, what is holding us back? These questions were discussed at the global symposium Education: A Critical Path to Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, which was sponsored by the World Bank in October 2007. Girls' Education in the 21st Century is based on background papers developed for the symposium. The book's chapters reflect the current state of knowledge on education from a gender perspective and highlight the importance of, and challenges to, female education, as well as the interdependence of education and development objectives. The last chapter presents five strategic directions for advancing gender equality in education and their implications for World Bank operations. Girls' Education in the 21st Century will be of particular interest to researchers, educators, school administrators, and policy makers at the global, national, regional, and municipal levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade can dramatically improve women’s lives, creating new jobs, enhancing consumer choices, and increasing women’s bargaining power in society. It can also lead to job losses and a concentration of work in low-skilled employment. Given the complexity and specificity of the relationship between trade and gender, it is essential to assess the potential impact of trade policy on both women and men and to develop appropriate, evidence-based policies to ensure that trade helps to enhance opportunities for all. Research on gender equality and trade has been constrained by limited data and a lack of understanding of the connections among the economic roles that women play as workers, consumers, and decision makers. Building on new analyses and new sex-disaggregated data, Women and Trade: The Role of Trade in Promoting Gender Equality aims to advance the understanding of the relationship between trade and gender equality and to identify a series of opportunities through which trade can improve the lives of women.

Book Women Education and Development in Asia

Download or read book Women Education and Development in Asia written by Grace C.L. Mak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of twelve original essays examines the interplay between women's education and development, and if and how it has changed women's status, in selected nations in Asia. Educational expansion in recent decades have benefitted women in Asia at least in quantitative terms. Industrialization has also created room for increased waged employment for them. However, the relative openness of these systems has not been paralleled at the cultural level. Women in Asia, which remains largely patriarchal, are thus caught in contradictions. This volume examines how women use and compromise with opportunities and limits in education, the role of education in their economic participation, and the enhancement and tension brought to their family roles. The volume is edited from a cross-national perspective. The chapters, each covering a nation, rest on a common framework. Each begins with a brief historical account of education fore women. It then investigates the extent women have been able to take advantage of them. What follows is an analysis of how women use their education in the labor market and in the family. Society's definition of women's roles in the family often acts to reduce the effect of schooling on women's economic participation. This interplay is further complicated by such factors as social class and/or caste, religion and ethnicity.
