Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roentgen Rays in Medicine and Surgery: As an Aid in Diagnosis and as a Therapeutic Agent; Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Students The following pages are rather a report of progress than a final presentation of this growing subject. I planned to include as complete a list as possible of the publications on the medical and surgical uses of the Roentgen rays, but when it was found that the list would add nearly one hundred pages, it was omitted; had I foreseen this, I should have referred in the text to many other important papers. My own contribution is the result of two opportunities. The one, by permission of Professor Charles R. Cross, was in the Rogers Laboratory of Physics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. With the most cordial and efficient assistance of Messrs. Charles L. Norton and Ralph R. Lawrence, of this department, I obtained my first equipment at a time when many difficulties had to be overcome. From the late Professor Emeritus S. W. Holman, whose rare character and ability made itself felt by all who had the good fortune to be his friends, I have sought and received both advice and assistance during the course of my studies. The other opportunity has been at the Boston City Hospital. To my colleagues on its staff I am indebted for the interest they have shown by referring to me from their services many patients requiring X-ray examination or treatment. In the reproduction of the X-ray photographs there has been no retouching. I wish it were possible for me to express the gratitude I feel toward Dr. William Rollins for his unfailing aid in my efforts to obtain apparatus suitable for these examinations, and particularly for the new and better forms of vacuum tubes that he has devised. It is my privilege to express my obligation to my wife, for her devoted assistance in the preparation of this book. Book excerpt: This open access book gives a complete and comprehensive introduction to the fields of medical imaging systems, as designed for a broad range of applications. The authors of the book first explain the foundations of system theory and image processing, before highlighting several modalities in a dedicated chapter. The initial focus is on modalities that are closely related to traditional camera systems such as endoscopy and microscopy. This is followed by more complex image formation processes: magnetic resonance imaging, X-ray projection imaging, computed tomography, X-ray phase-contrast imaging, nuclear imaging, ultrasound, and optical coherence tomography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Century of X-Rays and Radioactivity in Medicine: With Emphasis on Photographic Records of the Early Years celebrates three great discoveries-x-rays (1895), radioactivity (1896), and radium (1898)-and recalls the pioneering achievements that founded the new science of radiology and changed the face of medicine forever. Over 700 historical illustrations with full and informative captions are supported by short introductory essays to illuminate the fascinating radiological past in an easy-to-read style. The focus of this book is on the historically more interesting early years of discovery, invention, diagnosis, therapy, dosimetry, risk, and protection. Interspersed with a variety of radiological anecdotes, the photographic record is complemented by archival accounts of the pioneer scientists and physicians and their early patients. In the chapters on diagnostic techniques, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine, the author contrasts old methods with newer technologies. He also includes two fascinating chapters on museum and industrial applications of radiography. Book excerpt: The story of medical imaging and how physics played a crucial role in its development has fascinating roots. "From Discovery to Cure: The Early Days of Physics in Radiology" unveils a period of groundbreaking discoveries that revolutionized medicine. Imagine a time before X-rays, when internal injuries remained a mystery. In 1895, Wilhelm Roentgen's accidental discovery of X-rays ushered in a new era. Physicists, captivated by this invisible radiation, quickly recognized its potential in medicine. These early pioneers faced challenges: - Understanding the Unknown: The nature of X-rays and their interaction with the body were initially unclear. - Safety Concerns: The long-term effects of radiation exposure were yet to be understood. - Technological Limitations: Early X-ray machines were cumbersome and produced images with limited detail. Despite these hurdles, physicists persevered: - Developing Techniques: They devised methods to control radiation dosage and improve image quality. - Safety Measures: Early radiation protection practices were established to safeguard patients and healthcare workers. - Expanding Applications: Physicists explored using X-rays for diagnosing broken bones, lung illnesses, and even tumors. The early days of physics in radiology laid the groundwork for future advancements. These discoveries paved the way for: - Modern Imaging Techniques: From CT scans to MRIs, physics continues to be a driving force in medical imaging innovation. - Improved Cancer Treatment: X-rays became a cornerstone of radiotherapy, enabling targeted treatment of tumors. - A New Era of Medical Diagnosis: Physicists' contributions transformed medical practice by allowing doctors to see inside the human body without invasive surgery. The story of physics in radiology is one of continuous discovery and innovation. From those early days, the field has grown exponentially, shaping the way we diagnose and treat diseases, ultimately improving human health.
