Book excerpt: Bien qu'en France la santé orale des jeunes s'est améliorée, des inégalités de santé persistent et les besoins en soins sont importants notamment pour les populations vulnérables. Dans un contexte où l'accent n'a pas été suffisamment mis sur la prévention et la promotion de la santé orale, se pose la question de la contribution des hygiénistes dentaires dont le rôle en matière de prévention a été démontré dans de nombreux pays. Cependant, cette profession n'existe pas en France. Les objectifs de ce travail étaient de construire et tester une séquence d'information destinée aux étudiants présentant la profession d'hygiéniste dentaire et de réaliser une étude pilote visant à évaluer l'opinion et les connaissances des étudiants et à mesurer l'impact de cette séance. Cette phase pilote a permis de vérifier le contenu de la séance d'information et du questionnaire. Les résultats montrent que la majorité des étudiants connaît très mal la profession d'hygiéniste et est globalement défavorable vis-à-vis de cette profession. Ces résultats sont en accord avec la position des chirurgiens-dentistes français qui ne sont pas encore prêts à voir apparaître la profession d'hygiéniste dentaire. La séquence d'information n'a entraîné qu'une évolution modérée de leur opinion en faveur de cette profession. Un besoin d'information persiste quant à cette profession. Une séance d'information et un questionnaire modifiés permettraient de recueillir le point de vue des chirurgiens-dentistes et des étudiants sur l'ensemble du territoire français. La récente entrée en vigueur de la directive européenne permet de penser qu'il faut s'attendre à terme à voir surgir la question de la création de la profession d'hygiéniste dentaire.
