Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madeleine de l’Aubespine (1546–1596), the toast of courtly and literary circles in sixteenth-century Paris, penned beautiful love poems to famous women of her day. The well-connected daughter and wife of prominent French secretaries of state, l’Aubespine was celebrated by her male peers for her erotic lyricism and scathingly original voice. Rather than adopt the conventional self-effacement that defined female poets of the time, l’Aubespine’s speakers are sexual, dominant, and defiant; and her subjects are women who are able to manipulate, rebuke, and even humiliate men. Unavailable in English until now and only recently identified from scattered and sometimes misattributed sources, l’Aubespine’s poems and literary works are presented here in Anna Klosowska’s vibrant translation. This collection, which features one of the first French lesbian sonnets as well as reproductions of l’Aubespine’s poetic translations of Ovid and Ariosto, will be heralded by students and scholars in literature, history, and women’s studies as an important addition to the Renaissance canon.

Book Ballet Music from the Mannheim Court Part 5

Download or read book Ballet Music from the Mannheim Court Part 5 written by Christian Cannabich and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume completes the collection Ballet Music from the Mannheim Court with two ballets by Christian Cannabich: Les Fêtes du sérail (probably based on Jean-Georges Noverre’s Les Jalousies, ou Les Fêtes du sérail, as described in his Lettres sur la danse, 1760) and Angélique et Médor, ou Roland furieux (based on the characters in Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando furioso). The former ballet features several movements with “Turkish” instruments and the exotic setting of a harem. The latter features detailed annotations in the music regarding the story, which differs in some respects from the scenario for this ballet by Étienne Lauchery that was published for an earlier performance in Kassel.

Book The Routledge Research Companion to Anglo Italian Renaissance Literature and Culture

Download or read book The Routledge Research Companion to Anglo Italian Renaissance Literature and Culture written by Michele Marrapodi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this Companion volume is to provide scholars and advanced graduate students with a comprehensive and authoritative state-of-the-art review of current research work on Anglo-Italian Renaissance studies. Written by a team of international scholars and experts in the field, the chapters are grouped into two large areas of influence and intertextuality, corresponding to the dual way in which early modern England looked upon the Italian world from the English perspective – Part 1: "Italian literature and culture" and Part 2: "Appropriations and ideologies". In the first part, prominent Italian authors, artists, and thinkers are examined as a direct source of inspiration, imitation, and divergence. The variegated English response to the cultural, ideological, and political implications of pervasive Italian intertextuality, in interrelated aspects of artistic and generic production, is dealt with in the second part. Constructed on the basis of a largely interdisciplinary approach, the volume offers an in-depth and wide-ranging treatment of the multifaceted ways in which Italy’s material world and its iconologies are represented, appropriated, and exploited in the literary and cultural domain of early modern England. For this reason, contributors were asked to write essays that not only reflect current thinking but also point to directions for future research and scholarship, while a purposefully conceived bibliography of primary and secondary sources and a detailed index round off the volume.

Book Translating Ancient Greek Drama in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Translating Ancient Greek Drama in Early Modern Europe written by Malika Bastin-Hammou and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume brings together contributions on 15th and 16th century translation throughout Europe (in particular Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and England). Whilst studies of the reception of ancient Greek drama in this period have generally focused on one national tradition, this book widens the geographical and linguistic scope so as to approach it as a European phenomenon. Latin translations are particularly emblematic of this broader scope: translators from all over Europe latinised Greek drama and, as they did so, developed networks of translators and practices of translation that could transcend national borders. The chapters collected here demonstrate that translation theory and practice did not develop in national isolation, but were part of a larger European phenomenon, nourished by common references to Biblical and Greco-Roman antiquities, and honed by common religious and scholarly controversies. In addition to situating these texts in the wider context of the reception of Greek drama in the early modern period, this volume opens avenues for theoretical debate about translation practices and discourses on translation, and on how they map on to twenty-first-century terminology.
