Book The Politics of Labour and Development in Trinidad

Download or read book The Politics of Labour and Development in Trinidad written by Ray Kiely and published by University of the West Indies Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a labour history of Trinidad and Tobago, concentrating on the period from 1937 to 1990. The study attempts to show that there is not a unified or homogenous working class, and for this reason both traditional Marxist and industrial relations theories are rejected. Instead, the history of labour focuses on how the working classes have been divided by factors such as race, gender, class structure and politics. These divisions are used as an explanation for the absence of a popular socialist party in the country. It concludes that the economic recession of the 1980s has led to the worst crisis in the history of the labour movement, but at the same time, this has laid the framework for a new strategy of social movement unionism, which attempts to constructively engage with, rather than ignore, divisions within the working classes. The main sources of data were documentary and archival material, and in particular, reports made by the British TUC and Colonial Office, industrial relations legislation, and trade union and political party documents and manifestoes. For the contemporary period, these sources of data were supplemented by fifteen interviews with leading figures in trade union and labour politics. The work is based on a macro approach to the study of labour, and as such constitutes a new and original approach to the study of labour in Trinidad and Tobago. In addition, more contemporary trade union documents and interviews provided the researcher with new and original material.

Book Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana

Download or read book Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana written by Ann Marie Bissessar and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book an attempt is made to probe more carefully the processes by which social and ethnic problems, as these pertain to Caribbean countries, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, are conveyed to the political arena and the mechanisms by which they determine critical outcomes. The authors of this book have accordingly distinguished between predisposing factors and what are described as triggering mechanisms. The factors that trigger dramatic changes will differ between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. In short, while in some respects these societies are similar, in others, there are dramatic differences in their respective histories and political developments. This study begins with a survey of the literature on race relations and their connections with politics; it then proceeds to examine the context for the insertion of the two major groups into these societies, the emergence of ethnic groups, and their relationships with political organizations. The nature and politics of the leaders are then analyzed along with the political structures with a view to identifying what factors were responsible for the differing political experiences of both countries.

Book Emergence of the Caribbean Empire

Download or read book Emergence of the Caribbean Empire written by Jerome Teelucksingh and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is an analysis of the involvement and impact of Trinidad and Tobago 's first major labour organisation, the Trinidad Workingmen's Association (TWA), and early trade unions in politics. Furthermore, the author focuses on the role of unions in the evolution of working class consciousness from its rudimentary stages to the subsequent rise of organized trade unionism of the post-1937 era. Consideration is given to the seminal role of the early trade unions as mobiliser and organiser of the working class both for participation in electoral politics, and as a catalyst for ethnic cohesion in the post-World War One era to 1976. One of the major conclusions in the study is that the early working class organizations and emergence of ideologically strong trade unionism and ad hoc groups as the electioneering campaign committees were the precursors of the well-organized political machinery of the post-World War Two era. The author provides evidence that the comprehensive organisational skills of Labour in organizing meetings, selecting candidates, campaigning for votes and debating issues on the electoral platform were determining factors which resulted in creditable performances in limited electoral victories in elections during 1925 to 1976"--

Book Race and Class Struggles in a Colonial State

Download or read book Race and Class Struggles in a Colonial State written by Kelvin Singh and published by Calgary : University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political, social and economic evolution of pre-independent Trinidad was shaped by constant shifts in British colonial policy between the two World Wars. Singh reveals the subtleties and complexities of day-to-day life in a truly multi-racial society where the whites, the blacks, and the East Indians were not the only ethnics involved in the political, social and economic dynamics of colonial Trinidad on the eve of internal self-government and ultimately its independence in 1962. Singh examines the relationships between capital and labour, racial groups and classes, the policies of the imperial and local government, the rise of protest against (and accommodation to) those policies and prejudices by individuals, fledgling trade unions and political groups in this book about the twentieth-century awakening of political consciousness in the British Caribbean colony.

Book Producing Power

Download or read book Producing Power written by Kevin Yelvington and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1995-06-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a small, locally owned Trinidadian factory that produces household goods, 80 percent of the line workers are women, almost all black or East Indian. The supervisors are all men, either white or East Indian. Kevin Yelvington worked for a year in this factory to study how ethnicity and gender are integral elements of the class structure, a social and economic structure that permeates all relations between men and women in the factory. These primary divisions determine the way the production process is ordered and labor divided. Unlike women in other industries in "underdeveloped" parts of the world who are recruited by foreign firms, Caribbean women have always contributed to the local economy. Within this historical context, Yelvington outlines the development of the state, and addresses exploitation and domination in the labor process. Yelvington also documents the sexually charged interactions between workers and managers and explores how both use flirting and innuendo to their advantage. Weddings and other social events outside the factory provide insightful details about how the creation of social identities carries over to all aspects of the local culture.
