Book Confessions of a Rogue Teacher

Download or read book Confessions of a Rogue Teacher written by George L. Colon and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a physical altercation with a troubled student, school officials remove jaded veteran English teacher Manny Quesada from his high school classroom. They assign him administrative duties in the “Rubber Room” of lore and legend in the superintendent’s office where lost souls known as ‘rogue teachers’ await judgment. Rather than wait passively to be exonerated for what he considers justifiable defense, Manny undertakes a quest to clear himself. He uncovers startling evidence that educational officials are falsifying statistics - and that the scandal reaches the highest levels of city politics. As the new realities of urban education erode his ideals, Manny wallow in self-pity. He spirals downward on alcohol, drugs, and his favorite student, Maggie, a bright, green-eyed beauty interested—unlike the others—in learning, whose infatuation temps him in his weakened state. But then blackmail and a murder investigation cast serious doubt on his return to the classroom, and Manny must decide if his ministry to problem students can survive his personal turmoil. Reminiscent of such notable works as Blackboard Jungle, Up the Down Stair Case, and To Sir with Love, Confessions of a Rogue Teacher paints a sobering portrait of the American classroom and artfully captures the realities of public education today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators are natural pioneers; they have always been the transmitters and transformers of history. Courageous educators have changed the very course of our culture by taking risks and challenging prevailing systems. Somewhere along the way, however, that sense of audacity has diminished. Overuse of accountability agents ranging from uniformity, bell curves, statistics and threats of litigation threaten to compress our educational systems into a linear track devoid of color, creativity and diversity. Diverse personalities, fresh ideas and new strategies are required to sidestep the narrow, one-size-fits-all path of today's school systems. As the world becomes more diverse, teachers need to lead the way in embracing their own distinct approaches. The Rogue Educator concept is best explained by taking a look at specific teacher qualities and possible paradigm shifts for each one. The Rogue Educator book is a collection of easy-to-read, familiar, and memorable characters that will resonate with all instructional leaders and professionals. Teachers and other educators will recognize a bit of themselves in the profiles and will learn new ways to capitalize on their own personalities by making the classroom—and the school--a more positive and supportive environment for all.

Download or read book The War Against Hope written by Rod Paige and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2009-02-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former US Secretary of Education addresses the crisis in public schooling and the role teachers’ unions have played in its decline. Something is terribly wrong with America’s public-school system. For decades, we have seen test scores slide or stagnate—today, fewer than twenty percent of our nation’s twelfth graders are proficient in math, and our students rank near the bottom in science and math among the industrialized nations of the world—and achievement gaps persist or widen. So who’s responsible for the ongoing failure of our education system? In The War Against Hope, former Secretary of Education Rod Paige pulls no punches in his critical analysis of America’s crisis in the classroom. Without question, the greatest impediment to meaningful school reform is the enormous, self-aggrandizing power wielded by the teachers’ unions. In this vital, well-documented book, Paige takes an unflinching look at the power-hungry union leaders who have consistently placed their ambitions ahead of the needs of the teachers and the students whom they claim to serve. He also traces the history of the National Education Association (NEA) from its humble beginnings as an advocate of education excellence to its early radicalization by left-wing ideology. The War Against Hope is a disturbing account of the corruption, greed, and skewed values that have assaulted our schools, betrayed our teachers, and forsaken our children for far too long.

Book From Martyrs to Murderers

Download or read book From Martyrs to Murderers written by Robert L. Dahlgren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In From Martyrs to Murderers, the author explores the connections between the dark, unflattering representations of public schools, teachers and teaching in popular Hollywood films and the conservative attacks on public education that have culminated in a generation of neo-liberal standards reform measures. The author’s analysis is based on a survey of 60 movies that feature significant interactions between public school teachers and their students. This study employed a textual analysis method involving viewing the films alongside original script material, which reveals that the narratives involving public schools during the late 20th century and early 21st century are distinct from those involving other types of schools or eras. Rather than the romantic figures of earlier portraits, such as Eve Arden’s beloved Our Miss Brooks in the 1940s and 1950s radio and television serial, these teachers are consistently portrayed as negative archetypes, thus providing a rationale for the school reform agenda of the 1980s. The sheer repetition of these damaging images in Hollywood products of the period made the American public more susceptible to the deceptive arguments outlined in A Nation at Risk, the seminal 1983 report that provided the blueprint for the standards reform movement that has dominated education policy for the past generation. This work thus develops upon the critical perspectives of educational historians and social studies educators who have probed this turning point in the history of American schooling. It also offers an alternative means of viewing the reality of life in the nation’s public institutions.

Download or read book Monkey Two written by Paul Adams and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1925, the State of Tennessee enacted a law that prohibited the teaching of evolution in public schools, specifically, that man came from apes. The law was immediately challenged by the ACLU and pitted two famous lawyers Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan, a religious Fundamentalist and one-time presidential candidate, in a bruising contest. The case became famous, known as the Monkey Trial. In this fictional trial, a high school teacher was fired for introducing religion into his biology class in the form of criticism of Darwinism. The trial involves expert witnesses from a variety of fields who defend and attack Darwinism, but not merely from a biology point-of-view. There are deep religion/atheism, legal, political, philosophical and cultural issues that are at stake and reflect today's bifurcated society. The Supreme Court cases in the past fifty years on the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment are demonstrated as in disarray especially in school-religion cases. The famous bioatheist, Richard Dawkins, is called out for his trenchant criticism of Christians and distortion of Darwinism to achieve his ends. The lawyers are cut from vastly different cloth - an ex-Vietnam soldier and an anti-war conscientious objector. But the scientific and religious experts do most of the talking from the witness stand. The present book describes the preparation for and First Week of Trial.
