Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is full of good-hearted heathens, those who love people and those who want to do good in the world. They're not against Godâ€"they just have little use for church. Church is boring and hypocritical.  Plus, who wants to sit through a sermon every week? But while organized religion doesn't appeal to them, these heathens long for a connection to something bigger than themselves: meaning, community, mission. Pastor Jerry Herships leads a church-ish community full of good-hearted heathens. They may not love church, but they love sitting around a bar talking about what really matters and doing some good for their city's poorest residents. Herships takes that experience and absolves other former churchgoers of their guilt. No, you don't have to go to church to love and serve God. Yes, God still loves you and wants to help you love the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries in Spain, a large number of parodic works were produced that featured depictions of humourous, satirical, and comical saints. The Laughter of the Saints examines this rich carnivalesque tradition of parodied holy men and women and traces their influence to the anti-heroes and picaresque roots of early modern novels such as Don Quixote. The first full-length treatment of the ways in which Spanish writers imitated religious depictions of saints' lives for comic purposes, Ryan D. Giles' erudite study explores the inversion of oaths, invocations, pious legends, and liturgical devotions. Analyzing a variety of texts from Libro de buen amor, to later works such as the Celestina, Carajicomedia, Lozana andaluza, and Lazarillo de Tormes, Giles not only sheds light on Golden Age Spanish literature, but also on the origins of the comic novel. A well-argued and convincing work, The Laughter of the Saints reveals the uproarious results of the collision of official and unofficial methods of storytelling.

Book excerpt: A nurse was gang-raped and burnt to hide the clues, this news shook me badly. The newspapers are filled with the news of abusing innocent girls. Many of them are burnt or killed after this heinous crime. Some of them live a hateful life, neither can they live nor can they die. The offenders, rapists, murderers wander free without any fear. The victims wait for justice but the system denies. To save our daughters, sisters, mothers and all the fair sex from this hateful crime I took up this work to find out the real causes of rape like crime and tried to explore the possible solutions in my poetry. There are many reasons of this crime. I have highlighted social, political, economical, psychological and educational reasons and their possible solution through my poems in simple language. I've tried my level best to infuse, imbibe and emulate my readers the proper reasons. I've made best effort to arise respect towards the fair sex and sympathy towards the victims. I studied many incidents and research papers to find out the causes and solutions of this worldwide problem and presented them in the form of short poems. My poems not only expose the reasons of this abhorrent crime but also suggest the proper solutions of the problem. It motivates the youth, girls, boys, parents, our society, the politicians, beaurocrates to respect the women as a human being and protect them and their human rights. This book presents each and every aspect beautifully, with proper emotions and expressions. I hope that after reading this book the reader will respect each and every woman and they will be always ready to protect them in adversity. It will create a society which will be rape free. Each and every person will be aware about his rights and duty towards others. The rapists and offenders will be neglected and they will be protested without any kind of partiality.

Book Saints of Resistance

  • Author : Christina H. Lee
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2021
  • ISBN : 0190916141
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Saints of Resistance written by Christina H. Lee and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighty percent of Filipinos (about 80 million people) identify with the Catholic faith. Visitors to the Philippines might find it surprising that images of Catholic saints, the Child Christ, and the Virgin Mary can be seen in all kinds of public and private spaces throughout this Asian country, such as in restaurants, shopping malls, pasted to walls, painted on buses, and of course, in-home altars. Many of these saints bear Spanish names and their legends almost always date to the period of Spanish colonialism. Saints of Resistance: Devotions in the Philippines under Early Spanish Rule explores why, in spite of their fraught history with Spanish colonialism (which ended in 1898), Filipinos have staunchly held on to the faith in their saints. This is the first scholarly study to focus on the dynamic life of saints and their devotees in the Spanish Philippines, from the sixteenth through the early part of the eighteenth century. The book offers an in-depth analysis of the origins and development of the beliefs and rituals surrounding some of the most popular saints in the Philippines, namely, Santo Niño de Cebu, Our Lady of Caysasay, Our Lady of La Naval, and Our Lady of Antipolo. Christina Lee recovers the voices of colonized Philippine subjects as well as those of Spaniards who, through the veneration of miraculous saints, projected and relieved their grievances, anxieties, and histories of communal suffering. Based on critical readings of primary sources, the book traces how individuals and their communities often refashioned iconographic devotions to the Holy Child and to the Virgin Mary by introducing non-Catholic elements derived from pre-Hispanic, animistic, and Chinese traditions. Ultimately, the book reveals how Philippine natives, Chinese migrants, and Spaniards reshaped the imported devotions as expressions of dissidence, resistance, and survival.

Book excerpt: When one reads through the New Testament, it's evident that the practice of planting churches began two thousand years ago. Today's culture, community, and connections differ greatly from the churches Peter and Paul helped build. Even in the past 20 years, those factors have dramatically changed the ministry of church planting. In Ready, Set, Plant Bener Agtarap and Curtis Brown provide tools for planting churches—looking at the spiritual, social, and economic aspects of the process. Creating new church bodies requires redefining priorities and practices. Yet one thing that never changes is that the mission must be God's mission. Ready, Set, Plant raises questions about church planting that every new church community must address: Why? Who? How? What? Where? When? Agtarap and Brown provide a broad range of answers to each question. By examining these questions and various answers, church planters will be equipped to fulfill their divine call to make disciples and transform the world.
