Download or read book Roger North Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Mrs. John Bradshaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roger North, Vol. 3 It was between the hours Of five and Six, a time which with many families is emphatically the children's hour. Near the fire sat the mother. She held a three-year-old girl, blue-eyed and golden-haired, in her arms; while a sturdy boy, a year or SO older, pressed his eager face against her shoulder. Both the children were looking at the gaudy pictures in a volume which the mother held; both were listening with the deepest interest to the adventures Of puss-in-boots, as though they had not heard them twenty times before. Beyond the Open folding-doors could be seen another group. Seated on the floor was a girl Of barely twelve, and by her Side a toddling baby brother. With one hand she built towers Of bricks, with the other held him back, until screaming with joyous laughter he escaped her grasp, and in a moment his mischief-loving hands had levelled her structure to the ground. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roger North, Vol. 1 Presently there was a firm tread on the gravel path, and a man came up to the girl's side, and stood, with an amused smile, looking down on her and the dog. The clanging and crashing of the bells were at their loudest; the ringers were giving out their final peal, which, with the girl's own talk and laughter, prevented her from hearing the approaching footsteps. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the creation of an overseas empire change politics in England itself? After 1660, English governments aimed to convert scattered overseas dominions into a coordinated territorial power base. Stuart monarchs encouraged schemes for expansion in America, Africa, and Asia, tightened control over existing territories, and endorsed systems of slave labor to boost colonial prosperity. But English power was precarious, and colonial designs were subject to regular defeats and failed experimentation. Recovering from recent Civil Wars at home, England itself was shaken by unrest and upheaval through the later seventeenth century. Colonial policies emerged from a kingdom riven with inner tensions, which it exported to enclaves overseas. Gabriel Glickman reinstates the colonies within the domestic history of Restoration England. He shows how the pursuit of empire raised moral and ideological controversies that divided political opinion and unsettled many received ideas of English national identity. Overseas ambitions disrupted bonds in Europe and cast new questions about English relations with Scotland and Ireland. Vigorous debates were provoked by contact with non-Christian peoples and by changes brought to cultural tastes and consumer habits at home. England was becoming an imperial nation before it had acquired a secure territorial empire. The pressures of colonization exerted a decisive influence over the wars, revolutions, and party conflicts that destabilized the later Stuart kingdom.

Book The Honourable Roger North 1651 1734

Download or read book The Honourable Roger North 1651 1734 written by Jamie Croy Kassler and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger North (1651-1734) is known today as a biographer and writer on music, architecture and estate management. Yet his writings, including thousands of pages still in manuscript, also contain critical reflections about intellectual and social changes taking place in England. Eschewing the 'Whig' stereotypes of North, Jamie C. Kassler provides the first interpretation of his philosophy. She reveals that North, a common lawyer by profession, combined the morality of the sceptic, Montaigne, with the jurisprudence of the common lawyers, Coke, Selden and Hale. This unusual combination grounded North's critical reflections on the dogmatism of natural-law doctrine, both in its medieval intellectualist version and in its voluntarist reformulation that began with Grotius and was developed by Hobbes, Pufendorf and Locke.

Book excerpt: This collection of original essays brings international and multidisciplinary perspectives to the problem of how to understand and practice editorial mediation: How does editing alter what it seeks to represent? How does it condition the relationship between texts and readers? The different concerns shared by editors of a variety of genres, literary and otherwise, emerge here as constructive new approaches to the theory and practice of editing are explored. The essays make a concerted attempt to assess the implications of postmodern thought on one of the oldest and most fundamental cultural activities, editing The section on theory covers such important subjects as editorial responsibility, the death of the author, and the nature of the authorial voice. The practice section covers actual editing situations in various literary areas and in musicology, recorded music, and the preservation of oral literature. The multidisciplinary volume will find its readers among students of textual criticism, literature, music, and folklore as well as any readers of postmodern criticism.
