Book The Dog Who Took Me Up a Mountain

Download or read book The Dog Who Took Me Up a Mountain written by Rick Crandall and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The uplifting story of two unlikely mountaineers: a man in late middle age and a fearless pint-sized pup who, together, scale Colorado's highest peaks. By the time life had finished hitting Rick Crandall from all sides, he was at the lowest point of his life, both personally and professionally. Depressed to find himself facing a mid-late-life age crisis and watching his finances crumble as the tech industry bubble burst, he hopes his future isn't headed downhill. It was at this critical juncture in their new marriage that his wife Pamela made an astute and life-changing suggestion: "Let's get a dog." So begins the story of Emme, a 200-pound Saint Bernard trapped in the body of 5-pound Australian terrier puppy. Soon, Emme and Rick hit the hiking trails around Aspen, Colorado. While she is groomed to be a show dog, it's soon obvious that her heart is in the hills and with Rick, who decides to add more challenging hikes to the mix. Before long, they are scaling Colorado's "fourteeners," peaks with altitudes of over 14,000 feet. On one magical day, Emme climbs to the top of four "fourteeners," a quarter of the sixteen such peaks she will complete during her life without once being carried on a trail or on the rocks on the way to a summit. In mountaineering Rick realizes he has found—in his late sixties—his life's new passion. This is where Emme has led him—out of the abyss and to the top of the mountain. She was never really walking behind: she was nudging him along until he found his stride. Even after Rick understood the glory of climbing, it was Emme still doing the leading, until Rick learned how to lead himself.

Book Postcolonial Animalities

Download or read book Postcolonial Animalities written by Suvadip Sinha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-02 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcolonial Animalities, co-edited by Suvadip Sinha and Amit R. Baishya, brings together ten essays to consider the interfaces between "human" and "animal" and the concrete presence of animals in postcolonial cultural production. This edited collection critiques monohumanist conceptions of the "human" and considers the co-constitutiveness of imaginaries of the human with grammars of animality. One of the central contributions of this volume is to decolonize existing conceptualizations of the human-animal relationship, and to consider the material representation of animals within the realm of colonial and postcolonial cultural production from the perspective of ethical alterity and alternative narratives of anticolonial and postcolonial politics. The volume also explores entanglements of race and species in colonial and neocolonial frameworks without transforming such inquiries into a zero-sum game that privileges one category over another. The essays in the volume, focusing on multiple geographical locations ranging from South Asia, Southeast Asia, post-Ottoman Turkey, the Caribbean, Australia, South Africa and Palestine/Israel, historicizes and understands multispecies, interspecies and transspecies encounters, affiliations and connections in and through their localized dimensions, and studies human-animal encounters in their varied and complex affective relationalities. Through such inquiries, the volume considers how modes of representing animals, including located forms of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism, help us think-with and be-with different animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Pichot, focusing on the use of therapy dogs, starts with a discussion of the basics of AAA/T and solution-focused therapy, as well as what every practitioner should know about dogs before partnering with them. Successfully combining all of this into an effective treatment program is considered next. Pichot draws upon her own experience developing an AAA/T program in the substance abuse counseling program at a county public health agency to illustrate the effective implementation of such a program and the struggles and lessons learned in doing so. Using AAA/T with special populations, cultural considerations, and the impact a therapy dog can have on the handler. New in this edition are client scenarios that demonstrate the therapist’s thought process when making clinical decisions about when and how to use a therapy dog. Sample forms and treatment plans are also provided that professionals can use to modify or structure in their work with clients. The concepts and information provided in this valuable guide will be helpful for any therapist regardless of whether he or she is in private practice or working in an agency setting.

Book The Bunkhouse Boys of Fort Bison

Download or read book The Bunkhouse Boys of Fort Bison written by U.H. Berner and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2006-03-12 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the totally fictitious tale of several teenagers who were. bound by their mutual interest in horses and achievement at school. It is the tale of their lives from February 1979 to November 1979. They live in the small city of Catvile, population 9 500, in the Oklahoma Panhandle, which the reader will find on the road atlas as Boise City, population 1 500. Catville had experienced a growth boom after WW 2, which brought in the Hi-Tec Hawthorne Corporation with Research and Production facilities. The expansion of the UofO system resulted in the founding of the 7ligh Plains Liberal Arts College A new 300 bed Regional Hospital, finally, was the cause of a massive influx of a medium and high-level workforce, who congregated from all over the US, mainly from both, the East and the West Coast as well as the southeast region of Texas. Many of these people brought children with them, who were used to English riding, perhaps bad even their own horses. This factor contributed to the decision to organize a riding stable that could cater to the needs of these children and teenagers, eventually even an approved Pony Club. All this took place in a land that was traditionally referred to as the heartland of Western riding and rodeo, in short of Western Culture. By nature of their background, the protagonists of the tale are considered accelerated students with high academic achievement. They are liberal, yet disciplined The tale takes them through the months of 1979, as occurrences on the way have a maturing effect. Their Pony Club training makes them conversant in dealing with people and animals as they are taught to handle adverse situations competently. An early sign of future leadership is observed and peers and superiors encourage such trend. Part II takes four of the boys to a cattle ranch south of Fort Bison Military Training Area (on the road map: Rita Blanca National Grasslands) to team up with twins of the same age, who are cousins of one of the protagonists. Here they get involved with the daily work of a cattle ranch and where they participate. English and Western riding find a symbiosis. At one of their outings they encounter a severely injured soldier on survival training. They successfully instigate rescue operations, prepared for such action by their previous Pony Club training. At the same time, Red Cross and FEMA select girls of their group for a pilot program where they undergo a six-week intensive training as certified First Aid Providers. In Part III the training is put to the test after a horrible avalanche of tornados hits the west part of Catville and outlying ranches. One of the girls is dispatched to a remote ranch, to which all power and communication had been interrupted, to check on the status of a woman who is presumed pregnant and two weeks before parturition. She finds the womans labors in progress. The nine months of this story show the maturing effect on the teenagers, how they grow, but also how they stay youngsters with spirit and full of joie de vivre. Shown is a world of teenagers that still is wholesome, yet, full of demands, of tribulations and earnest striving for accomplishment. Remarkable are numerous dialogues where the teenagers, all high achieving students, convert their observation into well thought of and formulated questions. Especially the Powwows in the summer evenings on the bunkhouse porch foster lively discussions. An old Cherokee farmhand is faced with inquisitive youngsters and able to respond. He turns out to be a retired High School teacher and former Captain in the National Guard. A befriended young Lieutenant from Fort Bison opens the understanding of the function of a modern Army and those who represent it. The tale culminates in the commitment of a lifetime friendship of two boys and girls. The Prologue and the Epilogue, playing 12 years later, disclose that one is married to her teenage friend, the other lost her friend, the leading prot
